Wow! If the US had similar standards,

we'd have virtually commercial-free programming!

For me, I think advertising is Darwinian: if you are dumb enough to be misled, you are dumb enough to suffer the consequences.

Maybe we should submit a complaint for all the adverts, saying they are not showing the true speed of the iPhone. If the iPhone locates people using GPS that fast, I'm the queen of England.

If they mean the web and email, they should say the web and email. If they mean the whole internet, then where's my usenet access? Where's my IRC access? Where's my IM access? Where my FTP access? I could go on. The web and the internet aren't the same thing, and in both cases this ad was flat out misleading and/or dishonest.

Well those adverts rely on end users giving their impression if the product worked or not. For example 81% of women said that the shampoo made their hair soft. Then that is fine.

Actually, it's not. There's a well-known effect called the "placebo effect" which means that if you gave those women a bottle of water to use on their hair a good proportion of them would claim it made their hair softer. Then there's bias in the way the questions to the subjects is worded, the fact that the results are assessed subjectively (and by the testers rather than an independent assessor), there's no control product (an inert product identical in appearance to the one under test) being used by 50% of the testers, etc. etc. etc. The test methodology for any beauty product has holes in it you could drive a bus through, yet they make millions from people they deceive with their adverts.

For example, here are 5 examples of things that I use regularly on a computer that I couldn't do an iPhone or any other mobile device.

BBC iPlayer - I regularly watch shows online

Er, you do realise iPlayer works fine on the iPhone don't you?

Adverts have to tell the truth. If we start letting companies and I mean any company, no matter how loved, get away with being inaccurate there will be no limit to how far companies will take it.

Hahahahahaha. You do actually watch TV, yes? Then how can you possibly say that? We're letting them get away with it every day (see above).

Oh its nice that the n95 supports FLash, but what use is it for 80% of sites? It supports Flash lite. I think a lot of the whiners who want flash want a full version the Flash 9 one. Welll ever tried to run flash on a sub 1 gHz computer? It sucks. Flash lite also will display a lot of flash 9 content wrong, any robust flash site these days that has info on it also would not work as a lot of them are in FLEX, that will not work on lite. Not to mention you can build malicious apps with Flash 9 and cause the phone to crash. For me flash support has been not a big deal because the only flash for phone version kind already sucks.

What a bunch of twaddle to ban this add. Some silly PC user no doubt in a fuss over the coolest gadget on the planet. Nokia have been making phones for over a decade. Apple make one phone and it rocks the planet! Where is the innovation of Nokia. (and yes I own a Nokia)
"The innovation of Nokia"...? Um... Ericsson and Nokia are The Beatles and the Rolling Stones of mobile telephony. Anyone who came after (such as Apple, the Jonas Brothers of mobile telephony) owes them bigtime.

Nokia were instrumental in creating the first international mobile phone network (NMT) in 1981. They created the first handheld NMT phone in 1987. They were one of the key developers of the GSM standard -- the Finnish prime minister made the world's first ever GSM call in 1991. The world's first satellite call was made using a Nokia handset in 1994. They became the world leader in mobile phones in 1998. They sold their billionth cellphone in 2005.

There's a liiiiiiiittle more to the term 'innovation' than the end user experience. Yes, the iPhone is an innovative concept with an innovative interface, but without the likes of Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola, the iPhone would be little more than two cans and a string. All the core technology, all the standards it supports, was created by others.

Like I said, the general public should stop being idiots.

If I'm going to buy a $200/300 phone with a $2000+ contract I would do research. This reminds me of a thread where some newb went and bought a maxed blackbook thinking it had a gaming graphics card in it because it "cost so much money".

Like I said... People shouldn't be idiots

Don

OK if you are so into research, which web sites use Flash for their navigation without any alternative? Sure most sites use flash for the wow factor but an increasing number use it to navigate the site. Thus making those sites inaccessible via the iPhone.

Personally I don't care about not having flash (which I knew about when I got the phone) until I ran into some ecommerce and information sites that I wanted to use while mobile but could not becuase of their flash navigation.

