Well Tim Cook launched the Apple Watch, and AirPods. Even though both products were fulfilling ideas and a vision that Jobs had put in place years before, they are pretty important products.

I think the mini was discontinued due to sales and the OS did not fit that screen size. The OS needed to be configured to fit the mini and due to sales, they did not want to invest money in this size of iPhone.
It was discontinued because it made up less than 3% of all iPhone sales, two generations in a row. Even the plus models, which were almost incomprehensible purchases, made up about 10%. This is why you can’t take anything that you read on anonymous Internet message boards as an indication of the real world.

You're right. Apple probably did not consider this might happen, what with all their brilliant engineers and industrial designers. Thankfully you were ale to point this out to them! Have you emailed Tim?
Seriously what would apples design team do without these people on message boards who have never used or even held one and already know how it’s going to perform?

It’s reasonable to assume that it’s thermal performance threshold will be lower than that of the pros, and that’s perfectly fine.

This. A rational human having rational thoughts. Thank you.👍🏼
Except there are people who say things like that every single year as if there’s some magic gotcha to be unveiled once people start using the product. As if Apple has never released a product before.

To Tim’s credit he also moved Apple away from Intel and Qualcomm, and that should improve Apple;s ability to innovate going forward
People obviously have vastly different definitions of innovation. Some, like you, seem to only be looking for surface-level innovation.

To argue that Apple Silicon itself hasn’t been innovative but instead is a possible enabler of innovation “going forward” is a little wacky.

Anyway, it’s clear that a certain vocabulary has become just buzzword drama, and the words have become less precise in their meanings over time, to the point where they don’t really mean anything at all. So everyone is making unclear points with undecipherable logic. A true waste of time.

I think it's ironic that so many are criticizing Apple for releasing the Air which they consider a beta, not ready for prime time, with too many compromises and not worth considering in first generation but also criticizing them for NOT releasing a foldable phone by now which would inevitably have had all the same limitations. They criticize when their upgrades are iterative and minor, and criticize when they make big leaps. You have to start somewhere. I can't wait for my Air which comes Friday, and if the stars align I will be up at 5am pre-ordering the foldable someday and probably the all glass XX as well. I love when Apple pushes the envelope and gives us something new. Sometimes people don't know they want something till you show it to them...

I got the iPhone air because I like it... I usually get the pro models but this year I don't like them. it's really that simple. Every person has the right to like what ever iPhone they like. I'm fully aware of the compromises but that's my decision to make. I can't wait to get my hands on it and then I will see how it performs for me. How it performs for you is not my concern. We are all individuals and this year I was presented with a new option and I liked it and I went for it.

I'd say the Apple Watch is the best Apple product launched during the Cook tenure. AirPods are another one. The Apple Watch is hugely important for health reasons for many people. The AirPods completely changed the wireless headphone market. Wireless headphones were generally terrible and/or bulky before the AirPods. Apple Silicon is another important launch. That took Apple computers away from the floundering Intel world to ARM. The M1 MacBook Air, in particular, was a revolutionary computer -- powerful, thin, no fans, great screen, etc.

I’m just hoping that these technological advancements make it across the entire product line. I’d argue until the M4 we had to choose between utility or aesthetics. We’re now at a point where the engineering can make useful, beautiful products.

It’s back to the same ethos as the iPod Nano. That was nowhere near as useful as the regular model, yet it flew off the shelves because it was a beautiful product.

Here’s hoping that ‘Mac Week’ in November unveils a 5mm-thin iMac. Not because they should, but because they can. It would be gorgeous.

14 years since Steve left us, who can believe it has been so long? 14 years without a revolutionary product design, and now we get iPhone Air. Apple coming back to its roots and the haters returning to their hateroots, I love it.

"It only has 5 GPU cores instead of 6! And who would pay that much for 12GB RAM? Turd sandwich."

MORE PLEASE haters. You don't get it, and you never will. If it weren't for Steve, you'd still be running Flash videos on your Palm Pilots in ignorance.

THIS is Apple returning to its core as an INDUSTRIAL DESIGN company. THIS is the future - like it or not, haters. iPHONE AIR.

This is great. I feel like I am being prepped for war, the iPhone Air in my hand while the spartan dude from 300 is leading the charge.

The Air will be a great phone, just as great at the base and pro models for what they are.

Honestly, can't you see that this phone is all about the look? Everything else is blah, blah, blah.

Battery size? It is a smaller phone, of course is going to have a smaller battery.
One microphone? Fewer GPUs? USB2? Blah, Blah, Blah.
Did I mention that it is all about the look?
You like it, you buy it.
You don't, you won't.
If the release of a new phone can hurt your feelings so much, you need a thicker skin... or a better hobby.

Thank you for your contribution possible or wannabe Apple Employee 😝

If Apple was seeking to go for a modular phone like I believe Google was testing then it clearly failed with still having the rear camera plateau.

Seriously just have two MagSafe sections and have MagSafe II that had no-directional HS data transmission and you basically have a phone that is customizable to a users needs.

Want extra battery then get a pack, want a better camera same thing, want something else then just add it.

So the choice of words was the problem, saying like the Air is an current super computer
The real problem is that a super computer doesn’t make for a super user experience, and moreover, the former isn’t a prerequisite for the latter. So it isn’t very meaningful in every-day practical terms.

Super Computer, it’s what you now need to do basic stuff or maybe it’s what LiquidGlass UI/X needs 😝

RIP iPhone mini. 🪦

I'm gonna miss you. 😢
Not sure what you mean. I just set up a new one. 😃

I was looking forward to the Air, but it isn’t what I was hoping for. Stil too heavy (it was rumored to be just 145 grams), camera too thick (thicker than the 16e, as thick as the regular 17) and wobbles a lot on the table, the glossy edges are counter too my design taste, plus minor annoyances like the lowered DI, USB 2, and last but not least requiring iOS 26. The screen, A19 Pro, and CS 2 is nice, but that’s it.

It’s good that Apple is trying new thing, and I understand it’s attractive to people coming from a heavy Pro Max who don’t mind the compromises, but that’s not me.

Title suggests Cook's mastery at selling the Air, but it turns out to be a defensive move thread. I should really look at this Air live 'cuz pictures not doing justice to my industrial design sensibility. The gadget is THIN, looks like it maybe bent easily, yes I know what reviewers are saying, it just looks anorexic at first look.

You are probably correct, because the clickbait UTubers will be unable to bend-ruin the Air so they will create extreme usages to make it heat up. Fortunately I do not waste time or bandwidth on idiot clickbait UTubers.
Lol Max Tech is gonna have a field day with their infrared thermometer. Probably while making the phone run like 20 sequential benchmark tests.

My wife is thinking about upgrading from 15 plus to either the 16 plus or the Air and has asked for my advice. My advice is to go for the Air She doesnt use the wide angle lens so wouldn't miss it and doesn’t look on paper that smaller than the plus.
Better advice would be to recommend that your wife personally real world A-B compare the two iPhones, then pick one.
