Disappointed w/iTunes lack of full sync/backup! :-(

I had to do a restore with many restarts of the iPhone and iTunes to get this update installed, likely due to AppTapp, etc.

Why in the world does iTunes not sync your photos or at least back them up automatically?! I was VERY disappointed to see that all my photos and emails were gone after the restore, and never made it to the Mac! :-(

Apple, please make iTunes sync or at least BACKUP EVERYTHING which is user data/media on the iPhone -- at least give us the OPTION to do so!

Apparently we REALLY need Time Machine for iPhone!

My phone was very sluggish after applying the update. Turned the phone off and back on and now it's back to it's snappy self.

... as far as Flash "resting in Peace" - dream on. That has about as much relevance as saying "Photoshop R.I.P."
Dead wrong on this one. :)

Anyone following developments in the field can tell you Flash is at least "on the way out."
i.e. - it will need to seriously re-invent itself to stay alive.

Cross-platform media technology that is not based on open standards is doomed because of the processor overhead and performance issues. There are still thousands of Flash advertisements out there that utilize 100% of your processor just for going to the web page they are situated on. People won't tolerate that now there are better alternatives. One of the reasons it's not on the iPhone is that if the page takes 10 minutes to load and freezes the phone in the interim, Apple knows that people will blame them and not the little flash widget on the site that they maybe can't even see.

Whether they happen to hold on by their fingernails for a while, or morph into something else, "Flash" as we know it today is definitely not going to be around for much longer.

Adobe's recent announcement of their intention to move to *.H264 encoding for Flash is just one step in this direction.

Does it fix the email issue? With my Treo, emails were actually downloaded so when you read them, they openend immediately. With the iPhone, which has WAY more storage, most of the time, it has to retrieve the message from edge, which sometimes can take several minutes or fail with a weak connection. If it has to redownload a message with an attachment, you might be looking at 10 minutes to view a good sized PDF, something my Treo did in a few seconds. Until this is fixed, the iPhone is a poor email solution. So many times I have tried to look something up that is in an email on it, and it tries to retrieve it from edge even though I've already viewed the message multiple times. Emails and attachments should be stored locally by default and not just retrieved when you look at the message. Apple needs to fix this!

Yeah I knew that (Adobe), I guess just old habits ya know?

I saw the new version of Flash has support for .h264, so its just a matter of time. Of course, iPhone doesn't even allow you to play streaming QuickTime videos even (only thing I have seen is trailers), so there is some work to do.

I do think Flash though is a battery hog, can't be certain, but it sucks the like out of my Apple laptop!
It is, Flash is very Math intensive.

Well, I suppose if Apple had bought up MacroMedia, instead of Adobe buying them, thus owning Flash now, then it would be up to Apple to update it. Talk to Adobe about it.

I have a strong feeling that an iphone flash release will probably be timed with an update to flash lite for other mobile platforms. As it stands, flash lite 2.1 uses the old runtime interpreted as2 versus the new fancypants just in time bytecode as3 model, which results in significantly worse performance on all platforms (mobile or otherwise).

I'm sure adobe is working on a JIT version of flash lite based on as3, which will probably have positive performance implications for the mobile platform (ie XML parsing will be possible in decent amounts of time unlike the current 2.1 implementation).

As others have posted it also seems likely that they would wait for the beta9 player which supports h264 to become official before releasing an iphone based player as 264 support on the iphone is already fairly well optimized.

I am not sure that this update is worth all the fuss - I find the iPhone, as it is, to be a great mini-computer with a phone attached - if I wanted more facility, I would take my Macbook Pro with me when I go out on my daily work schedule.
This is the entire point of the iPhone - a small device that covers the technology needs when you are away from your main computer.

Those of you who want every damn application under the sun are just playing - I use my unlocked iPhone in Canada because it improves my daily tasks, saves time, and reduces the stress in my work day.

Isn't that enough? IMHO , it is.

If you are sitting around playing with your iPhone, try reading a book.

Wonderful update! Testing out the Wireless iTunes Store now.

When iTunes asks for your password to download purchased content, the keyboard pops up with almost a black background against the letter keys.. Very sharp! Doesn't match with the rest of the GUI but I love it, almost wish that was universal across iPhone's UI.

