Did anyone notice that there are some new basic ringtones added - unless I just didn't see them before: Strum, Timba, Pinball, Robot and I think Trill. Can anyone confirm these?

I've been using Strum and Robot since day 1. I don't remember Pinball.

Btw, reading through this post, you'd get the impression that 90% of iPhones out there are hacked in some fashion.

iTunes emails

Does anyone still have an iTunes email to see if it goes to the portable music store when you click on an artist?

I have a question

My music library and everything else is at home.
I am at work right now but i want to update
By me doing the update from work where i have no contacts music etc.

Will it delete everything i have on the iPhone Right now?
Or is it safe to update without worrying about loosing my
data?
Going to new york right after work dont have time to go home
thats why im asking.

you will be fine, i just did it with no problem

I press home or power button to turn on, then press the home button twice. The ipod functions show up at the top of the screen, overlaid on the background image. The slide to unlock still shows at the bottom.

Only functions available are: previous, pause/play, next and volume.

- James

Never mind, I'm dumb. I guess the double tap is for when your phone is NOT on the "slide to unlock" screen. I just did it when I was messing around and it took me right to my Favorites, and when my iPod was playing it had a little pop-up window with the controls and song info. Kinda wish it would go to favorites from the "slide to unlock" screen though and not just iPod controls.

Why BREAK the iPhone?

I have NOT modded my iPhone, buy I'm kind of on the fence about their "breaking" hacks if it angers the consumer.

I think that hacked iPhone warranties should be made void, but not this tug-of-war between iPhone owners who can't wait for extra features and Apple who want to prove that they can "break" what you did, y'know? This reminds me of the initial music war between labels who didn't want their music downloaded and Napster. Now iTunes is huge, and both the labels, artists and apple are benefitting. Can't we find a middle ground and just get along darn it?! :(

Good update in my opinion.

Speaker is definately louder, my favorite part of the update so far.

I also like how you can add a ringtone to a contact (unless that was already there and I didn't see it).

EDGE on/off was long over due.

I doubt I would ever use the iTunes music store, but its nice to have if I ever decide to.

All in all its a good update, happy camper here :)

I checked post of the pages under this thread and didn't see this specific question asked so forgive me if it has already been addressed, but can anyone confirm if the 'unshackled" iPhones via iFuntastic 3.0.5 (or whatever the latest version is) is reset with the 1.1.1 update as well? Thanks!

Sorry if this has been answered already but

do the custom ringtones work anymore after the firmware update?

kinda scared to upgrade, dont want to lose my ringtones.

apparently if you dont touch them and leave them as is after the update they still work although i never tested this i couldnt hear them in the ringtone selecter.

I ended up taking one for the team trying to solve this removing them and re adding them and then accidentally updating to itunes 7.4.2. i want the older one back anybody know how to get it?

I used iBrickr on my XP system previous to this release and had several ringtones, different sounds for lock/unlock, etc and all have disappeared. However, in Contacts it says now under my wife's number "user:Fergie..." where I had uploaded a custom Fergie ringtone for her. However, now when she calls it reverts to the default iPhone ringtone, so the ringtone file is not there even if it says it is.

My update went smoothly, and did a re-activation. But I lost no email, photos, contacts, phone records, etc...

I sorely miss my installer.app items...the iPhone looks kinda ugly without summerboard on there!

Love the Home button enhancements. And speaker volume is increased IMHO.

Also, the Apple video says the TV out works with "Apple AV cords", not sure which one. I'm going to try my DLO Home Dock (I have regular and deluxe as well) when I get home tonight to see if that works for TV out on iPhone, it does work for my 30gVideoiPod. Otherwise, I'm off to the Apple store tonight at the mall to see what cables are avail...

Good update overall, eventhough I (temporarily so far) lost all my installer.app apps.

TV-out will only work with the forthcoming (2 -3 weeks on online store) Apple cables, for US$49 but come with USB cable for powering off computer or included AC adapter. Component or composite flavors available separately. They have some sort of Apple authentication chip in them: all new iPods support video out, nano, Classic, touch, iPhone will require that authentication chip; 3rd party products will appear, but they will have to be redesigned for the new models. Glad I still have my video iPod and Apple composite A/V out headphone jack cable until then.

I personally think this update is a joke. No IM, no mention of native apps capability to provide functionality that Apple isn't providing, still no copy/paste.

