It did exist. Is 30% a significant degree? It sucks.

Actually, EDGE first became available in 2003 (wikipedia):

"EDGE has been introduced into GSM networks around the world since 2003, initially in North America."

So, 5 years ago it did not exist in the UK as a usable network (and probably not even in the USA as the rollout had only just started). Unless you can find a reference that says different....

Will the phone automatically log onto a suitable wi-fi spot when it sees one? - or do you have to log it in everytime you sit in a cafe/pub/restraunt that has one?

Yes. Depends whether it is open or not. It saves passwords though for future sessions.
Further to this question/answer... The Cloud's SSID (basically a network name) is common across all their hotspots. So you should just be able to save it as a "bookmarked" hotspot on the iPhone and then whenever you walk into a Cloud hotspot, it should automatically join it.

Five-years-old technology in three months time ;) Most operators in the UK didn't bother with it (hence O2 not having it until now) because they weren't interested in it - 3G was on its way. The only reason O2 is bothering about it now is because Apple can't get their crippled phone to work with anything else. And yet all the other manufacturers seem to be able to - and still have reasonably decent battery times.

I think that's by far the worst deal on a phone I've ever seen..

£35 a month for 200 voice minutes and 200 text messages? AND you have to pay a stupid ammount for the phone?

I think I'll get one from the US for £200 and unlock it.

So does anyone know if in the UK we get...

Push e-mail?

Will the phone automatically log onto a suitable wi-fi spot when it sees one? - or do you have to log it in everytime you sit in a cafe/pub/restraunt that has one?

Will o2 be supporting all the features of AT&T's service, push e-mail, 3 way calling, visual voicemail, rollover minutes, etc

Anyone know the answers to the above, id like to know if we're missing out on anything the US users get - and rollover minutes would be quite useful.

It seamlessly switches which means you enter the details once (if needed) and the iPhone does the rest from there on

O2 currently supports 3 way calling and will support visual voicemail and free voicemail. However no one know for sure if the minutes will rollover as nothing has been said officially to confirm nor deny that.

Yahoo Push 3 email was not mentioned in the keynote so no official word on that either....maybe The Cloud freebie will be replacing the Yahoo Push freebie

Give me 3 months dude...

no apple product is a bargain!
cheapest imac in the UK is £799, you get what you pay for.

I still think the cheapest iMac and the MacBooks are a bargain. Look at what you get. It does everything I want it to [MacBook].

PLUS the unlimited data. Plus free Wifi at 7,500 hotspots.

Right now on the O2 website:

"Browsing 20MB gives you 20MB of data for £10"

So whether its a rip off or not depends on your usage. £10 for a measly 20MB is the absolute best you can get on O2 right now. So £35 for unlimited plus the 200/200 isnt worthless.

If you need data, clearly its a decent deal. Really only T-Mobile have better deals for unlimited data. If you don't need data, then perhaps the iPhone isnt for you anyway.

Either way if you buy it from the States and unlock it, you are still going to need a data plan if you intend to use Mail, Safari, Google Maps etc when you are not in the vicinity of a wifi access point.

If someone was to buy an iPhone and enter the 18month contract, and then apple were to introduce a new iphone come macworld or whatever, surly upgrading the phone be just as simple as paying the £269 purchase price of the new phone, since you already have an iPhone contract.

I think that would be the easiest way for O2/Apple/ATT to offer upgrades. Maybe they could include that when you activate the new iPhone with your existing contract, that you enter a new contract for another 18months, ensuring you are stuck with an iPhone for at least 18months since buying one.

EDIT: Does adding an already activated iPhone ATT sim into a pre-activated iPhone activate it ?

PLUS the unlimited data. Plus free Wifi at 7,500 hotspots.
But from 1st October, it's going to be unlimited data included for all. A Cloud Wifi subscription is £6.99. O2 could get that down to £5 since they are a Cloud partner. A decent tariff with plenty of minutes and texts on O2 comes in at between £20-£25. So the entry level iPhone package should be closer to £30/month.

I think the suggestion was no, there isn't going to be a charge. There is already an inclusive allowance with all O2 pay monthly tariffs - 512KB for store-bought, 1MB for online. They said unlimited was going to be rolled out to all customers. Maybe I've read that wrong though and there will be a charge... Guess we'll find out in a few days.

I dont think it will be free. In fact, I will be astounded if free unlimited data is given to all customers. I read it as all customers will have access to that unlimited data

I'm more than a little concerned that the EDGE coverage will only be 30% by launch date. Hardly impressive!

Furthermore what incentive do o2 have to plough further money into expanding the operation of this outdated technology on their network when they know very well that this iPhone will be replaced by a 3G model quite soon, possibly in the first quarter of 2008 which is only a few months off?

Are they fobbing us off in the short term with a second class service that doesn't even have an acceptable area of coverage?

They won't let you do this.

You seem to get only positive news on pricing eenu. I do find it difficult to believe that o2 will do anything for free.

Have you checked today whether your deal is holding up?

Yes and i've had the 4th confirmation. Maybe its because i spend a lot of money on O2 who knows i've been offered it, promised it and told by a supervisor that if they try and so no in november to get them to contact her and she will tell them to authorise it

how many other manufacturers make phones with a 3.5 inch screen?!

Yeah i think its a £10 option for unlimited data....which isn't bad. If you have a simplicity tariff from O2 with 600 mins/1000 texts/free vmail/ITS with an option for Long weekend texts/talk at £25 and add £10 for unlimited data that comes to £35. Plus £200 ish for an imported iPhone...???

Sounds about good to me. Cloud or no Cloud and you pay per month not an 18 month lockdown.

Where did you get £10 from? O2's site hasn't been updated with the new data information yet, and AFAIK, charges were not mentioned at the Apple conference.

Educated guess using this hence the word "think". If they're gonna seriously compete with T-Mobile's 300MB/£7.50 plan or other carrier offerings, they need something good.

£10 for unlimited data subject to fair use (1400 pages yada yada) would be a good way to go. However, we will see what happens
