about im

Another thing. IM is tied to a "separate" $15 data plan that includes their entertainment stuff (I'm talking about Cingular). Cingular's $20 data plan is all you can eat internet, and their $5 SMS plan is all you can eat sms. Personally, though iChat in the future will be cool (and I think Apple will sneak it in there somehow, or partner with google to make it part of the safari experience with google talk, or whatever), I'm glad there is no way that Cingular reps can try to upsell you on the data plan.

As an aside, there are two things I notice:

It says IF you have wifi, you can be talking and browse the internet and use email at the same time. Will this not technically work with EDGE right now? Or is it just to slow? or wha the hell?

There are elements of the book that suggest you might not have to buy a data plan. So perhaps what I said above means to say you have to have wifi (if you don't have edge).

Alot of people might be happy if you don't have to pay for edge and just pay for the talkie plan and use the wifi. I don't live in such an area, so I use my treo and pay $20 for all you can eat internet and $5 for sms.

Hopefully the same deal will be available. a la cart, and perhaps a reduced rate if you buy in quantity (get lots of minutes, and both all you can eat plans for less than all of them separately.)

I think its gonna be ok. AT&T I've been with for a long time. There plans make sense way before others (verizon) follow.

Two missing features that seems to cause some controversy are no iChat and no MMS. I think that SMS is meant to replace iChat, and email is meant to replace MMS. The first makes sense from both a monetary and permanent connection perspective, the second based on that Mail allows for much more manipulation over multimedia. MMS would just be a cheap knock-off.

Darn it fairynymph, every time i seek a cordial closure on this you set me off again. Your initial post said you'd used your phone on flights before "and nothing happened". Like what, the plane didn't crash? Now you refer to "...something unimportant" !?

I'm no engineer, so i can't know whether the threat to onboard navigation systems is real or a sham, any more than we can conclusively argue global warming, the Coriolis Effect, or what my brother really was doing that day i couldn't find him on our trip to Kuala Lumpur. I think my initial beef was the casual way you dismissed behavior that could have grave consequences. Break rules when the risks are small; don't break them when the risks to others could be considerable. It's a mindset that's putting us at odds, i guess.

That diet diew I tipped to you was caffeine free, or i'd be more worked up over this. ;)

LOL. Well first of all, you can't read my name, which means if I knew your physical address, I'd probably come beat you up. :D

Beyond that, yes, my nonuse of my powered up cell phone on an airplane is a minor matter, based on both anecdote and data. The FCC says as much.

It wasn't casually dismissing behaviour that could have grave consequences...because it doesn't have such consequences. To be fair, I had not read the FCC site at that point. But I do believe it's common sense, or they'd be more stringent about phones.

Am I to take it you never break the rules? I think many if not most us 'break rules when the risks are small'. You must live a very cautious life (other than consuming aspartame :p)!

If you think about it, breaking the rules when the risks are small can be both logical and wise, if the benefits gained by such behaviour are great enough.

No MMS for pictures or video? That sucks! I know you can email them, but if someone doesn't have email on their phone then they will have to do some extra steps before getting that picture/video

Ok..You don't work for Apple.you don't work for AT&T or the printing company and your SO doesn't either. What did you do.Steal it ?

For privacy reasons, cindynjgirl79 what rather not reveal how she came upon them. Please leave it at that.

My free phone can do that! Although the phone is still very appealing.

The phone is definitely still appealing.

I can buy a whistle for probably under a dollar. It will probably make a very good whistling sound. However, my stereo system (not a top-of-the-line one or anything) may not be able to make that sound all too well. (It sometimes has problems with high-pitched sounds.)

Does that mean I should forego the stereo system? :D

Camera Video Clip Function

Does anyone know if the iPhone supports a camcorder like function, as in shooting a video clip versus shooting a snapshot with the camera.

Knowing one of the Boeing engineers who was responsible for taking every piece of consumer electronics known to man or woman along with industrial high power transmitters, through the entire cabin of their aircrafts including setting the transmitters on the cockpit instruments, and having a fail or even glitch rate of any on board system be zero, well…...
Wouldn't a more valid test be to take combinations of 200-300 pieces of consumer electronics throughout the entire cabin turning them off and on and using them randomly, all at once, in sequence, etc. over a period of 2-12 hours while the pilots negotiate a variety of procedures such as take-off, landing, various failure modes and emergencies, etc?

I stoped by my Cingular/AT&T Store today, and the only thing the lady was allowed to tell me was the iPhone is coming out June 29th and the rest of it is a "big secret." (really, she quoted it, and said there's a ton of stuff on the internet) That and I can have the iPhone poster in the window when they don't need it anymore! :D

Since all I want is to buy the phone and leave my plan as it is (just calls), hopefully they will let me use the student discount!

Not like I'm going to get an iPhone... but no MMS? My dad's $20 phone has that. How could they leave that out?

I have to admit, that is one of the best analogies I have heard in a while :)

Cindy probably works for/knows someone who works for a printing company that printed the manuals. There is always extra copy that is produced or it could be that this was part of a bad run. That would explain why only part of the manual was provided.

Again, the whole manual was given to Arn. Originally, she had them held on a private photo sharing site. If she posted the whole manual here, it would run up the bandwidth and suspend her acnt. Because of this, Arn was asked to mirror the files on the MR server. Rather than doing the whole 34 pages or so, he only picked pages with interesting info.

The Home Button Is A Second Camera

I dont know if this has been posted yet, but look closely at the "home" button: IT'S A SECOND CAMERA! I think this will reveal the existence of some sort of iChat+video app. Now if only there was GPS...

Haha, I'm looking pretty closely and it doesn't look like a camera to me.

This has been posted and been shut down. I'm just mirroring what others have said.. First, do you really think Apple would put a camera where you'd be touching constantly and smudging it up? Also, they would have had to used 3g for some type of iChat video app as opposed to EDGE.

Two things, one, why do we assume that a rounded square is a camera, and second, I find it hard to believe that Apple, the company that prides its self on design, would put a camera at the bottom of the front of the phone. If there was a second camera, it would make a lot more sense to put it at the top of the front screen, like all the nokias that have 2 cameras.

oops, sorry - i was too excited to read through! Well, one can hope, right?

I think (while this mostly likely isnt true) if apple were to implement a second camera, they WOULD hide it so as not to have another blemish on an otherwise smooth surface. I wouldnt be surprised if apple hid it away and just 'shopped the lens out of the official images because it would retain the smooth/sleak styling. However, i realize this is highly unlikely. I will laugh if im correct though...
