Their wordings are backed up by the EU's testing findings, which even Apple doesn't want to have to do and has been forced on them by the EU...

The iPhone Air is Class A for Energy Efficiency, where last year’s Pros were Class B. Huge improvement.

Air matches or exceeds 16 Pro on all battery tests, but less than 16 Pro Max. However, the gap is very close for average use to the Pro Max (~18-22 hours real-world for all).

The Air has a Class A battery cycle life (1000 cycles) vs 800-900 cycles on 16 Pro and Pro Max. Better long term longevity.

Drop tests wise, the Air survived 180 falls from 1m (Class B) while the 16 Pro and Pro Max survived 90 (Class C). Double the survival rate vs 16 Pro models. Matches 17 Pro Max.

Scratch Resistance - Class A. Last year’s models - Class B.

Bend Tests - Outperforms 16 Pro in all tests and was fine over 3000 bend cycles.

1. The iPhone 17 Pro is an incredible phone and a powerhouse for people who want the very best cameras and very longest batteries.

2. The iPhone Air is an engineering marvel, with Pro performance, a great battery, a very good single camera and a beautiful design.

Both can be true at the same time.

There you go bringing facts to an opinion fight …. Here that means you lose.

Ähmmm. Did you have a stroke? 😉

How can the have the audacity to call it air, with a camera bump that makes it thicker than the normal iPhone?
And we already had a real iPhone Air with the Version 6 in 2014.

Of course they can’t invent the wheel new in every year but Jesus!! They are out of ideas and messing up all the OS with that stupid glass design.

Have you seen the new Huawei Pad? Thats Innovation!

14 years since Steve left us, who can believe it has been so long? 14 years without a revolutionary product design, and now we get iPhone Air. Apple coming back to its roots and the haters returning to their hateroots, I love it.

"It only has 5 GPU cores instead of 6! And who would pay that much for 12GB RAM? Turd sandwich."

MORE PLEASE haters. You don't get it, and you never will. If it weren't for Steve, you'd still be running Flash videos on your Palm Pilots in ignorance.

THIS is Apple returning to its core as an INDUSTRIAL DESIGN company. THIS is the future - like it or not, haters. iPHONE AIR.

Agree 100%

About time we tuned down the bloatware and got back to elegant design. First Apple product since X that I actually am looking toward to as opposed to just buying as a needed replacement.

I think the mini was discontinued due to sales and the OS did not fit that screen size. The OS needed to be configured to fit the mini and due to sales, they did not want to invest money in this size of iPhone.
The iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini have the same resolution as the iPhone X, XS, and 11 Pro: 375x812@3x, so they won't have been discontinued because of that. Apps are written to intelligently fit the available screen real estate thanks to size classes (I'm an app developer), so there's very little effort involved. They will have been discontinued for lack of sales.

The iPhone Air could be one Tim Cooks best products, but personally for me its the 2018 iPad Pro, M1 Macbook Air and maybe the Apple Watch Ultra.
Those are great products, but I’m rather partial to Apple Polishing Cloth. I’ve never had one fail.
Plus I like that they didn’t release a new model that makes the original look dated.

MacBook Air launched as an ultra-portable laptop with a lot of compromise, now it's the mainstream MacBook.

iPad Air launched and replaced the regular iPad, became the mainstream tablet.

I'm not sure if iPhone Air will be the future mainstream iPhone, but that's possible.
I think it’s very possible. Believe it or not they left big margin of improvement with battery life. As far as I know they did not use silicon carbon battery yet, but the technology is already there. And this phone already outperforming 16Pro on CPU and GPU intensive tasks (geekbench) is insane. Slim first gen macbooks of the past had nowhere near this relative performance. Only a matter of time till they close the gap some more with cameras as well, or more minor things like speaker performance, charging speed and displayport support.

Nope. minis used the X/XS/11 pro size assets so nothing needed to change for the form factor

You know... One thing I greatly appreciate about MR is the oftentimes very helpful and thoughtful suggestions and ideas folks contribute... And then there are the trolls and the hype machines... If the OP is truly excited about the Air.. more power to him/her. Personally, I just see it as a thinner iPhone... I know he/she was talking about the phone and not the Mac but when Apple Silicon came out... I felt THAT was a leap forward.

