Agreed.

For me this the most curious part.

At a guess I'd (assume) it'll be:

- Plastic 'all-in-one' shell (cheaper materials, and cheaper to make)
- Single LED flash
- Current-gen camera (i.e the iPhone 4 and 5 one)
- 16GB storage
- Current gen SoC

Essentially think of it as the iPhone 4, but built cheaper. Thats the 'slot' it will be taking. We'll still have the three-phone lineup (e.g at the moment we have 4, 4 and 5). The difference is that Apple will reduce the current fragmentation across ports and resolutions by doing this, instead of just reducing the 4 cost.

I hope it happens on Sept 10 - but either way, looking at the current rumours for the iPhone - It looks like a very dull update with nothing much to get too excited about.

I think I'll keep my old 4 and wait another year for the 6.

I can't stand the crappy finish on the current 5 and don't get me started on those terrible plastic bits on the back - In fact the rumoured cheap plastic one looks much nicer to me!

Whenever he has said yep/nope, he's been always been right.

yeah, because if he actually gives a real rumor instead of confirming others then he gets them wrong. IMO he knows just as much as the rest of them, just plays the game better.

Im calling it here:

It will have a pointless processor upgrade. The phone is already fast enough.
Dual LED - for those who care (could be ok)
12 MP Camera
Some proprietary hardware sensor that only the 5S will have (Finger print?)
Same screen, but they will boast that is has a higher contrast ratio "more colors".

Thats about it. Slight upgrade from the 5 realistically, and next year will be a larger phone.

Don't forget... it'll have "the most beautiful display in an iPhone ever released", it'll be the "most magical phone we've ever imagined and delivered" and it will bring you "the most joy ever possible in the thinnest phone we've ever released" ;)

Sorry, but your opinion is wrong. He has connections within apple. When he says yep or nope, Apple told him. They use him as a way to confirm or deny rumors while being indirect. He is explicitly choosing not to play the rumor game. This isn't to say he is above speculation--he will enter Apple Fan Mode all the time on his podcast.

But when he says yep or nope, he's basically an unofficial Apple spokesman.

Sell it while the word has not spread yet on eBay and you could get back most of what you have paid ;)

You may want to wait a little longer. Apple will announce iPhone 5S on September 10th but it looks like they may not start selling it right away. According to this news article on Digitimes, Apple (TSMC) is experiencing yield issues with finger print sensor chip. Quote: "Production of Apple's next iPhone, commonly referred to be the iPhone 5S and is scheduled to be unveiled on September 10, could reach only 3-4 million units in the third quarter of 2013 compared to 10 million units as originally planned due to a delay in production of fingerprint sensors needed for the iPhone 5S"

Couldn't agree more. And boy, is he an Apple fan boy. Sometimes it's hard to listen to his podcast because it's so one sided.

His rationalization as to why the Nexus 7 form factor was bad but then months later how the iPad Mini is the almost perfect device borders on the insane :D

surprise us?

I still think they might surprise us with a larger screen iPhone. People have been asking for it for a while, I just think they have doubled down on secrecy, and they are being extra careful not to show their cards ahead of time to manage the hype to maximize sales when it does happen.

I think the larger screen would be seriously considered by Apple, IF they could keep the overall device size down.

Like this 5S concept video.

The concerns people express about the larger screen idea is that the device ends up huge, like a phablet.
But if Apple could get that 4.7" screen in a device smaller and lighter than the iPhone 5, wow... that would satisfy everyone, and seriously beat the competition.

But how could Apple do that? Serious innovation in packing all the electronics, and the battery, into a smaller space. Have they got that sort of innovation?

iPhone Media Event All But Confirmed for September 10

Yes it's everything but the most important thing. Confirmed by the mouth of Apple. It's still 100% rumour till Apple confirm it. The Analysts can squawk as much as they want. But they cant change the facts.

Only Apple can confirm anything.
Analysts can only speculate.

As usual a nice rumour article. But I'll wait for Apple to confirm this (if the rumours are correct).

Jim Dalrymple isn't an analyst.

And AllThingsD also isn't an analyst firm either.

Wish they would go with the following names:

- iPhone
- iPhone PRO

Would align with their MacBook line and I think it sounds better. They don't come out with MacBook 8 or 8s.

No because theres nothing that an 'iPhone Pro' would do that would serve professionals and not consumers.

The macbook pros were labelled 'pro' machines because of their graphics card - allowed photo editors and video editors to work remotely.

I suspect, soon, the differentiator will be retina display.

on the iPhone? different set of products

Yeah, it's really the same story always with new iPhones. Well, I have it covered :) It means I will use a spare Lumia 520 until the new iPhone :)

Do they both currently work for Apple? Are they both quoting Apple's words with a source (they are willing to name) who said such things?
No and No.

"citing sources with knowledge of X".
Every second rumour claims to have this.

"Dalrymple is well connected at Apple and has on many occasions either confirmed or refuted other reports and rumors in simple one-word posts with 100% accuracy"
Get some right and get some wrong. Guess enough dates and eventually you get some right. And many occasions is not 100%. All occasions is 100%.

"Such reports are generally taken as coming directly from Apple but delivered through an unofficial channel."
Only if you think rumours are fact. I will wait for Apple to confirm it.
