This is definitely Apple's goal, and a lot of people seem to be missing the point that this is literally all this is about. It's just about money.

I believe it’s actually both about control and money, but if Apple is going to lose control, then at least retain the billing portion.

And one more thing - you know what one of my local banks did in response to the rising rate of android scams? They changed their banking app to not work on android phones if it detected the presence of sideloaded apps.

I wonder if Apple might be able to get away with something similar. Say disable certain features like Apple Pay or iCloud if it detects the presence of sideloaded apps on an iOS device. All in the name of security.

So it may well be that while sideloading is technically possible, it becomes so onerous and inconvenient that nobody ends up using it?

I'm not Carnac the Magnificent, but I predict that nothing major will happen once Apple allows sideloading - except of course, games like Fortnite can run their own payment processor.
Just look at the companies complaining:
Spotify,
Meta,
Tencent,
Epic Games (Tencent),
ByteDance (Tencent),
Microsoft,
Google.

"nothing major", these are the biggest companies in the techworld.

Dear Macrumors comments, this is strange, not calling for pull out of EU anymore ?

I really don't understand what fundamental right you are talking about. The fundamental right for Apple to decide what software you can run on your device?

The fundamental right for me to let Apple decide what software is safe enough to run on my phone. Yes, I bought my iPhone for that right. Otherwise I would've bought an Android.

That's Android's SafetyNet. It's supposed to give the best of both worlds, allowing people essentially root but also denying them access if the developer decides they don't like that. Android is famous for banking scams and warez for a reason.

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out. I would like to see Apple be a better steward of the App Store, but I also don't like governments forcing corporations to do specific things like this. We'll see.

About time! Thanks EU.

Hope it comes to the UK… lol

And for those who are about to wail and moan: don’t use it. Simple!

Simplistic and shallow comment.

I don't care about the availability of side loading on its own.

What I DO CARE ABOUT is the continued over reach by governmental agencies. The free market should dictate what companies CHOOSE to create or allow on their products. We are the free market.

Apple is going to do everything possible to drag their feet in opening this up to the rest of the world and likely only do it under government mandate. It's hard for them to surrender that 30% cut of App Store fees/subscriptions....

Wonder if a VPN into the EU would be a viable workaround? Is Apple basing this 'restriction' based on phone's point of origin at purchase or when it's being used?

This will be fine, as long as the "install" process is always something the user has to agree to and cannot be exploited to automatically install something "on the side".

No, actually it's not simple. Once alternative App Stores with lower commission (or zero commission if you set up your own) become possible I very much expect the developers of some popular apps to make their apps only available that way, meaning it's no longer possible to get all the best apps in the Apple App Store.

People angry that Apple won’t make as much money. Poor Apple!

You are rejecting freedom just so a multi-trillion dollar company can make money.

This is a win for everyone unless you’re a hardcore fanboy or shareholder.

Android, Windows, and MacOS have “side loading” so it’s not as scary and dangerous as Apple would like you to believe. If you believe their lies then stay in your little walled garden safe space and Apple will hold your hand.
It’s not a win. Functionality by government regulation rarely is.

Or how about an add-on fee, in line-item, for phones sold in the EU. Like, the phone costs x + this EU service fee + the tariffs that the EU and member countries add onto the phone.
Also make it an extremely difficult process. If one wants sideloading, he has first to provide docs to prove his EU residence, then selfie with passport in one hand and paper with date in the other hand, then Apple rep books a call with you (maybe next week or the one after, Apple is busy you know) to confirm your identity on video. Then it's seven days data crunching and decision process, then you get your sideloading. If approved. Or documents are re-requested. )))

Butthurt to the moon

What happens is a first, tiny breach into Apple Cut system. The one Apple execs enjoy "while it lasts"

Payments processing is not related to sideloading.
But those games will theoretically be able to run modified clients with cheats.

No but the main reason that say Fortnite (Epic) wants sideloading is so they can avoid the Apple tax.