I was never expecting the iPhone Air to be released this fall. Also, did not expect so much negative opinions. I was able to change my order a couple of times last night, and still get launch date shipping. I was also hesitant on purchasing this iPhone. I went back and forth from ordering the Pro Max and the Air. I knew why I did not want the Pro Max, but the Air is an unknown. Apple tends to lead us to new products, because the end goal is a future unannounced product. I don't think they did a good job of announcing this product. They should have not announced the MagSafe battery. A quiet launch would have been much better. The Air, if you haven't noticed, all the iPhone body is battery and screen. The other parts are all located in the camera bump. This is why there are limitations. It could only have 1 camera, and 1 speaker. My concerns is the battery life and heating. I can't wait to see the reviews that will drop on Wednesday and Thursday next week. These reviewers will hopefully tell us how the battery and heating performs.
Very well summarized and agree with you 100%.

There are so many "keyboard reviewers" that have never touched the new Air and will spout off anything they see or hear on social media.

Don't worry about their nonsensical comments - not worth it.

It’s all fun and games until a butterfly keyboard comes back.
I don’t disagree with your argument OP, but Steve Jobs lived in a different time when Apple could attract the very best talent. Today is not that day. Execution is much more important than ideas and I fear the former is becoming more and more unattainable as Apple continues to spread itself thin.

People who point out that the Air isn't the perfect device you make it out to me are not haters. They are rational thinkers.

The Air isn't for me, but I'm very glad it exits. Slab iPhones have been too heavy and thick for too long.

I think the Air 1.0 is a very flawed device, but I do think it has a ton of potential in future editions.

I believe in due time it will replace the vanilla iPhone entirely.

I hate the iPhone Air because I want to love it but the single camera, single speaker, and USB2 transfer speed is keeping me in the Pro camp. If the battery is already 16 Pro level, I’d take 15 Pro battery life in the Air in exchange for an ultra wide lens and a second speaker (assuming whatever space those components take up somehow impacts battery size). And price it starting at $1,009 to cover the additional parts and USB3 transfer speed and I’d be all over the Air and stand shoulder to shoulder with all the Air defenders against the unwashed haters pre-ordering 17’s and 17 Pro’s. I’m looking forward to how the Air evolves the next few years and could definitely see an Air in my future with just a few tweaks to the current offering.

I'd live with the single speaker and transfer speeds, if it just had an ultra wide lens.

The iPhone Air is likely the 12” retina MacBook of iPhones.

Looks hot, gets hot, then the battery dies.

I had a 12” retina MB, loved it, but it was largely useless in the scheme of things. I’d probably like the Air myself but I never want to go back to the days of midday charging. Too spoilt by Pro Max battery life that, for my usage, leaves me comfortably with 30 or 40% left at the end of the day, even with the old ass battery in my 13PM.
I loved my 12” mb. Used it for years. If they ever re-introduce it, I’ll buy it day 1. I even used Lightroom cc on it, and it worked fine.

Remember, not all of us are Pro users.

For those that prefer the basic 17 and Air - they are not your pro types.

I don't mind spending $1099 on my Air if it gives me a slimmer profile and lighter weight as I am a casual user with very light uses.

I get that. I don’t even consider myself a Pro. But are you saying only Pro users want stereo speakers? Of the three dealbreakers for me (ultra wide, stereo speakers, and USB3 transfer speed), I’d say only the transfer speed is a decidedly Pro feature. The other two have been staples of iPhone for years. Even the non-Pro 17 has stereo speakers and an ultra wide.

I would probably be ok with the Air missing Pro features, but not also missing base model features as well, considering its price and position in the product hierarchy. I think that weird set of compromises Apple made are partly fueling the strong reactions.

I think it’s the best looking iPhone since the X and as I said with a few even non-pro tweaks, I would be all over the Air as my next iPhone.

P.S. I’m also just a bit salty that I need to buy a Pro but I get stuck with aluminum… I’m willing to admit I have a wee bit of polished titanium envy. ;)

I am saying that I am a basic user and only need the 17 base or Air.
I don't need USB3 transfer speeds as I don't transfer stuff thru the USB port - only to charge.

Other Pro / PM users are saying stereo speakers, battery and 3 camera lenses are the only way.

I don't use any of the above items - my iPhone is tertiary device, after my home/work devices.

I'd rather pay the extra cost for the slim and diet weight of the Air.

A19 vs A19 Pro does not matter to me as I am a light casual user.

If I need more horsepower, I would select my Mac Studio Max or M4 iMac which I prefer over the tiny iPhone displays that are actually annoying to me.

I would disagree. As another poster pointed out Cook's biggest contribution, so far, was moving Apple away from Intel and developing their own chips inside. Gives Apple more autonomy over their own products and allows them to release Mac's on their own timetable. Hard to understate the importance of that.
