More useless speculation. I am willing to bet the CDMA iPhone will be as real as the Powerbook G5. If they were looking to move to other carriers, they would've put the iPad, a device with no exclusivity, on both networks.

More likely they couldn't (yet) get the deal they wanted from Verizon. The other possibility is that it IS coming to Verizon, but they can't announce it yet because of something in Apple's agreement with ATT. We don't know what that agreement is, what it includes, or when it expires. Since we don't know what their agreement is, we don't know what devices are included in the agreement. I would like to hope that ATT was smart enough to foresee this type of device and make sure their agreement with Apple included wireless connectivity in any mobile device that Apple would make during the term of the agreement. But, maybe not. Time will tell.

There's very little reason to exclude Verizon (or Sprint, for that matter) unless it doesn't fit Apple's business model and financial goals for the device. If those goals aren't any closer to what Verizon demands from its side of the agreement than they were when Apple first started shopping the iPhone around (according to legend) then I could see no deal between Apple and Verizon.

Sprint users roam on Verizon for free. If you have Sprint your coverage is as good as Verizon's coverage for much cheaper.

Didn't know that. Nevertheless, as I said, no reason at all to exclude ANY carrier if the money makes sense.

I wonder what would happen to the Sprint/Verizon roaming agreement if Sprint started selling iPhones and Verizon couldn't. Given the generally higher data usage of iPhone users, maybe they'd be inclined to balk at letting that crowd in through the back door?

Clearing a few things up.

I work at Best Buy Mobile, so I am familiar with Sprint, Verizon, ATT and TMobile. I deal with customer service on a daily basis and the girl probably didn't know what she was talking about. If she knew about the iPhone, my Sprint or Verizon rep would have told my department about it already. Pretty sure that (not to say it ISN'T going to Sprint or Verizon) that the customer service lady can neither confirm or deny at this point. I mean, it's Apple. They will leak the information to us as they want.

Now about the technology. CDMA is what Sprint and Verizon use. It doesn't take a SIM card, but rather activates based off of programming the phone. GSM is what ATT and TMobile use. It is also used for unlocked phones (wouldn't it be nice?), and around the world. I will try to clear up the posts that I read.

Sprint users can roam on Verizon towers. It works the other way around. The reason for this is that they use the same technology. Verizon may buy time off of Sprints towers to gain coverage without building a tower themselves. This is how a lot of prepaid carriers work. They buy time off of the carriers towers (example: Boost Mobile buys time off of Sprints network, but not all of it. That is why you see Boost has less coverage than Sprint despite using the same towers.) This is also why, if you go to any part of the US close to the Mexican border, you might get charged international roaming fees. Your cell jumps over to the closest tower (in this case, in mexico) and thus you get charged. Without this, you wouldn't be able to travel to mexico and use your phone at all.

One guy posted that if Apple wanted to move to another carrier they wouldn't have made the iPad exclusive. They DIDN'T. It is unlocked and uses a SIM card. In the United States, you can only use it on TMobile and ATT. Around the world, you can use it ANYWHERE. We are so far behind.

Now, in terms of customer base, ATT is the largest with Verizon following close behind. The problem here is that the iPhone customer base makes up for 1/3 of ATT's customers. Without this they would be smaller than Verizon. Sprint has the cheapest all-inclusive plans, especially for smartphones (their prepackaged data plans work with, for example, Blackberries, that require a $30 data plan on other carriers and are NOT compatible with their cheaper all-inclusive data plans.)

So, onto the terms 4G and 3G. This doesn't really mean much for the near future. Yes, Sprint has a 4G network that is available some places and is launching pretty much everywhere soon. This is good, but doesn't mean we should rule out 3G at the moment. ATT is actually improving their data speeds without moving to 4G. In theory, this means they are spending less money rebuilding their network, and should have more money to give back to the consumer via price cuts, or better customer service (not saying I think this will happen....).

Another side note: Someone posted that changing to Sprint from ATT would force you into a higher rate plan because your mobile-to-mobile minutes would decrease. This is so ridiculously far from true. Sprint lets you call ANY CELL PHONE on ANY NETWORK for FREE. Only landline calls eat up your minutes. End of story.