The iTunes WiFi Store seems decently fast.. About 1:30 per song, one song at a time. Working my way through the Decemberists' Picturesque right now.

Just to confirm others.. My iPhone's nice and smooth now.. Less jumpy when switching from one app to another. No crashes yet, but I had only one or two anyway since upgrading to 1.0.2 several weeks ago.

I was using a falsely activated iphone (I had used iNdependence just to activate it no other modifications or cracking) and it has been reverted back to non-activated status. iNdependence doesnt work, but there havent been any problems. Does anyone know how to falsely activate these now? I really miss my iPDA aka phoneless iPhone.

You should've waited for new hacks to come out before updating.

OK, I'll give you those two and maybe some others. They still strike me as the least desirable of those basics. I'll take your word for it that people wanted a WiFi store, and its not that I have a problem with it being there, its just frustrating that I have a device where I can purchase mp3s over WiFi but I can't text two people at once, MMS, mass delete email, turn the phone sideways in every app, etc. I'm not anti-WiFi store per se, but I do find it frustrating that they had developers spending time on the WiFi store and not doing some of the other things that seem pretty basic.

I TOTALLY agree with you... hopefully they'll fix some of these issues soon.

Maybe you have been out of the loop, but Adobe now owns Flash, not Macromedia. Macromedia has been "Resting in Peace" for quite some time now.

And as far as Flash "resting in Peace" - dream on. That has about as much relevance as saying "Photoshop R.I.P."

Man...you don't read do you?

He was simply remarking that I mistakenly said "Macromedia's Flash" instead of Adobe. Thats all. Nothing to do with Flash resting in peace, just that the company did. Plus, comparing a software company and a product aren't relevant.

Adobe will need to do some serious work with Flash to continue to be a mainstay in the business.

Louder speakerphone is extremely welcome
It may be a certain percentage louder, but it sure doesn't seem that way to me. Of course, I don't have a side-by-side objective way to test this. IMHO, if it was that much better, it would be immediately noticeable, which to my ears it is not.

That's ok, being able to disable EDGE roaming is the #1 thing to me now as I will be going to Canada soon.

If early reports are correct and this is, indeed, not bricking unlocked phones, we have all sorts of things to speculate about!

1. Is Apple *intentionally* not breaking the unlocked phones?

2. Had Apple originally planned on breaking them, and then decided not to after feedback this week?

3. Are all unlocked phones not breaking, or is there a relationship between unlock method and functionality after firmware update?

4. If unlocked phones are not, in fact, breaking, how come people are reporting installer.app breaking?

5. Do phones that start off at 1.1.1 work with the current unlock methods? (This one is of great interest, and it's only a matter of time before we find out!)

It seems reasonable to think that Apple's announcement was more of "cover your ass" statement than it was a threat to break people's unlocked iPhones. Apple can't possibly guarantee that software updates will take successfully on a phone that has been altered, sometimes physically, from the configuration in which it was released. That's unreasonable. So that little statement about the new software possibly bricking a phone was so that when some idiot sues apple for a dead phone they can in turn say "hey, we told you no guarantees on phones not in original config"

when u plug ur phone into itunes does it give you an option to update the phone or not?

ill just choose not to update...

Email/Imap

Are there any email fixes in this update?

Also, in regards to this post above -

"I check my exchange mail with IMAP"

If you have IMAP email, is it easier to check on the iPhone than pop mail?

Free songs on iTunes Wi-Fi?

There's a whole section of free songs and even free videos on iTunes.

Anyone find any such section on iTunes Wi-Fi? Any free songs out there???

1.1.1 US is different from 1.1.1 UK

So the update did not include the international keyboard that is available on the touch - why not - does Apple not think of us who might SMS in other languages other than English this is so frustrating - and still no option of sending and SMS to multiple people - have we not been complaining about this since day 1.
Well I guess we just keep waiting.

Actually, it is being supported in iPhone 1.1.1 - for the UK, at least.

[sarcasm] Maybe Apple didn't include it for the US version intentionally by political pressures from English First [/sarcasm]

You keep talking yourself into that.
