Yeah but knowing that all phones are spoken for at this point that is what you essentially asked for, you wanted your problem pushed onto someone else. Whether you see it that way or not. It is not like they have extra phones sitting around waiting for you.

But they are not-- they still have walk ins at the stores-- those are technically not spoken for.

I was never asking for someone to take Bob's phone and give it to me.

Besides, I *still* don't believe that there is not some phone out there that they dont have sitting around just in case.

If anyone was curious... Here's how my box came... Opened completely wrong for someone with any sense or time to do so...

Oh yeah, I know what everyone's thinking... These pictures sure would have been better with the iPhone 4's 5 megapixel camera... Sorry, my old 3G is going to have to do for now...

Wow.. just like my box-- except you got the shrinkwrap at least. I didn't even get that. ;)

And I am like you-- those boxes were REALLY yanked open at one of the ends-- I doubt that any machine would dig into the end of the box trying to seperate it and open it that way.

I think the one piece of tape was the original packing tape (my invoice or paper from Apple was above it so the tape was not put on after the fact). I think whoever went into the boxes ripped the ends out first since it could make the box look normal.

If FedEx showed up with a mangeled box and its contents missing, I would refuse the shipment and immediately call FedEx and Apple. It would cause a delay in shipping, but they can't deny my claim.

If you sign for it, you are accepting it. I am sure FedEx and/or Apple will help ya with this, but its going to be more difficult.

As the other poster said-- the boxes were not mangled. I had said even my friend who used t handle packages at FedEx ground said that as soon as she saw the pics she would have never believed a machine did it. When machines messed up packages she said they were MESSED up. She said too from her experience if a package was messed up, no one would want to touch it in case there was an accusation of theft- i.e. as soon as the broken package appeared it would be turned over immediately. Even she thought this looked to be a sticky finger theft.

So when the FedEx lady arrived nothing looked odd until I signed for it and then held it-- it felt-- very light and by that time I had already signed for the package.

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow so after reading this I'll have my camera ready when I answer the door. Wish I had some way to weigh it before opening.

You should know that companies like UPS, USPS, Fedex, etc do have ways of monitoring their employees inside processing centers. I used to be a clerk at USPS and there is not one single area of the entire building where you are out of sight of a camera, except in the restrooms of course, but even then they will know if you picked up an item and brought it in there. (There might even be hidden cameras in there but only used if more evidence is needed when they prosecute you.)

They take theft seriously as it reflects on the entire company so I have no doubt they are reviewing recordings inside and outside the building, (looking to see if anyone is going to their car for any reason other than leaving work), checking bank accounts (yes, they really do that) and such.

I know this doesn't get you your iphone any faster, but it's doubltful the bad guys will get away with it. As any postal inspector will tell you, there is always someone who thinks they are smart enough to pull off a theft. It's kind of sad too to see people being taken away under arrest because of something like stealing loose change out of an envelope. They gave up a career job and their future for not even enough money to go to McDonalds.

This exact thing happened to my wife a few years ago with Fedex delivering an iPod straight from Apple. She didn't know it was empty until the Fedex lady was gone. She thought it felt light, but the box didn't look mangled.

Anyway, she called Apple right away and they said that they would have Fedex investigate it and they would get back with us in the next 4 weeks or something stupid. Apple called back in a day or two and said that they were shipping a replacement, much to our surprise, so I imaging they found the culprit.

When fedex came to deliver her iPad, she asked to open it before she signed for it and the Fedex guy said NO! and she had to sign it and then open it. Screwed up.

So she's waiting for her iPhone 4 to show up tomorrow and just weighed her 3gs in the original box and wants to have the scale sitting there when fedex come.

Normal Weight?

I have a valet service, so I never come face-to-face with Fed Ex. Hmm.

Right now it's showing 1.0 lbs/.5 kg in transit. It's not coming from the areas mentioned here, but is that the normal weight?

.

Yeah, I'm not sure if they HAVE to let you open it before signing for it. Signing only means it was delivered. What's inside, or not, is none of their concern. Probably being really nice about it might grant you the opportunity, or at least maybe they will wait until you open it (after signing) and be a witness as to it's contents. Imagine what trouble they would be in if you opened it and then refused to sign. You could then claim it arrived opened and he would have no proof otherwise.

Most of the time they are always in a bit of a rush so don't expect them to hang around too long.

He said no?!

That's like the guy who set up my very $$$ table. I noticed a small smudge, and hesitated to sign. He rushed me, "No, no, that's rain. Sign here." I was just intimidated in the moment I guess, and signed. That smudge? Still there, PLUS the table doesn't align straight. But since I signed off, I'm screwed. Never again.

