Hang on a second, there's always an event in the middle of the year - you'd better wait until around June '08! You'll be sorry otherwise!

Seriously - it's technology. There's always something new, something better. Just sell the old on eBay and get the new, that's what I always do with Apple kit, and luckily Apple kit doesn't really lose much value as it goes along.

I usually agree and buy right away but the iPhone is SO NEW and relies on another party's service (ATT or O2). There are a few kinks. I have two friends who have iPhones and they are beautiful (a few glitches), but this is not like an iPod or iMac update. For that price you want the improvements which will come in version 2. Yes I know some will then say wait for version 3 but I still think the better iPhone will be the next one for sure. You are all testers right now.

i'm not teasing i have said it multiple times throughout this thread but there are to many people posting crap that people don't see it. I am due for an upgrade of my O2 contract and they said i could have the iphone on £35 a month with 600mins and 1000txts and unlimited data plus i pay the 269 for the iphone. She has noted it on my account. I then rang back and spoke to a guy who i asked if the previous girl has made me an offer they can honour and he said yup
I spoke to them and got some fairly useless bloke who took bloody ages to find anything and he offered me the same deal as an upgrade, and named a whole bunch of handsets. He didn't know anything at all about the iPhone. He had to look it up on their own site.

How did you get them to offer you that for the iPhone?

The funny (and sad) thing is, all of us in Canada were looking at those rates thinking "Hmmm, wow, compared to Rogers, that's pretty darned good!"

i just told them i wanted the iphone but didn't want the crappy tariff they offered and then she went on about 600mins 1000texts which i thought was about different handsets but she said iphone. I went over this several times with her on the phone and it was defo the iphone with the tariff i stated. The second guy i asked about itunes activation and he said they are doing their iphone training next week but he thinks it will be a code or a different page for existing customers that will allow me to get this seperate tariff.

yes i know, you don't get a phone included in that, but you don't with the iphone! The phone still costs 269 even though ur signing 18 months of your life away to o2.

the question is, how easy will it be to simply buy the iphone, sign up to simplicity 15 pound a month (which is a better tariff -unlimited data) and switch the sims?....

Yin and Yang

Gah!

This announcement is like meeting the perfect partner, that special someone you always knew you would find-

-and then realising it's your grandmother...

I want iPhone...but there's no 3G...but i want iPhone...and 3G...

Not very... There'll no doubt be something in the iPhone o2 sims that says "Only work with me!"

Patience folks!:eek::rolleyes:

It is always wise to wait for rev.2 for such a device anyway. If you are going to be lock into a 2 year contract you better have the best device you can get for that, period. I would not be surprise if by MWSF we will see a 16gb and 3G version. If not there by no later than March 08.

The iPhone development is happening very fast and Steve wants to sell 10 million by end of 2008, so you can bet the next revision will address most of the major issues and requests and will be a killer one.

The iPhone is fantastic, I have been very tempted to get one, but is good to wait. I am buying the iPod Touch meanwhile and then maybe selling it on eBay when the iPhone rev. 2 finally comes to life.

Haha pretty good? They're infinitely better:

Those are off peak minutes and come with no data. You really cant compare the two.

i agree about the no data, although that will probably come as a bolt-on by the time the iphone is released.

but can u tell me where you got the 'off peak' minutes bit from, i think u'll find its only on the lower simplicity tariffs, like 15pounds etc.

where are you going to buy one today...ebay? wait to get one from the apple store with receipt and applecare... and maybe a great announcement at the apple expo or at macworld

I'm in the states. I waited until the UK event thinking that they might release a 16GB version in the states. They didn't. I'm pissed. What are the chances that he'll announce 16GB next week?

Hmm. Well I just called them back and spoke to two different people, and not to rain on your parade but I think you're going to have a problem with that.

First of all, the 600/1000 tariff doesn't have unlimited data built in. Secondly, they absolutely point-blank wouldn't budge on the 'crappy tariff' - in fact they didn't actually know the details but I said to them "If you put me down for that tariff on that phone now and if, like you're saying to me, details become clearer nearer the time to my detriment, will you honour the deal?" and they said - "Well we're not making a deal with you, because it's too far away. Can't be done, sorry". I told them about your deal and both operators gasped and said "Wow - well that's not going to happen. That's a mistake. We can't do that."

Or words to that effect.

So I'm confused how you managed it but hey, I guess time will tell! Maybe you're the luckiest man in the world but something tells me it won't work out that way...

For those of you saying wait for version 2 of the iPhone you are wrong, you should wait and see what version 6 has to offer, that thing will be amazing I hear!

I must say,the iPhone is having no impact on me. I have no interest in buying one early next year when my contract is up for renewal. Will definitely go play with one when they're in stores though, and see if i get giddy.

Maybe if things change a little i might be persuaded otherwise. Perhaps a 16GB version, then i might get a little more excited. Plus, I really don't like o2, have never been impressed with them.

Oh well, my new classic and nano are on their way as i type, so they'll be keeping me entertained for a nice long time.

Hope you guys all get a good deal on it though.

Precisely why I hope that whatever Canadian carrier picks up the iPhone will offer the ability to divide the data portion of the plan out from the voice+text portion, and opt out of the data portion entirely.

I spend the vast majority of my personal time in areas where I can get WiFi for free, so I have absolutely no interest in paying for a data service that would never be used.

None, and there's no way they'd upgrade the device 2 months after it's release at MacWorld either.

Mind you... two months eh...? ;)

Nah, price drop I can see, but not a whole new device so soon.

good for you that you are in the states, when i was there i could have bought it on the 29th of June but i didn't since i moved here...

anyway.. your question had no answer unfortunately. have you seen jobs magic tricks lately? price drop after 2 months... money back.... who knows what he will announce tomorrow...

the question is: do you really want it or not? if so, buy one, but don't get pissed when something new is coming out.

I think that something has to come out before xmas, otherwise what is apple going into the xmas shopping season with? the ipods and the iphone that are going to be all 4-5 months old by then?

i'm going to wait until late november... if nothing happens i might just give up and get what is available...

Sorry, where do you see unlimited data there?

Apparently when negotiating the AT&T deal one of Apple's stipulations that they wouldn't budge on was "unlimited data" - and it's appeared in the O2 tariff as well. So, I think you're probably out of luck there.

iPhone 2....

Ok. If i buy an iPhone on nov 9th, and an update (iPhone 2 with 3g etc....) comes out say in march, surely i can just buy a new iPhone and sell the old one on ebay and still use my exisitng account and number?

Just a thought.

I for one want one - and tarriff isnt too bad as its kinda what i pay now - only cos i crank up my money on data and roaming. Its just so easy to use a phone and ipod in one. I have an 8gb nano anyway so its not a great change for me.

Kev (who had a dream last night it would be 3G!! lol!)

To everyone claiming that 3G is "just around the corner": maybe you should check out what Steve said about 3G and acceptable battery life today (from Engadget) -

"3G needs to get back up to 5+ hours, something we think well see later next year. ..."

Makes a Q1 2008 3G iPhone release look a lot less likely IMHO.
