I highly doubt Apple will opt for such design, having a touch ID in the back and in the mid-center, not likely.

If it is placed in the back in a way where my fingers can easily & naturally reach and find the reader then no problem.

As an app developer, I leave the phone flat next to my computer during development, and dozens of times an hour I need to unlock the phone to test a code update. Picking up the phone, entering a six digit passcode, or worse: moving your face to a position in front of the camera would be _way_ more of a hassle than the quick fingerprint unlock I'm used to now.

I'm hoping that all the developers at Apple who may be testing this out now will see the same problem!

You could keep it unlocked during app development

But why this awkward position of touchid? At least my fingers are nowhere near this spot, either above or under it, but never in the middle. Very uncomfortable position in my opinion.

If the next iPhone is going to be wireless charging it will need to have a hole on its back, because aluminum isn't good when it comes to wireless charging, I guess it's going to be for that .

something doesn't look right...

I can't imagine that hole being for touch ID. There is no fastener mounting location and I can't see adhesive and the back of the battery being the only thing preventing you pressing your finger into it whether the touch ID is used as a button or not anymore.

The back looks weird too, and it looks different from the last leaked rendering (more chamfer less radius especially around the camera).

If it is true that there will be some sort of wireless charging, likely inductive, I can see that hole being the access to the inside of the phone. Considering inductive charging doesn't work through metal and they can't just stick a coil on the back it could be laminated in between the back and a thin sheet of glass not shown. Back to the iPhone 4 design and in line with the stainless steel band with front and back glass which I thought was previously rumored (I could be mistaken).

Also those antenna "lines" or little notches in this case look like BS, functionally that wouldn't work. Unless the whole chassis is the antenna this time in which case those little notches are pointless.

So now we're going even further back in design by copying the iPhone 5? And I see now that Touch ID will for sure be on the back.

A buddy of mine just showed off his new Galaxy S8 Plus at work and even brought the Gear VR and I got to say, I'm more than impressed.

If this is the best the collective minds at Apple can do, then we've got major problems.

It's the return of the headphone jack! Now larger to include all headphone 1/4" jacks! For the true musician and stereophile!

Touch ID in the back is not practical at all so to use it you have to lift up the phone each time you need it

How so? It looks nearly the same size as the charging point on the Apple Watch

The inductive charger puck is quite a bit larger. The entire back plate of the AW serves as the contact. Clearly Touch ID. :apple:

If you can't make your design work under glass and want to compete with the S8 you're Touch ID goes on the back. Can't have 4mm bezels with it on the front. ;)

These rumors of Touch ID on the back don't make sense not because it's "Un-Apple like to put Touch ID in the back" but because all the rumors up to this point have been talking about an "all glass design" My theory is that this is the 7S & the iPhon 8/Edition will be constrained but have Touch ID in the screen & have the all glass design. I might be wrong but I feel like some key piece of information is missing or hasn't leaked yet that would provide clarity in the rear Touch ID.

Has anyone considered the possibility that Apple simply can't keep up with their own high standard of innovative technology?

Think about it, - the new design / repeat S model / new design / S model... year cycle was rock solid, until last year. Why? We were expecting (and they were too) to have integrated Touch ID into the front glass. We are still expecting the same this year, but now it seems likely we are facing another iPhone-gap year where we wait out the best feature to come in an iPhone since Touch ID. I just wish it wasn't so obvious (moving Touch ID to the rear? Are you kidding?) that they're biding their time until they can get it to work.

Personally, given I'm still on a 6+, I'll be waiting until just before the new announcement to find the mostly-confirmed design schematics of the new iPhone, to order a 7+ in Jet Black with 256GB if these renders with Touch ID on the back are true.

its almost like they copy from android and what the most unimaginative fans would want: "if I could get a plus with a 5 body, I'd be down"

I mean, looks sweeter than 6/6s/7 design, but come on Apple

INNOVATE! with a design. Come up with a new design. Stop using old designs. Take a chance beyond courage.

I dunno how many ways to say it

Seems like "just a render" created by someone.

I am sorry to rain in the parade, this is the iPhone 8, as the previous part leaks all seem but consistent. Than there was the rumour that Apple was struggling to do away with the button. Alas I need a new phone, as I dropped my 6 plus a few times. I have been tempted to cross over to the new Samsung galaxy, but I am too tied into the Apple ecosystem. Hopefully there will more to iPhone 8 in terms of specs and features to make it worth the upgrade, besides I never look at the back of your phone, no matter how hideous it is.

My couple of pennies on this...

For those who were saying "Apple! Why u go backwards? Why you no innovate?" well, where do you expect them to go? There are only so many ways to design a phone body, just like there are only so many ways to design a car body. With vehicles you have a three-box design, occasionally a two-box. There is no other way to do it. With a phone you either have rounded edges or you have squared edges. Either bevel/chamfer them or don't. What is left? Flip phone? A circle?

Until we have phones with the fruit roll-up OLED screens we were teased with almost twenty years ago, we're stuck with two basic designs. The flat edges of the iPhone 4 and 5 have that beveled detail that draws the eye. They had a subtle beauty that was hard to beat. The rounded edges of the 6 and 7 just seem generic. They look like every other phone on the market, now that the Lumias are discontinued. When the i6 came along, I thought I was looking at a Galaxy. I still bought the 6S, but I wasn't happy about it. I encased the thing in an Otterbox so I don't have to look at it.

As far as the mystery hole goes... I HOPE its a fingerprint sensor. I will never use one, so if its on the back and out of the way thats perfect for me.

I'm still betting the "mysterious hole" is for wireless charging

Why would you need a hole for wireless charging tho when other phones don't need it? Just because we think it's going to be metal casing? We really don't know anything yet. I believe the phone will not have wireless charging...at least not this year. Gotta save for future features for the 'S' model.

People need to relax. There's still plenty of time before mass production. I'm sure Apple is doing everything it can to make the fingerprint sensor stay at the front under the display. I mean, if you had a chance to implement a solution that willl place you ahead of Samsung and others, surely you'd take it? These schematics are simply back ups. That's normal for designing a phone. There's probably 20 schematics been drawn out incase the technology isn't there. If the technology will need a few months delayed, sure the phone can be delayed but if it's a year delay, finger print sensor st the back it is!

Touch ID in the back is stupid. Apple, please don't be stupid as every other manufacturers. I'm a big Apple fan but I refuse to buy a rear Touch ID iPhone no matter whatever other cool things it'll have.

It would be more cool if they used it as a notification light that changes different colours depending on the notification. Given Apples dislike for having flashy, blinking lights on their products it's highly unlikely though.

hahaha...that made me laugh... doesn't iMessages with all that cartoony, flashy, animations count?