Someone mentioned earlier that Apple basically created a possible new way for us to give them $$ and not much more. Based on some recent reports of Apple sending shutdown notices we know they are aware of the wants and needs out there and they chose as a main part of the update the ability to buy music.

A new Curve with REAL GPS will be out soon and my iPhone will be for sale.

For those who are not near wifi, and they just REALLY need to have that 4mb song, AND they have about an hour to spare downloading it..
Uh, it would take about 4-5 minutes to download a song over a typical EDGE connection (even less in some cases). Song previews might be a little tedious, but still usable. I wouldn't want to use it a lot but I would love to have it as an option. That's the whole point of EDGE, so you can always get online.

My guess is AT&T was just concerned about the huge increase in traffic it would have given them. Plus this way Apple can tout it as a great new feature when the 3G iPhone rolls around!

How do you change alert volume?
I believe the alert volume is now linked with the ringer volume.

Wha?? Anyone else have a working iToner?

Just to be clear, since I posted about this. Don't know if it matters but:

1. My ringtone was the "cellphone ringing" found in Granageband; and

2. I restored last night and installed it again on the phone via iToner, and it still shows up in my ringtone list (and works) post update. I have NOT tried to see if I could install any ringtones via iToner AFTER the update - only stating that I can still see (and use) the ringtone I stuck in there last night. Maybe it matters that the loop I used came form an Apple product?

3. When I used iToner last night, I did NOT use the newest version (i.e., I did not let iToner update itself).

4. I do not let iTunes sync my ringtones.

Again, don't know if it matters, but just sharing my info . . .

Depends on how you created the ringtone, if you did the self made version (.m4a) then just assign all your custom ringtones to your contacts, then update to 1.1.1. You should find that they will continue to work when the contacts calling you, the default ringtone however, will revert back to the default one.

This also works for alarms, if you assign a custom ringtone to an alarm, they will still work after the update.

...At least in my experience thus far.

Still not seeing anything in the update that qualifies as a need to anyone except turning edge off and that can be done without the update. (hack)

And I'm not seeing any 3rd party apps that qualify as a "need" (and yes, I have 3rd party apps loaded as of now). :)

I am not sure that this update is worth all the fuss - I find the iPhone, as it is, to be a great mini-computer with a phone attached - if I wanted more facility, I would take my Macbook Pro with me when I go out on my daily work schedule.
This is the entire point of the iPhone - a small device that covers the technology needs when you are away from your main computer.

Those of you who want every damn application under the sun are just playing - I use my unlocked iPhone in Canada because it improves my daily tasks, saves time, and reduces the stress in my work day.

Isn't that enough? IMHO , it is.

If you are sitting around playing with your iPhone, try reading a book.

If you don't like it don't install it. You bought your iPhone as it was which means you should have been happy with it when it was stock so don't complain. Apple doesn't have to do any updates. I personally am happy to have the home button controls and the double tap space shortcut. I would have been happy with an update of just those. iTunes WiFi is cool, but I doubt I will use it often. Be patient, more and more things will come in the next few months. If you can't wait, then enjoy your Curve.

Hmm my speaker is louder but when playing the ipod the volume doesnt change whether its in the middle or all the way up, the volume stays the same...weird

I just installed the update with a whole lot of mods that I had installed through Installer.app, including Summerboard and cosmetic hacks, as well as 3rd-party applications, and the software update worked flawlessly. I didn't have to restore. All the apps, including Installer.app, are gone. I did, although, get a weird error when downloading the firmware. Notice what's wrong?

The filesize went way past 152.3MB, and kept going up. I just stopped it after a while.

It is 10.4.10, and I would prefer iTunes to automatically transfer both photos and emails to the Mac without having to interact with iPhoto. I was behind in transferring photos to iPhoto, and when iTunes did the iPhone restore, photos and emails (IMAP) were lost locally on the iPhone. :-(

mine has always backed up my emails that i had on there. Iphoto should sync your photos for you or are you using a pc

Call me crazy, but I am excited about the increased volumes more than anything. I like to talk on speakerphone in the car, and that was my only knock on the phone compared to my old Nokia.

I agree (substitute my old RAZR).

Updated speaker is wonderful, so far. I can actually hear podcasts now without straining! Forget lack of Flash support, MMS, etc...the low speaker volume was the most irritating thing about this phone. If you can't hear calls, you can't call it a "killer app"! I will test it in my car later. Please post (and that goes for anyone) if you hear better results in your car than before.
