I would say let engadget or appleinsider figure out if installer.app can still be used. Give them time, it has only been an hour...

I bet it's just some software "switch" that tells the wifi store if wifi is on and connected. If this "swich" can be bypassed, I'm sure it can work over edge. But really SLOW..

Umm?? The iTunes WiFi store was not designed to work over edge??
Hence the name, WiFi??? Who the hell would want to download a 4mb song over Edge?

No iTMS through EDGE

After installing the new update, the first thing I did was try to connect to the iTMS. It won't let you do that through EDGE. You must be connected through a Wi-Fi network. Guess that's why they call it iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store :p

First negative I have noticed.

Try playing music through the speaker. Whatever they did to increase the audio for rings and speaker-phone, butchered music playback.

Hmm. Hope that doesn't mean that wifi iTunes purchases are "optimized" like YouTube vids. Better not be 96kbps!

On my iPod Touch songs purchased from iTunes WiFi are exactly the same as if you purchased directly from iTunes on your mac/pc .. the 128kbs .m4p's.

I didn't trust the random download link either so I went to iTunes. Took a couple of clicks on the UPDATE button but then it was there!! Downloading now. 152.3MB!! Says one of the fixes is LOUDER SPEAKER VOLUME AND ALERTS VOLUME!! Nice!

Call me crazy, but I am excited about the increased volumes more than anything. I like to talk on speakerphone in the car, and that was my only knock on the phone compared to my old Nokia.

Loss of symetry

With the new iTunes button on the bottom row, my iPhone screen looks unbalanced, incomplete now. Come on Apple and quickly give us three more apps so everything is symetrical again.

Interesting, I haven't noticed this on all but the highest volume setting. I don't expect much from a tiny cell phone speaker as far as audio quality but I have mine at about 80% with no distortion. I think heavy bass is where the speaker craps out a bit. Me, I'm willing to part a bit with that to have a louder speakerphone for calls.

alert volume?

One of the improvements is supposed to be changing the alert volume. I can find where I can change the alert itself, but not the volume...did I miss that?

Oh, and after installing 1.1.1, but not 7.4.2, my ringtones also disappeared, though I didn't use iToner to create them. They're still in iTunes, but not on the phone.

When i tried to run the installer.app installer again after the 1.1.1 update it hung.

resulted in having to do a restore on my phone. But that was successful.

:D wheeww

that's because Installer.app is specific to which firmware you have. They need to update to support this firmware.

No. The iPhone's headphone jack uses the extra pin for mic, so it's not available for video. Also, the video-out system has been improved to support component video.

Video is now dock-only.

I expect 3rd party video-out cables will show up soon. Apple's is nice but a bit overkill: it comes with a USB charger and the cord branches off to USB for the purpose. Nice for watching hours on TV I guess, but it makes a more complex and bulky cable. (Plus I'd want BOTH composite and component--and for now that means buying two kits and receiving two chargers. Overkill.)

I suppose existing 3rd party cables/video devices don't work yet? iLounge has been pretty vocal about the TV Out being locked on the new iPods unless Apple's cable is connected. I'm guessing the iPhone behaves the same way?

What's your take nagromme? Is there a valid reason for this behavior?

Edit: I agree about including the chargers with the cables, seems like a money grab.

Sending from .Mac Fix??

Does anyone know if the new firmware fixes the issue with some people not being able to send from their .Mac accounts? I've been working with the engineering team for about 7 weeks and the issue still has not been resolved. (Evidently it doesn't affect a ton of users ... but it does affect some including some of the engineering team.):(:(:(

What's in the stores now?

Anyone *just* got an iphone from a store? What's the fw? Will be in Chicago on saturday and will buy one if they're coming with 1.0.2 ... guessing 1.1.1 will be a while for pre-installs?

Can I download this update before my iPhone arrives so that I don't have to wait for it to download after already getting my iPhone?

For those who are not near wifi, and they just REALLY need to have that 4mb song, AND they have about an hour to spare downloading it..
