Me as well. I also text like a school-girl so minutes is not a big deal. I also love using the net but I hate being r*ped every time I use the net. You see there is a good reason Steve Jobs is a CEO of a multi-billion dollar company and the posters on this forum are not...... he's a visionary. He knows that Wi-Fi is the way forward and not 3G. He knows that the carriers alone can't provide high speed wireless internet... if they did.... they'd do what they are doing now... letting it out in dribs and drabs and charging the earth for it..... give 1-2 years and you’ll see…… non-3G and wi-fi units will be the norm……

Spot on!

I never said you were wrong for buying an iPhone or that you shouldn't. I said it wasn't right for me, no need for you to sound in and tell me what I just said. When I said "you" I wasn't referring to you specifically. I was simply pointing out that even if someone can afford an iPhone it doesn't make it good value for money if you use your phone a lot and mobile internet isn't that important.

I think most users will use the phone aspects of the iPhone more than the contracts offer for the price. Especially in the UK where texting is huge and 200 texts is really nothing. Unless all your friends have Blackberries or iPhones then email can't replace texts.

For tech-savy, internet heavy users who rarely text or call and spend a lot of time out of WiFi range then the contracts are a good deal. However that's a very small percentile of the population and for everyone else they aren't so good, in fact they're pretty bad. Especially in N.I. where you're paying for Cloud WiFi spots you can't use.

Nobody can say that this pricing is attractive to the average consumer. It's only good for a small periphery of customers.

For what it's worth, my n73 has 3 batteries and each of them is flat after 2 days of standby.

YMMV - what I do know by now is that Apple don't go for the bleeding edge, which is what 3G essentially still is. They make bleeding edge products, they just don't seem to use bleeding edge technology.

I think this is so that they can be sure it lives up to their standards which they're known for. Sure, a lot of people are happy to trade off a short battery life or other quality issues for a 3G iPhone or a HDD iTouch, but it's just not Apple, they would usually rather wait until they can deliver the technology *and* the battery life / size / quality / etc.

To be honest, I'd be worried if they did start doing this. If they start offering options of "poorer quality/usability but more features", let's face it most people would go for those (consumers rarely understand what is best for them and instead go for the best "bang per buck" ratio), reducing demand for the higher quality/usability versions. The HQ versions would therefore get pulled off the shelf and those who buy Apple for that reason (the original niche market) would lose out. People who did buy the feature packed versions would subconsciously notice the lack of quality and substandard usability, and Apple would no longer be anything special, just another mass producer of MP3 players and computers with fancy cases.

Just my opinion/theory...

It's not our fault the Armenians have such a limited vocabulary in comparison. ;) Keep your "plan", I'll keep my "tariff". Thanks all the same.

armenians???

the thing that makes me laugh about american vocabulary/imagery is the quite large amount of posters on this forum who talk about "pulling the trigger" on a new mac. i feel like telling not to shoot expensive computers as it would be a waste!

Maybe you are right, Steve J is a visionary - We are all Armchair (or computer chair) Steve Jobs trying to critisise his strategies but he is where he is and this is where we are.

We use a skype cordless phone and if you think about it that is (VOIP) where the future lies. Our phone bills are a fraction of what they were. I can call most of the world for 2 cents a minute. The company I work for also is moving to VOIP for its domestic and international calls and I understand a lot of other businesses are moving over as well.

If I could use a touch as a Skype phone then that is what I could buy!

There is a problem here. Steve does what is best for Apple, we want what's best for us as consumers. Sometimes that's the same thing, sometimes it isn't like in this case. The best thing for consumers is for Apple not to demand money from your contract fee, it would result in better value contracts. But it means less $$$ for Apple.

None of us are "trying to be Steve Jobs", we're trying to be consumers which is what we are. We pay Apple, not the other way around. If we're not happy we have every right to complain, or "criticise Steve's strategy" and not buy the product.

The whole "how dare you question Steve/Apple" thing is just fanboy BS.

Well you did quote a specific post of mine so it's only natural that I should assume you were referring to what I said (expressing my opinion) in the absence of you making it clear that you weren't.

Furthermore, for someone who preaches ethics, it is a little anomalous to criticise me for 'sounding in'. Ethics but no right of reply or freedom of speech? Curious.

Have any existing 02 customers made any more phone calls to 02? I'm about to give them a call in the next hour or so. I was just wondering if anybody had been able to negotiate any deals. Do I need to ask specific questions about this data use? The tariff reads FREE to me but users on the forum seem to be complicating the matter.

I was offered 600mins, 1000texts and unlimited data for £35 a month with the iphone

I just called 02, spoke to 2 people and they said they don't know any prices on the iphone yet  I was advised to call back nearer November. I also asked if I could upgrade to the iphone for free or at a discounted price (I've been with 02 for years now) to which they didn't seem to know either...

Interestingly enough they've reduced the price of my plan from £30 to £15 in the meantime and that's giving me around 900 minutes 300 texts plus my 02 rollovers and other special offers that seem to show up on my online bill.

Even if you were to bolt on a data plan to £15 the iphone tariffs seem REALLY steep for what you'll be getting come November.

I'll still be getting one :)

Im in the same boat, and according to the 02 iPhone page, its fine for existing customers to switch. Im going to call 02 tmrw to make sure, but it looks like we all good!!

In which case, what's stopping people doing this?

1. Take out an 18 month O2 contract today with a free N95
2. Buy iPhone on Nov 09
3. Switch to iPhone contract
4. Sell brand new N95 on eBay for £269
5. iPhone = Free

That was my point a few pages back seamaster. Do that process and act dumb on November 9th saying you'd seen the iphone and now you need a new tariff. I just didn't want to risk the headache of it all if 02 managed to catch on.

The other thing I don't understand is that existing customers will need to activate the tariff through itunes (as jobs said in the keynote) so surely it isn't possible to negotiate a deal on the iphone tariffs anyway?

just back from the '3' shop, thought I'd go and have a look at the N95, there's no doubt this has a whole load of impressive features and the price plans are not bad, but what an ugly looking thing! I had a play with an iphone a few weeks back at the opening of the Apple store in Glasgow and was blown away by it.
it may be expensive but after today I am in no doubt what I'll be doing on Nov 9th.
there's is just no comparrison to be made!!!!

Eh? I didn't see any iPhne on the Grand Opening day except one guy brought his own. Where did you find an iPhone in the store???

By the way, yeah, I played with an iPod touch in the store yesterday and I felt so good except keyboard stuff. It may need to some learning curve.

I really hope that I can get a PAYG option with iPhone!!!!!

so the touch is in the glasgow store? will have to go in and have a look.

I find it amusing how the new samsung phone is currently a google advert on this very site.

5 MP Camera
£30 a month
400 mins
1000 texts
3G
The phones's free

I think this will sell very well :)

Argh, cool! Thx for the video clip.
Yeah, they have a one table session for iPod touch. When I went to there most people were interested to test it. The touch was so nice except the LCD problem with movies.

what was that LCD problem what do you mean? and what do you mean a one table session?

When you play a movie, a dark (black) color is inverted and you can't see it properly. Many people already reported this problem. All the touches in the store have same symptoms. I was told this problem is only for touches. Oh, this doesn't affect to animation film....

There are four big tables, which exhibit MacBook, MacBook Pro, iPod, in the ground floor. The iPod touch occupied one table and about 10(?) touches are there.

You should go and experience the multi-touch. So much fun. :D
Oh, strangely... safari loading is a bit slow even under wifi.
