The negative black screen issues are a hardware problem - a simple software/firmware update won't fix it.

Yeah. Um. This ipod touch update fixed (via software) whatever negative black issue my phone was having... and it was having it bad. So, yay! and... you were wrong. This is huge news. Mods need to start a new thread for this one.

I don't know if it's been mentioned yet but homemade ringtones (the .m4r hack) with iTunes 4.0 no longer works with the firmware upgrade. :( The ringtones show up in the phone but won't play.

iToner ringtones still on iPhone after 1.1.1

Just updated to 1.1.1, and as others have reported, any ringtones installed via iToner do not show up on the Ringtones menu. However, I setup a few contact specific ringtones–ringtones installed via iToner, and they still work!

OK, I'll give you those two and maybe some others. They still strike me as the least desirable of those basics. I'll take your word for it that people wanted a WiFi store, and its not that I have a problem with it being there, its just frustrating that I have a device where I can purchase mp3s over WiFi but I can't text two people at once, MMS, mass delete email, turn the phone sideways in every app, etc. I'm not anti-WiFi store per se, but I do find it frustrating that they had developers spending time on the WiFi store and not doing some of the other things that seem pretty basic.

Right, but this is the problem -- not everyone has the exact same "want" list. It would've been great to have been showered with more features for this update, but it's rare that one update comes around that fixes every user complaint at the same time. The iPhone's just a few months old now and this is the first major update to the software.

They are probably working on iChat and other apps and features. It would be stupid for them to release everything in one huge update. If they had iChat, Flash, and other features this update likely could have been 500MB or more.

My bet is the iChat App's done. Been done. But they're saving it. For what?

To either combat a "people don't want to update" because they fear an update will break their added software, or to have something to put out when a competitor comes along with something comparable to compete w/ the iPhone.

I set my home button to Favorites instead of iPod functions, but if you turn on, then double click home button without 'sliding to unlock' you get the ipod functions which is a nice way to listen to music without unlocking.

It seems reasonable to think that Apple's announcement was more of "cover your ass" statement than it was a threat to break people's unlocked iPhones. Apple can't possibly guarantee that software updates will take successfully on a phone that has been altered, sometimes physically, from the configuration in which it was released. That's unreasonable. So that little statement about the new software possibly bricking a phone was so that when some idiot sues apple for a dead phone they can in turn say "hey, we told you no guarantees on phones not in original config"

That makes sense; it's just interesting what a big deal Apple made of it.

It's been my experience that even the most insignificant freeware programs have a License Agreement that says something to the effect of, "This software is provided as is and we're not responsible if it blows up your computer."

The fact that Apple executives made statements about this, and that they placed extra warnings in documentation just seems like they wanted folks to see it with big flashing letters and neon signs.

In any case, Apple must have known what the firmware update would and wouldn't do before they released it, so if people are able to keep their unlocked phones at this point, it's clearly what Apple intended...

Wait, so contacts can be assigned a ringtone loaded via iToner, but you just can't make a default ringtone loaded via iToner? I can live with that :)

Is this pre-existing contacts (pre 1.1.1) you assigned, or can you still assign?

No flash support, no right click style copy and paste controls, ......no reason to update.

Folks I don't know why everyone is so antsy to UPDATE their firmware the PSP guys are DOWNGRADING their firmware. Happily I might add! Why? Because the hacks are better than the firmware being put out by the manufacturer.... CLUE PHONE.

Until there is a copy paste command and flash support there is nothing appealing in any way that apple can release that will make an update worthwhile.

Step back and look at the big picture....... Apple ball and chain control with no useable new features or a wide open phone with endless hacks. Pretty easy choice.

PS- has anyone tried restoring from Itunes with the shift method to choose a lower firmware and go back?

i'm sure it's somewhere in here, but i didnt see it after reading 6 pages so....

for those that changed the file name of ringtones to make them work, are those now disabled?
**edit** of course it's on the last page after i post :)

ah well, guess i might hold off until there's another fix for this and apptapp is back to working.

Ringtones are sent to the iPhone, but they don't show up on the list. :(

How did you get your ringtones to the phone? Was it with the itunes workaround or from a software program like itoner? I ask because someone on everything iphone is reporting that his custom ringtones were preserved. He is using 7.4.1.2 itunes and got the ringtones via the itunes workaround method.

Wait, so contacts can be assigned a ringtone, but you just can't make a generic ringtone via iToner? I can live with that :)

Is this pre-existing contacts (pre 1.1.1) you assigned, or can you still assign?

Only for ones that have been already assigned while on 1.0.x

I dont know what you did differently than me... but I have NO custom ringtones... not even for contacts

If you have IMAP email, is it easier to check on the iPhone than pop mail?

No, IMAP on the iPhone is slower and more sluggish. However, IMAP gives you real folders (folders that you create and name), although you do have to pre-create the folders on the IMAP server (you cannot create IMAP folders from the iPhone).

You may be confusing YOUR needs/wants with EVERYONE'S needs/wants ;)

I just updated to 1.1.1.

Whew! I got an error saying my iPhone cannot be restored. I unplugged my iPhone and connected it again and hit restore and it worked.

It is currently syncing my files. I selected new phone instead of update to start from scratch again. I'll let you know it turns out...:p

No video downloads on the Wifi store, only music. No ringtones, podcasts, nuthin else except music.

Too bad I wish they do something about it. i would love to download and watch a movie when I am away from my computer getting bored.

Man...you don't read do you?

He was simply remarking that I mistakenly said "Macromedia's Flash" instead of Adobe. Thats all. Nothing to do with Flash resting in peace, just that the company did. Plus, comparing a software company and a product aren't relevant.

Adobe will need to do some serious work with Flash to continue to be a mainstay in the business.

I will say it again (as I stated in post #269 - I guess you don't read EITHER)!!

I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY, I'M SO ******* SORRY!

I misread the quote. I misread the quote.

There, you happy??

I was actually trying to respond to you and not Unspeaked. Since Adobe bought Macromedia over a year ago, I guess you don't read much either, do you?

And as far as your last statement goes ("Adobe will need to do some serious work with Flash to continue to be a mainstay in the business.") - where are you getting your info from? Business Week, Wall Street Journal?

yeah, I wonder why they didn't make ringtones available. Seems like a no-brainer, but perhaps they couldn't slim up the ringtone editor enough to fit it in the (153.2MB!) iPhone software.