ANYWAY, I am going to state my opinion now.

I would pretty much rule out the iPhone ever being unlocked, first of all. If they did, they would have to make it so expensive nobody would be able to buy it. They would see a HUGE drop in customers there. I think I would rule out TMobile simply because they are not popular enough in the US, and don't have enough coverage. I wouldn't completely rule them out, though. TMobile in Germany has the iPhone exclusively. Kinda makes you angry, right? I hope it goes to Sprint. They have spent a lot of time rebuilding their customer service. I can't say I notice a huge difference from the other carriers when I call. Occasionally you get a dumbass, but you do with all of the carriers. They have the best all-inclusive plans, cheapest prices, unlimited calls to cell phones, and some OKAY phones. (better than Verizon if you look at the basic phones instead of just smartphones). If it goes to Sprint, I will break my ATT contract in a heartbeat. I think that because of all the rumors, it is probably relatively true. That is usually the case. Now, if it weren't for the hype, I would say it is probably going to Verizon. They have a HUGE amount of 3G coverage. what good does a 3G or 4G network have if you aren't covered anyway. Verizon still charges a separate data plan for their smartphones. For example, the all inclusive data plan that has minutes, data, and text included will work on a regular phone, but not, for example, the DROID. Instead, you must get the talk/text bundle, then add your more expensive $30 data plan a la carte. This is why I think that the iPhone would love it there. It loves to have an exclusive plan only for itself that is more expensive. Also, they have more customers already. They also give the Primary line of family plans above a certain rate plan an upgrade every year, instead of every two years. What does this mean? more iPhones to be sold.

Anyway, we can speculate all that we want. We won't know for sure until it is actually revealed. Hopefully this helped some of you base your opinions off of some FACTS instead of what you see in commercials (not that you are expected to know all of that..). This post jumped around a bit, but I'm sorry it's late.

One minor correction to an otherwise excellent post: the iPad WILL be unlocked, but it WON'T work with T-Mobile in the US. The short explanation is that T-Mobile in the US (and WIND in Canada) use different radio frequencies on their 3G networks than any other carrier (the 1700 MHz band, to be specific), and the iPad 3G hardware doesn't support this band.

This is the same reason you can't get 3G service using an unlocked iPhone with T-Mobile in the US, and since there's no EDGE hardware for the iPad to fall back on, that means no T-Mobile at all. So for Americans, the unlocked nature of the iPad is really only useful when traveling internationally; you'll still be limited to AT&T's 3G network in the US. On the plus side, you won't be tied to a monthly contract!

I would go back to sprint in a heartbeat. Wish I would have liked the htc hero more because I would still be with them and saving about 40 bucks a month and not really have to worry about minutes because of the free mobile to mobile.

Apple was wasting time on the iPad that does not even allow multi-tasking (My Windows 95 computer did) and video chat.

So I doubt they have spent time after the iPhone. Hope to see a new one though!

it can possibly be true!

from what i've researched, sprint should be coming out with the iphone probably in the fall & t-mobile in the summer so im excited to finally have a phone i acutally want from sprint. lol

This is funny.. Every year there is someone who says I have a "buddy" that has "inside" info.. people were saying it 2 years ago about the 3G and then after that the 3GS guess what it NEVER happened..and ESPECIALLY a customer service reps know NOTHING.. believe me i have friends at ATT managers that literally know nothing until the iphone is announced .. so if the sole carrier doesn't find out info on the iphone till its announced , what makes you think a customer service rep at a completely different carrier , months away from release knows anything ? yeah everyone gets hopeful and says " its going to come to verizon" and now sprint.. come on be realistic

First of all you prove that Best Buy Mobile representatives do not know anything about phones as most people who shop there already know, the Ipad uses a micro sim and currently At&t is the only U.S. company to support such technology so the Ipad is currently locked to At&t data plans unless you use WIFI and Boost Mobile is a company owned by Sprint-Nextel so they are not being charged for accessing the iden network it and Nextel use and very few Boost phones are CDMA based and use Sprints towers and even then there is no charge.

Some corrections:

In terms of customer base, Verizon (89 million) is largest, with ATT (82 million) right behind.

Last I read, about 1/9th of ATT customers currently use an iPhone, not 1/3.

