Just exactly how do you know that? Just because that was the switch from iPhone 3G to 3GS?

We know because that's how Apple works. They are not coming out this year with the end all iphone. But if you really want to know how aggressive they are going to be in 2011, let's see how much better the iPad is. That will tell us all we need to know. If it's the best ever, with all the rumored specs than we can expect a brand new i5, if it's just a camera and speed/memory bump, than we are getting i4s

sure ... and they will also bring the Kin back to the market

Speculation of Alliance With Microsoft Lifts Nokia Shares

BERLIN — Shares of Nokia, the mobile phone market leader, climbed for a fourth day on Thursday amid speculation that the company may be poised to announce a software alliance with Microsoft designed to revive its struggling U.S. smartphone business.

I just made your comment my profile status. This is the best I've ever heard it put. "a lack of consistency". Thank you! Perfect phrasing! :D

So, you think Apple is just going to stay still while Google is working on a better Android OS?

Not me

I wonder how many At&t iPhone users switch just because of the hype after so many years. Apple does make things into some sort of big and magical event.

This is one AT&T iPhone user who will NOT be switching, and it has nothing to do with early termination, etc. Pleased with my phone and my service, so why bother?

They both need it.... neither one seem to be making it work in the smart phone market - Nokia does very well in the feature phone market. But will 0+0=1 or 0+0=0????

Then you need the sales figures from all iPod touches, iPads and iPhones.

Either compare OS to OS or handset to handset, can't have it both ways.

But then it would be hard to uselessly flame an iphone post.

Good point and agreed...you have to do some logical backflips to undermine iPhone/iOS's clear success. Not that they are remotely comprable considering until now iPhone hit it out of the park ON ONE CARRIER!

Sorry but I've seen this all over the place today and it's just the must ridiculous statement I've seen for some time. By that token no-one would EVER buy an Android handset (for example) as even the biggest, baddest, shiniest bit of kit on the block tends to be replaced at the top of the tree within 6 months, more normally 3. Anyone that bought a Nexus S when it came out on the 16th of December is going to find themselves with last-gen hardware in the next couple of weeks when the dual-core phones start to hit. More to the point, if Apple follow their usual plan, the iPhone 4 will just become the 'cheap' phone in their range so you'll still have a current handset for 18 months, how many manufacturers can say that?

Buy an iPhone now if you want one. The next gen won't be vastly different, faster internals maybe but that's about it. Buy it if it's what you want NOW, if it isn't then hang on. Rule number one of the tech world.

Agreed. No technology is really future-proof. There always be something newer around the corner.

Yeah, I agree. Whatever the number, I'm sure it was good. I had to look up the numbers too, I think we'll only know for sure later.
:)

I was going by memory so I was probably wrong, although analysts tend to be way off, too. Still I think selling 1 million in less than a day seems unlikely. It is such a milestone figure that if it was reached it probably would have been something they would tout.

Sigh

Speaking as smartphone admin for a large multinational conglomerate I'll be happy this rolls out successfully because all I heard for two years is "when will the iPhone be available on Verizon?" like I had some kind of inside line on the whims of corporate america.

Really? Designed to reward their customers for their loyalty? Not to reward your company with smoother pre-order and delivery not to mentioned extended contracts and untold sums of cash? I think they're on to something.

They didn't have to have a pre-order for their current customers. They could have just had a big free for all. I think that extending it to current customers first was a nice touch.

So how do Windows Mobile 7 sales numbers (to customers) compare to this?

Apparently, 40,000 WP7 phones were sold in the US on launch day (Nov 8), and about 400,000 more (US only) till Dec 31, 2010. Quite a few of the 400,000 WP7 phones went over the counter as part of promotions (buy 1 WP7 phone, get 1 free, or bundled with a "free" Xbox). Rumor also goes that MSFT spent about US$ 500 million (worldwide) on promoting WP7, i.e. several hundred US$ per phone sold to customers.

Time for a re-run Steve Balmer's visionary assessment of the iPhone in 2007:

"$500? ... that is the most expensive phone in the world... and it doesn't have a keyboard... I like our strategy a lot.... right now we sell millions and millions of phones, and Apple sells zero..." ;)

vz - with all the profit you're gonna make from the great iP4 you should -
1) build out FIOS in my area
2) create more iP4 bandwidth
3) lower your iP4 contract prices and really kick att to the curb

I'm comparing launches of OSes

Phones using the Android OS vs. The phone using iOS

I think its quite relevant; just like the comparison of computers sold with OS X vs. Windows is.

Except it's not relevant to this thread.

Based on sales numbers I've heard and the fact that Verizon needs to sell more to new customers than existing, I'd estimate initial pre-sales at between 100k and 250k. Most of the phones need to be available for the converts on Feb 10.

Somebody find out what the last fastest launch was of Verizon and you'll have a good estimate.

My guess is that it was the first Droid. In any case, they said they sold more in the first 2 hours than their next-best phone sold in the first day.

... and this is with hardware that is essentially 8 months old... quite incredible actually.

Good news for Apple Stock Owners.

Sales record for Verizon....hmmm.....was it because most customers bought 2 (one for data, one for voice)?

Media spin

By the way, Verizon DID NOT SELL OUT. They are holding back most of their stockpile for Feb 10.....new customers are worth more than existing ones. In Verizon's eyes, existing customers are "chumps" who can wait a bit longer. If I was an existing customer, I'd be furious....to wait for a number of years only to see the new customers jump ahead in line.

Android probably sold 9 billion when u combine all devices on initial launch.

Ooh that's funny.

Might I link you to some facts that make that figure incredibly hillarious, namely the population of the earth:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

There would have to be approximately 1.3 Android devices for each human being in existence for this to be true.

Now I know you were just pulling a random large number from your ass to drive home a point. But next time, do your homework and try to overstate the number by a few million, not by 142 times. because the best figure I could find are that there may be 63 million android devices out there right now. And that's not even a figure for launch day(s) that's total sold since android hit the market.
