well the other phone i was deciding on was the Nokia N95 which DOES support flash

btw ive never had problems running flash on my desktop or laptop ( windows xp) so i know its an apple issue and not specifically an iphone problem
N95 really? E90 maybe....

The advertising agency is there to make sure that companies do not make untrue claims about their product. In truth apple did. Just because other phones don't support flash is not a reason that apple should make misleading comments about their phone.

Yes it does, so does my Nokia E65

I'll just add that N95 is almost 2 years old. It didn't have Flash support when it was released, but it was added later on a firmware upgrade. These days all S60 phones have Flash support.

I really appluad BBC act and i think apple should think before they say their products are perfect. They can just say they are better than pcs (only when they are) but not perfect, if you ask me.

Who is everyone? You and I knew there was no flash but the general public doesn't since they don't all hang out here on the forums. This is about whether advertising is accurately portraying how the iphone works--and it doesn't.
The general public should stop being idiots. Also can I file a complaint about people complaining to much?

Don

The misleading aspect of the UK iPhone TV advertisements was the sheer speed of Internet access shown - not even my wifi network provides an experience that quick.

Adverts have to tell the truth. If we start letting companies and I mean any company, no matter how loved, get away with being inaccurate there will be no limit to how far companies will take it.
Apple stated that you could view the whole internet as a fact not as an opinion this was at best misleading.
But as companies are not supposed to lie or mislead in their adverts a person would not be an idiot to believe it.
I'd at this point like to say I love my iPhone and I actually prefer that it cannot use flash.
But anyone who watched that advert and then didn't do further research would believe it could.

Apple Shmapple !

I must admit, i am a huge apple fan, and user. But...
To describe Java and Flash as "every 3rd party...". I mean hello...! Those two technologies are so widely used, and revolutionised the web ! How can the refuse to support it.
Windows Mobile does those 2perfectly, as does al new Nokia's, or even older nokia's with software upgrade.
Java And Flash are the standard, not the exception, Apple ! Wake up, YOU are substandard.

"You never know which part of the internet you'll need ... which is why all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone"

Time for me to nit pick:
Internet: An interconnected network of computers
Web: A series of interlinked text files conforming to a protocol developed initially by Tim Burners-Lee for display in web browsers

The iPhone can reach all of the internet because it supports TCP/IP. The iPhone can display all of the web. The iPhone can not display proprietary extensions to the web.

Granted, the "Internet" has become a synonym for the web which may lead to confusion. But, Apple didn't say anything that wasn't true!

The ASA were pretty correct in their decision.

The iPhone is like a Mac - Better at the things that Apple allows you do on it, but then doesn't even do things that PCs can do (I mean that in a very broad sense including what software publishers allow you to do).

How about adding:
Bluetooth that actually behaves like on EVERY OTHER PHONE that has Bluetooth
Flash
Java
Something better than a poor 2MP camera
A flash for said camera
Ability to take video
Full quality image emailing
MMS
A camera on the front
Add any MP3 as a ringtone, that phones have been doing since at least 5 years ago
Copy & Paste
A file system to store...you know...files on there

The iPhone has plenty going for it, but the lack of Flash and Java is only the start of the Mac experience on a phone (if you think that's a good or bad thing)!

The N95 8GB has been brilliant for me, and i'd be missing ALL those things if I went with an iPhone. And I got the N95 8GB FREE with my contract! Until Apple gets their act together I doubt i'll be getting an iPhone.

Oh, and I get email pushed to my N95 via Gmail for FREE too.

I think Apple just needs to edit the wording of the ad and the advert is back up.

GPS does not require FLASH and neither do iPhone applications that use the internet to show weather and sports updates for example.

Everything they showed is possible with the iPhone so that's not lying to the public.

The iPhone safari experience is pretty good - thats a fact.

However, the iPhone blatently cant view the WHOLE internet / web whatever, as it doesnt support flash or Java, which some websites are solely based upon. This is also a fact.

Therefore if you look at it in black and white, like the ASA have to, Apple were wrong, and the advert was misleading. There is no argument here...

if you need flash that bad ( i couldn't careless). then use a real computer.

this is my major problem with having switched communities from a windows user to a mac user.

response to complaint about windows software: "this OS can't meet my needs either. *sympathy*"

response to complaint about apple software: "your expectations are wrong. apple OS's are perfect, so if you're not inline with their offering or features, then go cry about it somewhere else."

in response to the OP, java and flash are not "every third-party technology out there". if someone came complaining about silverlight not being supported I'd think they were suffering from meningitis. I can see, however, why apple decided to not include these technologies: security, stability, and their relative unimportance when it comes to web standards. JS and AJAX re supported, which is enough for me. I'd rather not login to some page and get that stupid "OH MY GOD! NO WAY!" or "YOU HAVE BEEN SELECTED TO WIN A NEW IPOD" ad.

Yep, misleading, well done ASA. I like the look and idea of the iPhone and I like Apple's products but as consumers we need bodies like the ASA to work and should support them when they use what little clout they have.

Totally agreed. I think it's great that they stop ads like this. Why should corporations be allowed to mislead consumers when consumers are held to the highest standards by the corporations? Everybody knows what happens when you lie on application forms (insurance, job application and what not) and get caught. THe same standard should apply to corporate entities.I say well done! It's easy enough for Apple to change the wording and then they can start runnnig the ads again.

This is what government and government agencies are for: protecting citizens. This kind of ad may be trivial, but a lot of ads are not, such as pharmaceutical ads.

Fair enough. Apple over-egged the iPhone's ability to browse the World Wide Web as you would on a normal computer and got smacked for making incorrect claims. Nothing wrong with that. It serves no one to make incorrect claims about a product since it only leads to disappointment by customers and legal fees.

How many standards should the iPhone support before apple can say you can browse the whole internet. I agree flash is a given, but what about windows media and realaudio/video or that Micro$oft thing "Silverlight"?
Someone is all ways going to be creating some new standard for the web. What make the iphone so good is Apple do actually upgrade their firmware to add new features. Buy a Nokia and it will have the same features it had OOB when you chuck it in the bin 12 months later.
