Sadly Apple has come down on iPhone users with an iron fist. But even worse it's shocking to see so many users agreeing with Apple over this, for ****s sake people grow a back bone and stand up for your consumer rights.

Just so we're clear.... Apple offers for sale a device, informing everyone from the beginning that for the first 24 months, at least, it will be updated from time to time to add features, etc., and that it will only function properly on the at&t network. Some buyers don't like those limitations, modify their phones to work as they want them to, and then complain when Apple's updates don't support their modifications. And you think that as a consumer, you are entitled to have Apple, in its updates/upgrades, take into consideration and support whatever modifications you decide to make???

At least it Apple is replacing iPhones that were disabled by the update. I picked one up at the apple store yesterday. I just have to go through the headache of reactivating and porting my number in iTunes.

This is my main beef with the current hacker situation: it's like a catch-22.

Apple should open the iPhone becuase it will spur some great 3rd party apps. But there seems to be very little need to *hack* the iphone because the benefit isn't worth all the trouble: the apps just aren't there yet. O

Install Install.app and look at the insane amount of Apps you can put on your phone. In fact, installer.app alone is one of the slickest package managers out there. All this and they are not even using any documentation from Apple.

Actually, there are many people I know that are holding onto 1.0.2 because they think the 3rd party apps currently available are worth more than the couple of new features 1.1.1 offers.

I'm one of the faction that believes Apple is doing the right thing by keeping the iPhone locked down. (you can flame-on if you like).

My principal feeling is that Apple has the best chance of maintaining and growing a highly reliable experience on the iPhone. The more 3rd party stuff that goes on, the more Apple has to deploy resources to chase it's tail. These forums are evidence enough that most of the hacked phones and phones with poorly written 3rd party apps end up back at Apple. Now Apple has to deploy it's resources to chase this stuff. I'd rather have Apple developing new software for the iPhone than chasing a bunch of avoidable problems.
:)

Heck, I don't care if it is locked down, at least if they would give us 'useful' apps like a way to edit notes on the mac, secure info manager, email check times per account, document storage. Just he simple things that most other 'dumb' pocketpc's have. Until then, I will be forced to use 3rd party apps.

It would be nice if Apple would adopt the Installer.app way of doing things where everything is a package and let them have some approval process.

hey thomas, HOW MUCH ARE THEY PAYING APPLE SHILLS THESE DAYS?

iBricking iPhones is another way for Apple to make money. They knew that literally 200,000+ thousand iPhones have been unlocked. Rage against the machine, but I love the wit of Apple. Apple is laughing their asses off right now. They realize that so many people are going to have to purchase new iPhones from this, they know that people won't make such an expensive mistake twice.

Don't be so sure that the iPhone will get hacked anytime soon either. Even if it does, people hacking it immediately are going to be test mice for the hackers and this will equate to more iBricks.

Apple is going to progressively make it harder and harder to hack the iPhone to a point where the benefits won't outway the hassle.

Jobs' is cracking up right now and knows that it's really the hackers that are the idiots. Talented idiots, but nonetheless, idiots in his book. It all generates more sales and more PR.

are you insinuating that apple users are totally insane? that they will go out like lemmings to buy ANOTHER FREAKIN IPHONE, right after apple willfully destroyed their personal property? i hope not, otherwise this is a sure indication that our western society will not be around for much longer.

I'm all for consumer rights, but doesn't Apple have the right to allow whatever wireless company they wish do business with them? Are we going to start demanding who manufactures each component of an iPod or Macbook? Let's all grow a backbone and demand that Apple allow all it's users hack every product they possibly can and then let them fix and replace all the broken and worthless hardware. Oh wait....they already are.

I think I'm going to grow a backbone and demand that Bank of America stop charging ATM fees for using other banks' ATMs. Oh wait...they have every right to do that and it's my CHOICE to get fleeced.

Iron fist?! Ha ha ha! Apple's already bent over backward for all the sniveling, whining iPhoners who shelled out $200 ON THEIR OWN ACCORDS. I think I'm going to demand that macrumors be changed to macwhiners.com. Now that I think of it, I'm sure it's already out there.

itoner works, but noticing a video bug

two things:

1) my itoner (1.0.2) ringtones (assigned to contacts and in general) are working after the update.

2) when i come to the end of a video, it no longer prompts me if i want to delete the file. certainly not a big deal, just seems odd.

Ok, my $.02, I don't agree with the unlocking, I have AT&T and don't have an issue, if you don't want At&T so be it, just don't get the phone and you can be jealous of us that do.

But I feel that Apple needs to come out with a software development kit for the iPhone and it may show up with Leopard, people just want to run software that they want and that is the issue, first thing to go would be the iTunes wireless store, I don't have a need for it, I hate using Meebo for IM, I upgraded and miss play iBlackjack but it will be a couple weeks and the apps will be back.

Then don't waste you hard earned money...

Then don't waste you hard earned money on products that are sold, since day one, as locked and not open to third party developers. People do things they know they shouldn't do and then fail to take responsibility for their acts.

