As much as I would like to see it, I think no Edge iTunes is to do more with Apple protecting consumption of the ATT network. They don't need a million people DL'ing 4mb on a limited network. For that same reason, I doubt there will be any streaming media players (such as Pocket Tunes on the Treo) which pretty much blows. BTW: I consistently was able to stream a 128 stereo mp3 stream on the Treo over ATT/Edge.

Let this also be a forceful prodding to Apple to give Adobe everything they need to front burner Flash for iPhone. It is kinda' important to deliver what they sold us as Apple said in one of the commercials in the impressive series "...all the parts of the internet are on the iPhone."

In another ad (Watered Down), the claim is "This is not a watered down version of the internet, or the mobile version of the internet, or the kinda sorta looks like the internet internet. It's just the internet. On your phone." Clearly this is not the case because we are still missing key components of the internet which cause us to use the iPhone version of the internet.

Note to Apple: YouTube is NOT the internet. YouTube is YouTube and the version you gave us is the iPhone version, not the "just the internet" version. (Hmmm...FLASH!!!!!!)

Also missing...multiple email sigs. Duh. Are they hiring $12 an hour coders on Guru to program this thing or will I have to buy iPhone Mail Pro to get the features that should already be there?

And to top it off, Speakerphone volume is unchanged on my iPhone after the update. That's what I was happy to see on the list of improvements, but it seems to be missing in implementation. All of you hoping for something so badly that you think yours is really louder need to make an appointment with an ENT.

Maybe I should reset PRAM? Perhaps I should unplug my iPhone for 2 minutes? Restart with the Shift key pressed to disable my extensions?

Wait for 1.1.2?

TV-out will only work with the forthcoming (2 -3 weeks on online store) Apple cables, for US$49 but come with USB cable for powering off computer or included AC adapter. Component or composite flavors available separately. They have some sort of Apple authentication chip in them: all new iPods support video out, nano, Classic, touch, iPhone will require that authentication chip; 3rd party products will appear, but they will have to be redesigned for the new models. Glad I still have my video iPod and Apple composite A/V out headphone jack cable until then.

Fudge. I like watching (mostly music) videos in my SUV's TV screens when I make my wife drive. Now I'll have to take off the dash again for yet another install of a set of cables. The "auth-chip" for a lowly cable seems to be a really harsh thing to do to a consumer.

I guess I'll stick with my iPodVideo as well. Darn, was hoping to finally not have to use it...

I bet you will have to pay for it in the new WiFi iTunes store... :-(

AppTapp has a community one that is free, though! ;-)

My bet is the iChat App's done. Been done. But they're saving it. For what?

To either combat a "people don't want to update" because they fear an update will break their added software, or to have something to put out when a competitor comes along with something comparable to compete w/ the iPhone.

I don't think it did this before, but now when you leave the weather app and return to it, you will be at the last location you looked at. I think in the last version it always returned you to the beginning of your list.

Yes, this is new. On 1.0.2 it returns to the first one.

Man, I can't express how bummed I am that there is no MMS & Multi-SMS.:confused::eek::mad::(

The only thing that I can think of is that in Leopard they are going to incorporate a way to save/backup SMS conversations, and hopefully MMS. This is the only logical excuse that I can think of as to why Apple is holding out on us. EVERY PHONE I've owned in the past 4 years has had this feature.

Bollocks.

That being said, I am more than stoked on the volume fix. Thanks Apple.

Depends on how you created the ringtone, if you did the self made version (.m4a) then just assign all your custom ringtones to your contacts, then update to 1.1.1. You should find that they will continue to work when the contacts calling you, the default ringtone however, will revert back to the default one.

This also works for alarms, if you assign a custom ringtone to an alarm, they will still work after the update.

...At least in my experience thus far.

FYI at least one other person has noted no change in ringtones (in other words the default is still a custom ringtone after the update). I am trying to figure out why some work and some don't. He was using itunes 7.4.1.2 on windows. He got the ringtones via the itunes workaround (M4r to m4a as final step) Any ideas what would cause some to work and some not?

