Its pretty frustrating that this update basically exists to provide a new revenue stream for Apple (the WiFi store) yet does not address even a single one of the items published on web sites all over the place as far as features that people want.

Yes it does. Turn off EDGE when roaming. Speakerphone volume. There, that's two.

I don't recall seeing everyone say "wow I love my iPhone but I just wish there was a way I could buy songs off iTunes from any WiFi hotspot,"

Actually I believe that was a wanted feature since the day they announced the iPhone -- a way to buy songs wirelessly over wifi. Lots of people on this board wanted it when the Touch came out and had it while the iPhone still didn't.

installing now!

does anyone know what AV cables will work with the iphone since it now supports TV out?

Bill, see my post immediately above yours.

Also, applied update, didn't brick, but didn't expect as I'm unhacked, locked and AT&T-contracted. I did turn off airplane mode -- my version of "Do Not Disturb!" hotel doorknob hanger -- before applying update so all radios were on. Glad I did as update definitely did something different and report "iPhone Is Activated" after it finished, meaning I think it may have needed to contact the AT&T network during the update. But I can't verify that.

Confirmed at the Giz :
"Update 3:26PM: OK, I have updated to 1.1.1 in my unlocked iPhone. It works. You have to put the AT&T card before starting. Video upcoming. Testing of unlock too."

Time to unpack my Iphone this weekend *snicker
I am going to wait into the weekend to make sure everything is on the up and up for firmware 1.1.1. I urge all of those who unlocked to let the iphonedevteam and others to confirm everything is o.k before you update as well...

1603 Error Fix

I have an unmodded iPhone and I keep getting a pop-up saying "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1603)." Prior to this, I had to restore it because it said my iPhone was in recovery mode and had to be restored to its original settings in order for the update to take place. Anyone else have this crap?!

Go to this Apple document for explanation and fix:

If early reports are correct and this is, indeed, not bricking unlocked phones, we have all sorts of things to speculate about!

1. Is Apple *intentionally* not breaking the unlocked phones?

2. Had Apple originally planned on breaking them, and then decided not to after feedback this week?

3. Are all unlocked phones not breaking, or is there a relationship between unlock method and functionality after firmware update?

4. If unlocked phones are not, in fact, breaking, how come people are reporting installer.app breaking?

5. Do phones that start off at 1.1.1 work with the current unlock methods? (This one is of great interest, and it's only a matter of time before we find out!)

Gizmodo reporting that it doesn't brick unlocked phones, video to follow. !!!

I do not care.... app.tapp (*and all that goes with it) is WAY better than the benefit of a wifi store.

But I always thought Apple was blowing air about bricking.... but figured it would be locked down TIGHT with this update. Bet it will be as long (ifnot longer) than the first unlock took to get the next jailbreak working.

I really don't hear any difference in the speaker volume. The earpiece volume seems a bit louder but that's about it. Same distorted speaker volume.

I'm hearing a BIG difference in mine, rarely any distortion. Try turning off your EQ settings in iPod Settings, that may lessen your distortion considerably.

Adobe acquire macromedia in 2005 for 4.1Billion ... Flash is Adobe's baby now...

anyway, i'm not convinced that flash is a resource hog on the iphone, you know, since you can already watch full length movies on the phone, etc... they're probably just waiting for the .h264 flash to happen... it's defiantly coming...

Yeah I knew that (Adobe), I guess just old habits ya know?

I saw the new version of Flash has support for .h264, so its just a matter of time. Of course, iPhone doesn't even allow you to play streaming QuickTime videos even (only thing I have seen is trailers), so there is some work to do.

I do think Flash though is a battery hog, can't be certain, but it sucks the like out of my Apple laptop!

But breaking install.app? No, if they could, they WOULD.

I2. Had Apple originally planned on breaking them, and then decided not to after feedback this week?

I do not think Apple will really do this.

I4. If unlocked phones are not, in fact, breaking, how come people are reporting installer.app breaking?

Two different processes- one is a firmware mod (and lives through a full software update) and one is in software and is erased in the update. By closing the hole and deleting all the custom mods, Jailbreak has no way in anymore. But the UNLOCK is still there.

"Update: Though it was hoped Apple would only be targeting SIM unlockers, the update is confirmed to have broken all 3rd party applications installed via Installer.app. On our iPhone that had 3rd party applications installed (but was NOT unlocked), the update reverted the iPhone back to only Apple-made applications, and the iPhone re-activated itself after installation (similar experiences are being shared in the forum). "

My locked, unhacked, no 3rd party apps, no Installer.app stuff iPhone re-activated itself after installation, too. Seems to be maybe universal.

6. Apple couldn't and wouldn't guarantee that the update wouldn't break unlocked phones.

That's because there are hardware chips on the iPhone dedicated to video decoding. There is no Flash hardware chip, so it has to be done in software. And the processor in this thing isn't all that fast and chews up battery life when it's pushed to go fast.

Actually I believe that was a wanted feature since the day they announced the iPhone -- a way to buy songs wirelessly over wifi. Lots of people on this board wanted it when the Touch came out and had it while the iPhone still didn't.

Two more additions:
- Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
Users have wanted this since first shown on iPod touch.
- Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space

Yes, they're small, but most everyone will appreciate these daily.

Don't want to rehash the 1,000,001 gripes people have vented about, but it would have helped if your post included the 1 or 2 things you wanted to see.

iToner still says that my ringtones are on my phone, but when I go to sounds they are not there. I just tried syncing again and iToner reported no problem but still no tones... I hope they get a fix soon.

how come there's like a fix for everything EXCEPT functions for the phone...
like how come I can't ERASE just a couple calls instead of having to clear the whole menu. Also, it seems like I can't text instantly to a 'group'... unless I setup the 'groups' on addressbook on the computer. Anyone else have gripes about these issues?
Also, on a side note, where can I turn of EDGE?

I was using a falsely activated iphone (I had used iNdependence just to activate it no other modifications or cracking) and it has been reverted back to non-activated status. iNdependence doesnt work, but there havent been any problems. Does anyone know how to falsely activate these now? I really miss my iPDA aka phoneless iPhone.

OK, I'll give you those two and maybe some others. They still strike me as the least desirable of those basics. I'll take your word for it that people wanted a WiFi store, and its not that I have a problem with it being there, its just frustrating that I have a device where I can purchase mp3s over WiFi but I can't text two people at once, MMS, mass delete email, turn the phone sideways in every app, etc. I'm not anti-WiFi store per se, but I do find it frustrating that they had developers spending time on the WiFi store and not doing some of the other things that seem pretty basic.
