What the hell is everyone complaining about that Apple locked down the phone? Geez, how dare they keep you from illegally hacking and changing the software on their device that explicitly says all over the place you're not permitted to do so.

(Emphasis mine.) I must be missing something that is obvious to you. Can you point to the law or laws that prohibit installation of third party software on computers you own?

It's not illegal for you to try and unlock your phone or install 3rd party apps but it's not illegal for Apple to try and prevent it either.

on your mark....get set.....

Google Phone please

I'm waiting for the Google Phone to land. I think Google will get it right. Fortunately I already have a buyer for my iPhone.

Apple continues to make the same frigging mistake that they have made for years. Shortsighted and with a close mind.

Apple could have blown everyone away had the iPhone had been $399 (8GB) to begin with and had there had been a SDK available to programmers to develop 3rd party applications and widgets.

What a waste of a beautiful device. How stupid can a company be. Will they never learn from their past mistakes. Sigh.

Love my MacBook Pro though!

Brain dead?

I think this is a great new feature. You hear a song on the radio, in a store, at a friends. I can now go to the itunes store and purchase it on the fly.

Maybe someone travels a lot and can't get to their home computer that quickly. Many reasons for why someone would love to have this feature.

If you don't like the feature, don't update/use it.

I love it and very happy they added it to the phone.

anyone bought their iPhone to genius bar to get it repair or get a replacement? I'm trying to get my iPhone fix due to incorrect sim

Grow up

Yes, you're right, Steve Jobs and the other employees of Apple Inc. have no idea what they are doing. They just redefined (and saved) the Music business. They are on the cutting edge of design like no other company in the world.

Their stock doubles in value every year. Yes they don't know what they are doing.

Here's hoping they keep it up.

Update worked just fine on my non-hacked iPhone. To be honest the novelty of the phone has pretty much worn off and this update, though fine, really brings nothing to the table that is note worthy.

Apple really needs to make an installer.app style of program and open the iPhone up for some 3rd party apps. I don't care if they make you buy the third party apps through iTunes.

To be honest I'm not a big cell phone guy and really only bought the iPhone to access my email on the go and some web browsing stuff when I'm away from the MacBook Pro.

I guess I sort of hoped the iPhone would evolve into more of a handheld computer that happened to work as a phone. With Apple being so closed about the iPhone's eco-system it looks like I was too optimistic.

Please don't think its a compaint, I knew the risks and thought I'd get more into the cell phone culture. It just hasn't happened for me so the other apps on the device is where its at for me.

Hopefully as time goes on we will have more choices.

Can you point to where the OP suggested that installing third party software was not allowed?

Installation of third-party software is a separate issue from illegal hacking of protected code. Installation is perfectly legal. Breaking the law to get to the point where you can do so is still breaking the law.
once I purchase the device, its my device, not theirs.
At no point does the software (or any part thereof) become yours. The handset is yours to possess, dispossess, resell, or destroy, sure. The software and all of its aspects remains wholly owned by Apple. You can wholly replace that Apple software with your own or a third party's (assuming said software is itself not breaking any legal constraints). Their exercise of their property is not in conflict with your use of yours.
I desperately hope they release a sdk that will allow applications that will not be affected by updates, sandboxed for safety, and allow for the extension of an awesome device -- then everyone will be happy.
As do I. But I had no expectation of seeing one before Leopard was out and running smooth. Too much of the iPhone relies on work happening elsewhere for Leopard, and Apple is far too secretive to give anyone a jumpstart on the new XCode (and given that Leopard being still in development means that some things would be likely to change). Once Leopard is finalized, the iPhone SDK can go forward.

anyone else notice zero improvement in the speakerphone?
ME!!! I am pleased with the update (generally), but here are things I wish they could have changed...

1. iPhone Speakerphone, actually seems quieter! It's a joke... they shouldn't have claimed it was louder if it wasn't.

2. Email should rotate to widescreen on just a normal message, not just attatchments.

3. Double-Tapping Home Button should allow you to choose any part of the phone to go to... not just iPod and Phone Favorites.

I love the new iTunes wi-fi store... well done Apple! Very nice, and tightly integrated with the phone's iPod, and with iTunes. This is by far the most appealing feature of the update.

Also, I love how two spaces inserts a period... despite David Pogue's drag finger tip, I've found myself not using it that much... this I will use though!

Can't wait for the update when Leopard Ships! cough cough ichat iwork bonjour mms cough cough

I dont think the update is bad. One thing I have noticed is that wifi is not disconnected when you turn the phone off, at least not disconnected fast.

I'm wondering if you guys went to apple store to mac genius and try to get the iphone repair for "incorrect sim"? I'm planning to go there tomorrow and try to get my iPhone fixed because I updated my iPhone with my current AT&T card and got the "incorrect sim" message. I just got the iPhone 2 weeks ago. Will they replace my phone since I'm under 1 year warranty? Thanks
I did and I got a replacement phone. I'm waiting for it to activate now.

The built in quicktime player on the iPhone supports both streaming audio and video, and there are already quite a few streaming radio stations out that work great with the iphone (even provide iphone-like pages). You can do it over EDGE.

I bought an iPhone for some chick, and that was about the first thing she did...found it on google no less.

which radio stations do you recommend that stream well on the iPhone?

I hate iPhone updates. Just like with 1.0.2 it fudged my iPhone and I have to do a complete restore. I could see this maybe if I had any third party apps or an unlocked phone, but no sir, never had time in install any third party apps.

I had a bunch of photos, calendar events, and new contacts not saved to the computer yet.

screw Apple.

Just a little FYI . . . next time when you are going to update your iPhone software, you might want to consider Syncing your iPhone with your computer first. This way, if there is any kind of problem, you always have all of your iPhone items Synced back to your computer.

I'm kind of confused as to why they make you enter your itunes password on the phone. This should be something apple steamlined. You can only sync with a single computer, so let the phone detect your itunes account and then have it always on!

Of course, if you lose your phone....

question: are we all so totally braindead that we need to buy music from our cell phone? i mean besides the media we put on at home we are bombarded everywhere with tv's and/or muzak. so, dear apple, using that shiny new wifi itunes button would probably be the very last thing i would do on this planet.

PS you can stick that iphone update you know where... app.tap is worth alot more than 1.1.1

The majority of music purchases are impluse. So the more they can get the impluse purchase in front of you the better. Go analyze that...

maybe they'll offer it as an option but i know alot of people wouldnt want to stay logged in. Letting your kids take your phone and having access to the itunes store might run up a CC bill

Google Maps works!

I can finally use Google Map on the iPhone! Before, the map would run out of control every time I zoomed in. Now it works like it should. Personally, I like that Apple is polishing the interface right now. On the other hand, I hope for better synchronization options in the future (wirelessly sync using .Mac accounts, and the ability to sync some sort of ToDo list).

All these new developments makes me wonder, how they are going to sell them more this xmas.

I hear VZW laughing all the way to the bank!!

Laughing to the bank with what?
Someone buying an iPhone tomorrow has nothing to worry about with todays updates. (I just did the double space bar hit for the first time....cool!)
Apple did not do anything wrong today! Anyone who buys an iPhone with the intention of using a non-authorized provider does so at their on risk.
Am I bummed that Installer doesn't work? Yes, but I'm not concerned because I know that it will again soon.
I would not be surprised if Apple sell 10 million units in less than a year.