Re whatever missing features people are angry that this update does not deliver:

This is not the last iPhone update :)

I believe this "authentication chip" to be a myth, possibly started at iLounge. I'd be interested in confirmation either way. Where did you hear about this chip?

The reality, I believe, is that Apple simply changed how video-out worked: a side-effect of component video being added.

Video accessories must be one of the smallest segments of iPod accessories, and Apple only competes in one SUB-segment of that (cables). It's hard for me to believe Apple would create some chip just to interfere with 3rd-party video accessories that Apple formerly blessed as Made For iPod.

I'll believe the "authentication chip" when I see evidence. Otherwise I think it's safe to assume that new 3rd-party accessories that are compatible with the new improved video-out connection will be coming soon.

I have NOT modded my iPhone, buy I'm kind of on the fence about their "breaking" hacks if it angers the consumer.

I think that hacked iPhone warranties should be made void, but not this tug-of-war between iPhone owners who can't wait for extra features and Apple who want to prove that they can "break" what you did, y'know? This reminds me of the initial music war between labels who didn't want their music downloaded and Napster. Now iTunes is huge, and both the labels, artists and apple are benefitting. Can't we find a middle ground and just get along darn it?! :(

Considering that some hacks--even some SIM unlocks--have survived the update just fine, and given that Apple said they are neither interested in blocking NOR promoting 3rd-party apps at this time, I don't see any tug of war. Apple does not want to "prove they can break" stuff. Sometimes, by their contract with AT&T they have to do that. But more likely is that stuff will just break naturally. Apple is making changes to the OS and software, and over-writing outdated files. Of COURSE some hacks will break. The only way to avoid that would be for Apple to officially test and support the hacks, and modify their own software to make sure the hacks keep working.

The speakercebo effect!

Don't be fooled. Its a marginal increase at best.

Dissapointing to know it actually is a hardware issue.

I personally think this update is a joke. No IM, no mention of native apps capability to provide functionality that Apple isn't providing, still no copy/paste.

Someone mentioned earlier that Apple basically created a possible new way for us to give them $$ and not much more. Based on some recent reports of Apple sending shutdown notices we know they are aware of the wants and needs out there and they chose as a main part of the update the ability to buy music.

A new Curve with REAL GPS will be out soon and my iPhone will be for sale.

Hmmm, so what you're saying is, make all my custom ringtones now and assign em to somebody now... cuz its now or never?

That sounds great,
But I thought that the latest version of itunes makes these ring tones null (which is why I diddnt upgrade. Is this true, or do you need to install the update via the previous version of itunes? Please let me know. Thanks

I agree (substitute my old RAZR).

Updated speaker is wonderful, so far. I can actually hear podcasts now without straining! Forget lack of Flash support, MMS, etc...the low speaker volume was the most irritating thing about this phone. If you can't hear calls, you can't call it a "killer app"! I will test it in my car later. Please post (and that goes for anyone) if you hear better results in your car than before.

Best part for me too. I could rarely talk to anyone while driving because it was so low I couldn't hear them. And is it me...or are the white dots not there anymore?

An explanation is here:
http://www.palm.com/us/software/chatteremail/faq.html#imap_pop3