There are usually two boats: The "I love the iPhone and the software Apple developed" boat, so if you are in this one, keep it like that. Then there is the "the iPhone misses so much functionality that should be there, even my $10 nokia has it" boat, if you are in this one, why did you buy it in the first place?

It is not a crime to explore and simply have 'fun' with the software or hardware you have paid hard earned money for this is NOT a crime and and users who want to try and unlock their phones should not be penalized just because O2 or AT&T want a monopoly that ties people into a long and expensive contract for months.

Why did you buy such crappy product then?

Apple showed a phone with some"very limited features" compared to most other 'dumb' pocketpc's, at a very stiff price, said it would be locked to AT&T, and that only third party apps using the web would be allowed, and what did you do? wait in line to buy it. There is something wrong in that picture.

One of the smarter posts here in awhile. People today are definitely suffering from entitlement issues it seems...

actually...

It is more likely our western society will not be around due to people believing that Apple 'willfully destroyed their personal property'. That is why you have those lawsuits that you only see in America.

Since the customer pays *FULL* price for the iPhone, the customer has the right to choose for themselves what carrier they want to use the iPhone with.

:)

Really? MOST phones with hacks and third party apps end up back at apple? Can you point me to some examples where installing apptapp installer and putting on a few, or any third party apps actually damaged an iPhone beyond just restoring it from iTunes?

It sounds like Apple is deploying resources anyway to stop the phone from being hacked

one more thing...

Just remember:

If next month, or next year with the iPhone 2, or the year after, or whenever, Apple releases an SDK and opens the iPhone platform, it will be because that is what they have planned since the beginning, and the platform will be mature enough and ready for it, etc. It will not be because "the brave hackers who fought the Evil Apple when they re-locked their phones with the 1.1.1 update" I can see those posts already ;)

i thought i did read the posts.... i didn't upgrade to 7.4.3, all my ringtones were assigned to contacts, but i wanted to actually listen to them through the speakerphone to hear how loud they were after the update!
guess i'll just have to wait until there's another hack to add them back again. apple's ringtones are simply terrible. now i can't wait until someone figures out a simple hack for the text alerts as well. thankfully there's a little something different from apple, but who comes up with these tones? horrible.

Makes me wonder if you had read all the posts... First of all, it's the .m4a files that still works, and for it to work, you have to have iTunes 7.4.2, and you also have to assign them to your contacts first before you update to 1.1.1

after the update, you cannot go and check if your ringtone still shows up in the list, if you do, it will revert back to default. As long as you don't click on the ringtone to change, it will remain in the phone.

So, it's not misinformation, you just need to read more carefully, there is no time restriction on updating your iPhone...:D

I do not feel that as a consumer of an iPhone anyone should be complaining that their phone got bricked due to hacking, they knew the risks and still took the jump....

However, on that note. I believe I am in between your "I love the iPhone and the software Apple developed" boat and your "the iPhone misses so much functionality that should be there, even my $10 nokia has it"...because:

I love the iPhone, I bought it for the features it had and love every one of them, but at the same time I believe that some features were skipped in the development that should have been there. Am I complaining? No. Am I wishing that there had been some of the missing features included? Yes.

This is where the 3rd party apps come in. I installed 3rd party apps because it filled the gaps and added to the features I have already come to love in this amazing device.

I believe if you had a taste of the 3rd party apps out there, you would agree with me...but maybe not.

Nope. Part of the condition of the sale is "requires 2-year contract with AT&T." Written all over the box, all over their Web pages and in iTunes.

No sympathy from me for anyone who's phone is borked because they went outside thos parameters to get it activated.

You can add ring tones with iTunes 7.4.0 and MakeiPhoneRingTone.
I have added 9 so far.

looks like many of the legit AT&T users/subscribers can no longer stand the waves and waves of whining from the hackers/unlockers/unlocker-wannabes/iPhone-less posers and decided to make their voice heard after all.

I'm slightly disappointed that everything broke with this update, as I live in Singapore and was planning to buy an iPhone sometime very soon, but you know what? I'm on the side of the legit users. Stop whining people, it will only make all of you whiners look pathetic.

I'll just wait a bit more for a new unlock process.

I don't understand why you post here.

good to see sensible responses around here...

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you are saying. What I don't have is sympathy for those clamouring that Apple did them wrong and are 'demanding' as consumers (ant their rights) the platform to be opened at once. I think this will happen eventually, and as I said in another post, because Apple has planned that already, not because the whiners here.

All this is to say that posts with proper explanations, comments, etc. and common sense like yours seem to be the exception in this thread.

One good thing is that some of the features you would like to have are going to be added since Apple is still improving the product.

BTW, I don't even have an iPhone. I live in Canada and I suspected those hacking methods, specially exploiting an overflow bug, will not last forever.

I do not feel that as a consumer of an iPhone anyone should be complaining that their phone got bricked due to hacking, they knew the risks and still took the jump....