"every third-party technology in the marketplace"

LMAO

That is really funny. I love this kind of talk. Just what I needed to get me started today.

What is the whole internet? How do you define it? If you cant define it how can you claim it can/can't view everything?

Safari on my Mac can't view flash or silverlight, does that mean i cant view the whole internet or does that mean my iPhone can view the whole internet because its the same as my desktop?

Exactly... So in that case - how can they claim that the iPhone can see the WHOLE internet?

Anyway - seriously - who cares?!!

I cant believe how many people are willing to defend the iPhone until the death... How much are Apple paying you guys?!!?!

Great.. go and use your PC you Windows little prat.. this is a mac forum and only limited for intelligent people.
This particular thread where people are defending a blatant lie in yet another misleading Apple ad and specifically posts like this one, are the reason I'm reluctant to admit I own a Mac. As at times it seems they are used by mentally deficient retards who worship Steve Jobs like some sort of deity.

Hey by the way.. Microsoft released a NEW amazing OS called Vista.. use it man, its so 'amazing'.
Hey by the way... Apple released an amazing new bit of software called Leopard which is about to receive its 5th batch of bug fixes as it's such a buggy piece of crap.
A 'Genius' at my local Apple store said he never uses a new Apple OS until about update 4 or 5. Now there's confidence in your product!

Yeah, there are plenty of sites where Flash is a requirement. I just came from www.rebirthmuseum.com where the navigation masthead is Flash-only, that's just one example from the last five minutes. And yesterday I wanted to show a South Park clip to a friend, so I went to southparkstudios.com where you can watch all the episodes for free - but only if you have Flash. It would have been the same deal with YouTube, but they made a special iPhone/iPod Touch application for that.

I think they should just replace the word 'internet' with 'web' and it wouldn't be so contentious. In my opinion the advertisements are misleading, but it could be solved with a simple word change.

I wish we had a commercial advertisement standards authority in the US. i think they would ban half of these crap ads we are forced to turn down everyday.

Atleast flash lite runs all the vids from different sites. Thats what matters to me. I do most of my surfing on my N800, which btw has full flash plugin in it's microb (firefox) browser and it only has the same processor as N95. So no need for >1gHz processor for full flash...

And yet we can have an ad talking about about liquid oxygen etc.

I think the ASA should check out it's scientific claims a bit more. Apple did overstep the line by saying ALL the internet.

Regardless what company is doing the false advertising, it is good to see something is being done about it.

Mhm, tell me about it... I have two Macs running Leopard and two Vista PCs, and it sure isn't the Vista machines that give me headaches. Apple's quality control has gone down the drain lately, while Microsoft has been forced to shape up. Windows has this inherent low self-esteem due to decades of incessant bashing, and now the criticism is finally starting to pay off. OSX on the other hand is so full of hubris that it's starting to fall apart.

This was the right ruling - Apple are promoting that you can go "everywhere on the Internet" and without support for Flash and Java, which, like it or not, are used on a substantial number of sites, and without the plugin you can't navigate the site.

I hate the over-use of Flash as much as the next guy, but it is incredibly useful in some ways - sites like YouTube have used it very effectively and the days are gone really when you had to think whether you had RealPlayer, Windows Media Player, whether you needed to open a port or whatever - which can only be a good thing for people who aren't up with technology and just want to watch a TV show on iPlayer, or something like that.

The challenge for Apple is to either support the dominant plug-ins OR develop and promote an open-source, multi-platform, non-commercial alternative which is compatible with competitors' devices as well as their own. Otherwise they're just being a bit hypocritical saying their phone's browser is based on "open standards."

My preferred option is for Apple to support Flash. Suck it up and pay the license fee. The depressing thing is that it's almost that they haven't (or won't) recognise that Flash is a dominant product in the same way as their iTunes software is in a different market.

In any case, Im sure its not an intentional mistake by apple, I cant see that they would do that. Its just someones unfortunate choice of wording in the advert, that someone has chosen to pick on.

The National Concert Hall in Ireland has a flash based booking service, the alternative is to ring them