Your wife is right to have a scale there and/or demand that she be able to open it before signing.

Wow, I was kinda wishing I had just preordered instead of reserving after seeing the line by the Apple store earlier, but now I'm feeling a little better about my decision. I hope this situation gets resolved quickly for the both of you. It would be nice if someone from Apple would step up to the plate and help get one in your hands str8boostn, I'm sure they'll get reimbursed by FedEx in the near future so it's not like they'd be losing out. Duns, if I read your post right your reservation didn't get cancelled so you actually have one waiting at the store in your name? It's funny the way things play out sometimes. Anyways, best of luck for the both of you!

i would not stop calling apple until i was guarenteed a new phone. and i wouldnt stop calling fedex until i had every color of bumper i wanted lol.

seriously this sucks. best of luck in getting this issue resolved asap

Mine shows 2.0 lbs/.9 kg. o_O

Thanks St8kout.

I did a search, and it seems there's a similar thread for the iPad. In that, someone's iPad showed the same weight (in transit I assume) as my iPhone 4 does in transit. So I guess it's fine for now. I'll trust it until it arrives.

Thank you both for posting your experience. I am nervous now, but it's better to be cautious. Sorry about what happened to you both.

Oh wow, google 'empty iphone boxes being delivered' and there were some similar stories from 2009,2008,2007 because of the iphone popularity.

And your story is there too.

Hopefully yours is updated later.

My iPhone always showed the 1.00lb-- and well there was no iPhone as this thread knows.

I hope you get yours!

So FedEx lady came, I was excited.

When I got a hold of the package, I shook it. It felt VERY light.

So the lady said I should open it. There was one piece of tape holding it together and inside was just more cardboard.

No iPhone.

The box is all ripped on one side.

I am beyond HORKED. FedEx is "tracing" it.

Lovely

damn, if that happened to me i would go nuclear :)

I would've searched the FedEx lady's truck and purse! "You should open it" sounds like she already knew it was empty.

No it doesn't - it is standard for the delivery person to have you open a package that is damaged or otherwise not right. I own a business and get hundreds of packages a year and FedEx is by far the best at dealing with lost/stolen or damaged items. They will encourage you to open the item in front of them to act as a witness that the item was as you stated - if they do NOT - request they do. If they still refuse (unlikely) you would then take it to the local FedEx location (not the Kinko's) and have it opened there.

Wow, I feel sorry for you, but i'm pissed as well.

I left a pre-sign sheet taped to my front door, only to just find out FedEx left a sorry we missed you notice, WTF!!! LOL. I mean the sheet even says FedEx, just plain laziness on their part. I'm about to call and let them have it.

That would void any insurance you had on your behalf and FedEx will not leave a package with insurance valued at over $500 at your door regardless of what note you leave on the door. If you leave a note to have your neighbor sign for it - yes. Just a piece of paper on the door? No. I tried that on a service monitor I had purchased with a value at $3000 and was told by FedEx that anything with insurance and over $500 will not be released to your door without a physical signature on the scanner/reader. I am sorry but before you 'let someone have it' you should first go to FedEx.com and read-up on protocol. Why let some hourly worker 'have it' when it was really you that misunderstood the policy? So you wait a day or two - at least your phone was not left outside and someone walked by your house/apartment and walked with it!

I have your iphone, and will give it back for $1million dollars...

It is up to the driver. Even with a note signed, if your neighborhood sucks they will not leave it

OP. That is one bodacious bummer.

But why do you have to contact Police? Do not accept delivery, and let FedEx handle on their end. Kinda curious how this is handled with  and FedEx.

Because the item was NOT the property of FedEx but that of the OP. FedEx has no real vested interest in contacting the police anymore than the grocery store would call the police on your behalf if someone broke into your refrigerator and took the milk you bought from them last week. FedEx is simply a contracted employee of YOU as you purchased the item from Apple and PAID to have it delivered to you - therefore making them a contract employee of YOU. FedEx would get no place with the police - even if someone internally palmed it.

Best of luck - really. I hope you get both of your situations resolved.

My Fed Ex driver handed me the two phones yesterday, said goodbye and walked away. I called out asking if I had to sign and he said no. Good thing I was home. I would hate to have two expensive phones sitting on my doorstep.

Here it is--- the sides are ripped off as you can see on the top.

I asked the Fedex lady to take a pic with it.

Sorry had to block out my info

Nice nails :)
