People are missing a HUGE point here. I assume most users of this site are tech savvy. The reality is most iPhone users are not, they are normal people who just want a new iPhone that looks like an iPhone, walks like an iPhone, talks like an iPhone. New colors are OK to get their heads around but new fancy technology and a new design? then it is no longer an iPhone in their eyes.

Why do we have to put up with limited quantities, its not like Apple is surprised by the popularity. They know its going to be a hot seller, why not make enough.

You're kidding right? Have you ever been involved in building something where you rely on outside suppliers and manufacturers? Murphy's Law rules the day. And from the rumors about this phone it will be a very technically challenging phone. This usually means lots of things can go wrong. It doesn't need to be one big thing, it can-probably will- be lots of little things. That all add up.

I think the "iPhone" name is way to popular for them to change it, and would just lead to confusion. Plus that naming convention can't apply to every one of their devices/services (such as the iMac, Mac Pro, Macbook, iPod, iPad, iTunes, iBooks, iMovie, iCloud).
People call the Apple Watch the iwatch. This thought about the rebrand while actually a great thought will never get the masses to agree.
i don't think Apple cares if the masses agree. They always try to lead their customers thinking not the other way around. They got rid of the FloppyDisk, the DVD Drive, the headphone jack and now even all ports and left us with USB-C. I don't think they are afraid to get rid of the "i" at all. They always make bold steps when it comes to these things and they expect the masses to follow... which they eventually do. Plus, I believe "Apple Phone" still sounds similar enough to "iPhone" (in hearing not reading) that it wouldn't be too big of a stretch. Also visually replacing the "i" with a tiny Apple Logo like with the Watch and Pay, it would still look familiar enough to recognize the brand at first glance. They don't mind a little confusion. It was really confusing when they called their third iPad simply "iPad" again... they do things like that.

True but they never dropped the "i" from the "iPad". It was "the new iPad" or "iPad Air" or w/e silly wording they called it but "iPad" was always there. That's why I think "iPhone X" or "iPhone Pro" would be more likely. Also, there is already an apple logo on the back of an iPhone. So having the big apple logo, then :apple:Phone underneath would be weird unless they did away with the larger logo.

Except that this isn't Apple's first rodeo, and they're already saying that there won't be enough product?

I like the way people think money can perform miracles. Some people clearly have no clue what it takes to mass produce millions and millions and millions and MILLIONS of incredibly complex electronic devices, fill containers and ship them all to hundreds of countries all over the PLANET. That's fine, but these people should learn not to comment on things they know nothing about.

If I put enough money in this lamp, and rub it, will a genie come out? Why not??!!!1112345

"Edition" is such a stupid name for product in the way Apple use it. iPhone Edition, Apple Watch Edition, etc. Makes more sense if named iPhone Pro Edition, iPhone Anniversary Edition or Apple Watch Ceramic Edition. Just using product name and "Edition" just doesn't work.

Younger Boomers love BS stupid sounding words like that - the gen before them said even stupider things like "a touch of class." They won't go away until the last of the Boomers are finally drooling all over themselves in nursing homes, which unfortunately is still 10-20 years away.

Well the the Logo in front of the Phone Name would only be used when refered to the product, also on the Boxing itself. On the Phone they would stick to the big Logo as you said, but below they would only write Phone. You are right that they kept the i in iPad. I believe the iPad is not enough of a big product to make such a bold move. The iPhone however is their strongest product. They have to get rid of the 'i' eventually and the iPhone would be the product to drive that change. I admit that the iPad kind of is no iPad without the 'i' since they created that word. ApplePad sounds kind of stupid. But this doesn't apply to the word Phone. Since the iPhone is Apples biggest and strongest Product, it would make a lot of sense to change the i with apple because it represents the company the most. The 'i' thing is timely, but the name of their company is going to change.

The most likely part would seem to be the screen. Samsung themselves have had problems in the past such that they limited OLED screens (or their more advanced ones) to only certain models. Perhaps it's difficult even with multiple suppliers to meet Apple demands (both numeric and quality) for OLED screens for this iPhone. If I had to bet money, it would be that one part that they don't expect to have in "unlimited" supply come this summer/fall.

Money buys machinery, pays employees, pays shipping etc etc.

This isn't even news or a rumor. It's a regular occurrence. We all know that the newest iPhone will take months before it's available for people to walk up and buy.

Good point. I hadn't thought about that. Apple should spend one hundred trillion dollars making a massive long production line that runs around the equator, with conveyor belts leading into every Apple Store, retailer and warehouse.

;)

ETA: Better yet, hollow out the moon.

So you don't think that if they invested a few billion to increase production it would help? Priceless.

The concept looks pretty cool. Does it justify spending over a 1000$ for a phone? I don't think so. If it had a built in laser or B.S eradicator then perhaps lol

If the iPhone 8 is gonna have usable screen size of 5.15, how much does the current iPhone 7 plus have now?
For comparisons sake.

Building all the extra factories that would be required to meet the initial launch-day demand would be stupid.

After that initial surge, they'd have a bunch of unused factories sitting around, costing huge amounts of money for majority of the rest of the year. It's far better to find that 'sweet spot' that will let you meet as much of the demand as you practically can on launch day while still giving you a reasonable amount of manufacturing capacity throughout the year without wasting huge amounts of resources maintaining those now-silent factories, paying lease on the land etc.

The idea that a company like Apple would intentionally limit manufacturing below what they could reasonably achieve baffles me. Every day a prospective customer doesn't get an iPhone increases the chance they'll go off and purchase a device from some other manufacturer.

As usual, the reality is far more complex than all these arm-chair supply-chain generals could possibly imagine.

Excellent post.

Going to skip iPhone this year since I got iPhone 7 last year but really hoping they do an iPad mini Pro.
