so you would leave apple to go android to a phone that also likely has the FP scanner on the back?

maybe it's more? and this is just the last thing for this user?

Maybe the user is annoyed with Apple for the following:
1: Lack of design change over the last 3 years
2: lack of new practical featureset
3: lack of NFC support
4: lack of headphone jack
5: lack of AMOLED

or dozens of other reasons? (anyone else want to chime in? i'm sure there are people who can list more than 5)

and one of the reasons they still stayed on iPhone is the front facing fingerprint sensor.

so if Apple removes that last piece, maybe the user doesn't see a reason to buy another iphone.

but that's making assumptions. which you did too :p

I'm beginning to feel that this is the 7s. Apple may take a similar approach as to the materials on the Apple Watch. The 7s model will have smaller bezels, aluminum back, rear touch ID and similar display tech as the current model. The specs will bump up as they do every year. The other iPhone released will be the Edition, X, etc. It will have an OLED screen with either a glass or ceramic back, with the same specs as the 7s. You will end up paying for higher-grade materials, just like on the SS Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition.

What is the point of inductive charging? Not that that's what it is, clearly.

Convenience mostly.

have a charger next to my bed for my phone. when I go to bed, I just put my phone down on the surface. no fumbling for cables, trying to find the whole and stick it in just right. no need to remember that's it's plugged in in the morning when i leave and pull on the cable. just pick up and go.

its not some really tentpole feature. but it's handy and neat. Looking forward to more advanced style. would love more leeway on distance to the charging base. just a convenience feature that people can choose to use if they want

It's obviously a fingerprint sensor, not a conductive charging location or anything else. And it obviously will make it into the final version. Awful.
Yes. Because three different prototypes having it means it's confirmed. Never mind that they have used 10+ prototypes on iPhone designs before launch.

If this design proves to be the final choice (which I really hope it isn't) it would only add further weight to the opinion that Apple abandoned its, "It just works" philosophy a while ago now.

Last year they made it more difficult for users with the removal of the Universal Jack (not to mention the associated drop in sound quality).

This year, yet again, they are more concerned with form over function to the extent that in order to deliver on their desire for a full-screen phone, they will not wait until the technology is ready to have the fingerprint sensor under the screen and instead inconvenience customers further by putting the sensor on the rear of the phone.

The only thing that keeps me with iPhone is the regular updates to iOS and the added security features that each one brings.

Google may have taken a small step in the right direction with Pixel in this area, but even then they only guarantee updates for two years from new, which is pathetic.

Crossing my fingers that these pictures are wrong. Worse case scenario though is that I keep my current iPhones for another year until Apple can figure out how to place Touch ID on the front of the phone again.

I wonder, sometimes, how Apple could be so stupid as to think a rear-body fingerprint scanner is a good idea.

Then I remember this is the same company that designed the original iMac mouse.

How come everyone does'nt mind it on the back of Android phones but here its horrible. At least its not next to camera, like on the Galaxy 8

I don't want to see it on the back but if they did then why not build it into the Apple logo which is in a better position higher up.

People forget that there's rumoured to be two different models of iPhone coming out. This could be the 7s, NOT the feature-packed, completely redesigned 8.

Also, I highly doubt the fingerprint sensor will be placed so low. Using the Apple logo as the finger print sensor is the first thing I thought of so I don't think that the thousands working at Apple haven't thought of that rather than placing it so stupidly low.

It would be really cool if they light up the Apple logo on the back of the phone only when it was in use.

Ugh. But i have to say... releasing that would have to take "courage".

Releasing what? This is a render created by an Instagram user. Other than posting something frivolous in nature as "Courage." It would behoove you to read the title or the actual Article before commenting. Otherwise, the remapping of the button wouldn't work in your favor is what you trying to say out of translation.

Pass code, face recognition, pick it up?
As an app developer, I leave the phone flat next to my computer during development, and dozens of times an hour I need to unlock the phone to test a code update. Picking up the phone, entering a six digit passcode, or worse: moving your face to a position in front of the camera would be _way_ more of a hassle than the quick fingerprint unlock I'm used to now.

I'm hoping that all the developers at Apple who may be testing this out now will see the same problem!

It would be more cool if they used it as a notification light that changes different colours depending on the notification. Given Apples dislike for having flashy, blinking lights on their products it's highly unlikely though.

Because on the back of most Android phones it is put in a logical location (where the Apple logo is). Apple putting it dead center will be difficult for a majority of people as they will have to crumple their finger or move their hand entirely to use it. I personally don't care if it's front or back. I use both an iPhone and an Android phone and I'm comfortable with both, but the Android I use (Nexus 5X) doesn't put the scanner in an idiotic location (see iPhone 8 render or Galaxy S8).

touch id on the rear..under Apple logo..just looks terrible..
IMO if they move it to the back they should incorporate the scanner into the logo. That would be kinda cool and unquestionably unique.

Do people really think Apple is going to do a new design for the 7S (or whatever they call it) that moves the home button/Touch ID to the rear of the device and then and iPhone 8 which has the home button/Touch ID back to the front imbedded in the display? That makes no sense. I'm highly skeptical Apple is going to announce two brand new iPhone designs this fall.

well they can't do that.the Apple logo is too far up and they can't move it lower,it will look stupid.

I was thinking with the smaller variant of the iPhone, forgot about plus devices.

This is an instance of Apple going for form over function. Making it not look stupid but harder to use.

Apple needs to fire whoever is in charge of the iPhone design if this is how it actually looks.
