As I've already stated in this forum, another step towards the Air inevitably replacing the standard iPhone model in a few years.
I mean, to be honest, this might be the one to do it.
The iPhone 18 is rumored to be a phone with dual cameras on the back, improved battery, an A20 chip and 12 GB of RAM.
The second generation iPhone Air is also rumored to be a phone with dual cameras on the back, also with battery improvements, also with an A20 chip, also with 12 gigabytes of RAM, which it already has.
At that point, literally the only difference between the phones is aluminum versus titanium, and possibly single speaker versus dual.

They are basically the same phone.

Tim cook said himself price increases are coming to the 18 series and very very likely the air 2 as well, so expect more higher prices in spring 2027, not sure if the air 2 will be worth it now that the price increases are coming across the lineup. Might just go buy the 17 pro or base 17 once again, right before the 18 is announced lol

Honestly, if it did Macro photography, I’d be all about this. Still might consider it. Think I might miss macro on iP16P.

Does the lower bulk make it easier to juggle in the hand?
Not really. For comparison, it’s just 1.5 millimeters thinner than the iPhone 12, which at the same time had slightly lower weight than the Air (162 vs. 165 grams). You could say that it is an iPhone 12 pounded a bit flatter and wider, with the remaining volume redistributed to the thick camera plateau. (The battery is significantly higher capacity though.)

Air user, and lover, here.

The screen size is perfect.

iPhone 18 Pro with Air sized screen.

Phone/Camera solved.

The real story here is there is no Air 3 reported by Gurman for 2028. He's expecting base iPhone 19, iPhone 20, and Ultra 2, but no Air 3.

Air 2 coming out in Spring 2027 is a death sentence for the product. The A20 Pro launches this September and most people will buy the Pro/Max/Ultra. Nobody will wait 6 months to buy the same chip at $999. The Spring period is for mainstream customers looking for the base model, not the Air 2.
This is such an absurd take. The iPhone Air is going to replace the standard iPhone in due time.

Come back in 12 months and we'll decide.

There's no chance a titanium-based iPhone that sold so poorly will serve as the base model. The theory that Air will be the base is simply absurd. The bulk of Apple consumers want a low-cost device with good battery life. Is MacBook Neo popular because it's thin?

With Ternus in charge as an even more down-to-earth guy than Cook, pet projects are even less likely to be continued.

Hopefully with two cameras it sells better and Apple doesn't discontinue it. The iPhone Air is a great product and it's unfortunate that the market doesn't recognize that. If I needed a new iPhone I would definitely get the Air. I don't though, so I hope there is an Air-like phone available when I have to upgrade my iPhone 15 Pro.

That's great for people who didn't jump onto the Air the first time due to the lack of another camera lens. I'll see about upgrading, but so far my Air has been great.

Mate, you are dead wrong. And I will be proven right in due time.

I'm not going to engage with you anymore about this. You always post about how the Air is going to die. It's tiresome and ridiculous.

The Air is clearly going to replace the standard model. Apple is making the Air more appealing. They are making the case for the Air moving forward. They will lower the Air price to $900 with the 3.0 model and the standard model will be discontinued.

The Neo is a nonsensical argument. Apples and oranges. Cheers, mate. ✌️

If they’ve made it lighter, I might consider it. It’s too heavy. Currently, for the same weight and half the price and easier to manage one handed, I’d just get an 17e
To be precise, the 17e is 2.4% heavier and 40% cheaper than the Air.

You listed all the advantages of the 17e, but so others know all the disadvantages:
- 6% smaller screen (better for one-handed use, worse for screen real estate)
- standard non-Pro chip
- no ProMotion
- no AOD
- no Dynamic Island
- no Camera Control
- no Ceramic Shield back
- aluminum frame (better for thermals, worse for durability)
- 3.7% shorter battery life (video playback)
- 12MP front camera (vs 18MP) with no Center Stage or dual capture
- 25% slower MagSafe charging
- 512GB max (vs 1TB)
- 20% lower typical max screen brightness
- 60% lower outdoor max screen brightness
- OIS camera (vs sensor shift)
- no action mode camera
- Wifi 6 (vs 7)
- Bluetooth 5.3 (vs 6)
- first generation UWB chip
- no Thread support
- no dual frequency GPS

Just if any of this matters to people.
FYI the regular 17 has a much shorter disadvantages list.

Make the battery flush with the camera bumps and I'll consider. Great you made the rest of the phone thinner, now give me one just as thick as a Pro with more battery capacity and no awkward bump on back.

Sure, I'm dead wrong. LOL.

Poor market reception for Air means Apple will use it as their base. That makes sense to you.

Apple will replace the base iPhone with their least popular model. That makes sense to you.

Air has higher manufacturing complexity and material costs. That makes sense to you.

MacBook Neo is the new base MacBook if you haven't been paying attention. Ternus spearheaded that project.

Don't see myself needing to upgrade from the Air 1 in nine months. It's certainly not slow and it fully supports 27, so no complaints. Still it's nice to know they're keeping the line going.