Cheers!

I talk to Steve myself

he decided he likes Boost mobile so we need a thread on that! how ever my Pizza guy says Virgin mobile is better! these threads never seem to die!

I have a feeling to they are going to Sprint. Sprint is the only carrier that's already launched Wimax (now dubbed 4G) which is basically high speed internet over the cellular network. Plus this tech has quicker build out since they can send the signal over twice as far as todays tech. Then Apple can call it the iPhone 4G and we can place video phone calls for some reason hehe.

You're wrong.

T-Mobile announced they were bringing a MicroSIM to US shores back on January 6th of this year.

Not only that but there's NO exclusivity with the iPad. If I want to take it to Europe, Japan, Africa, Australia, WHEREVER and buy a pre-paid data SIM, I can stick it in and BOOM, data.

I currently CANNOT do that with an iPhone I purchase in the US, I have to either jailbreak and unlock or pay AT&T's obscene roaming charges. This is because the iPhone has an exclusivity agreement in the US with AT&T. Locked phones are the symptom of this. The iPad is UNLOCKED and has ZERO contract. Even though there's some special deals with AT&T, it's not stuck there.

Why bother with a US Tmobile microsim with slow edge speeds on the ipad?
The $15 and $30 no contract AT&T price makes it a no brainer to potential consumers IMO.

You're right that there's nothing locking the US iPad to AT&T (unlike the iPhone), but you can NOT use it with T-Mobile in the US (or WIND in Canada). Check my post further up on this very page for more details.

I agree

While there's no way a front line customer service representative would know, I believe the iPhone would go to Sprint before it went to Verizon.

-Sprint's CDMA network is amazing, second only to Verizon. Also Sprint has an agreement with Verizon so if for some reason you don't get a Sprint signal and there's a Verizon tower you can use then you'll roam on Verizon for free.

-Sprint's customer service took a beating but they worked hard the past couple of years and the results are starting to show. I have a few Sprint phones at work I have to help people with and my experience with their care team has been great.

-Sprint is cheap, cheap, cheap. For $69.99 a month you get 450 minutes, nights that start at 7pm, unlimited calling to or from anyone in America with a cell phone regardless of what network they're on, unlimited data (or 5G whatever), unlimited text, NFL, Navigation, TV, Radio and a few other perks. If you do your homework you can easily get yourself that plan + 50 more minutes for $59.99 a month.

I agree sprint has the best talk and data plans and the best network. I amost left a couple of years ago because the service sucked. But it has improved 10 times. Theres no plan out there that even comes close to sprints. Theres a lot that say unlimited but you have to add data plans on all of them except sprint. for 69.99 unlimitrd text talk to ANY mobile any Network, unlimited data, everthing you need. And I got them down to 49.99 a month for all that because they knew I was thinking about leaving to get the iphone, or they thought, what i really intend on getting is an android

Customer Retention Dept.

OK I will say I too do not put much faith in Customer Service Reps and what they say, so take this with a grain of salt. Yesterday after my instinct finally croaked I called Sprint said I was not satisfied with the selection of phones they were offering and didn't see anything currently available that I wanted and that I was thinking of leaving. I was quickly sent to the customer retention dept, where I had to go through the entire schpeel all over again and that I was likely going to get an Iphone, Droid, or N-1. He told me that in the spring they will have the newest iPhone as well as 5 different android models. They then said the would wave the $50 insurance fee to replace my Instinct so that when the new phones become available I will be able to switch and get the full discount.

again it was just a CSR in the customer retention department. They probably would have told me they would send me a unicorn if I had asked. :D

Yes, they bs you enough so you don't leave. Same thing Verizon has been doing for years. Just wait, the iPhone is comming :D

If iPhone comes to Sprint I will take my 3G out into the parking lot, smash it on the ground and go buy something else. I don't want to be in any way associated with Sprint. They suck...suck....suck!

Steve

OK so I've never posted here and I've been lurk'n around here for almost year.
But, I guess I'll chime in here based on what I've been told.
So let just say....I friend of mine, told me;)

That his advertising company was just hired to do the pre work for Verizon's iPhone mid year role out.

Take it for what it's worth and have fun with that little tidbit of info.