IMAP vs POP3

Why should I use IMAP rather than POP3?
Advantages of IMAP
IMAP is far, far faster than POP3 and uses far less data; this is particularly true for large mailboxes. For example, just determining which messages need to be downloaded and/or deleted in a POP3 mailbox with 1000 messages would typically require 100k of data to be transferred; with IMAP, this would be closer to 8K. Also, loading, say the first 5 lines of an email would typically take 5x or more as much data as with IMAP. Doing a "load more" of a POP3 message requires 1) a full sync—the part that takes 100k for a 1000 message mailbox, plus 2) reloading everything in the message from prior to the "load more". With IMAP, only the "more" part gets loaded; this is a HUGE savings.
IMAP is far, far more efficient at dealing with attachments. To even determine whether attachments exist, the entire message must be loaded (a horrible example would be the case of a 1k attachment following a 1MB attachment; in POP3, you wouldn't even know the 1k attachment existed until reading the entire 1MB attachment). In IMAP, attachments are known completely at the outset and each can be loaded independently.
IMAP keeps state information on messages—replied, seen, flagged; none of this is possible on POP3. Read a message on your Treo and it appears read in Outlook back at home, or in the office.
IMAP allows unlimited nested folders that appear on every client; in POP3, folders are local—messages "filed" in this way on one device can't be seen on any other device.
IMAP allows true push operation; POP3 does not. (Most IMAP servers support this, including AOL/AIM)
IMAP allows mailboxes to be completely sync'ed, so that changes made on one device are reflected on the other; no more worries about "where" a message lives (this is akin to webmail). With POP3, it's hard to know whether a message read on one device will even be available to another device (especially with Gmail!).
IMAP allows sent mail to be uploaded back to the server, so you can keep your sent mail in one place; POP has no such facility.
IMAP is relatively inexpensive, $20/yr or less in many cases. Some are "free", like AIM.
Most POP3 accounts allow forwarding to IMAP
IMAP is supported by all major PC/Mac clients—Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Entourage, Pine, etc...

Actually, IMAP should be faster than POP3 as it only checks for new messages whereas POP always downloads everything.

Hmmm, so what you're saying is, make all my custom ringtones now and assign em to somebody now... cuz its now or never?

yeah, that's pretty much the case if you want to upgrade to 1.1.1. Also, read my post above this one, don't change a thing, because the moment you go to the list it'll revert back to the default ringtone.

That sounds great,
But I thought that the latest version of itunes makes these ring tones null (which is why I diddnt upgrade. Is this true, or do you need to install the update via the previous version of itunes? Please let me know. Thanks

I'm still on iTunes 7.4.2, you don't need 7.4.3 to upgrade to 1.1.1

So the update did not include the international keyboard that is available on the touch - why not - does Apple not think of us who might SMS in other languages other than English this is so frustrating - and still no option of sending and SMS to multiple people - have we not been complaining about this since day 1.
Well I guess we just keep waiting.

Actually, the Internaional Keyboard is there in a way. Go to Mail, begin a new message. While typing, if you hold down certain keys for about a second, many options will pop up for that letter. This works with all the vowels, C, and N that I have tried. Very nice implementation IMO.

mine has always backed up my emails that i had on there. Iphoto should sync your photos for you or are you using a pc

iPhoto does NOT sync many iPhone users iPhone pic libraries.
Well documented.
This represents one of my biggest issues: I was able to sync maybe the 1st ~400 pics, but the following ~500 pix... no luck.
iPhoto does not auto launch nor does it recognize iPhone when the app IS launched. And no, Image Capture does not recognize iPhone either. and I have tried all of the suggested work around. None of them work.

I was hoping the iLife 08 update would address this.
Nope.
THen I hoped this firmware addressed this issue.
Nope.

And if this firmware update DOES reset my iPhone... I think I'll just hold off as I'd hate to loose some of those pix that have yet to find their way to my Mac.
And no, individually emailing or uploading ~500 pix to my Web Gallery is a less than desirable option.

Hopefully Apple can fix this sooner than later.
I send feedback, daily.

I noticed that my default ringtone was still the custom ringtone, but stupid me went and click on it to see if my custom ringtones still showed up on the list, and that made it revert back to the default one, so if you just leave it be, it'll continue to use what was there before.

That may explain a lot actually. It is possible that many of the people who posted that the itunes workaround custom ringtones don't work after the update may have not known to not change anything. Doesn't make it very functional to be sure in terms of changing your ringtones but that is very good info. to know!

Arrrrghhhh

Got the dreaded iPhone 1604 or something error, had to restore phone. Guess unshackling with iCraptastic 3.0.5 doesn't make much of a difference than unjailing. So long custom ringtones, icons and wallpapers. I love Apple but this makes me miss my ObEx enabled RAZR just a lil bit. :(

Ok, it took me three attempts before iTunes let me restore my iPhone. I lost it when it kept giving me that "1604" error and said if my phone is bricked, I'm done lol. Still updating, hoping it works...
