Yeah, like the 6.1" phone is suddenly going to be a good size when it was never small enough before.

Agreed, but: what else are you supposed to do if you want a new phone and no one sells a smaller one? Of course I'll consider the regular 6.1 as an option.

Just my tuppenny's worth - it's a just a phone. Long live minimalisation and less intrusion. Apple, please go even further with a small phone and release the Apple Watch from its iPhone shackle.

PS. iPhone 12 mini owner

Those freaking camera bumps make me want to puke, that is the one piece I just cannot stand on the iPhone. I am ok with making the device thicker if it means reducing that fatty back there.

Interesting, I've had my 13 mini almost 5 months and my battery health is still at 100%.
If you're on a Mac check out this free application called "Coconut Battery". It will show your device's battery health, cycle count and a lot of other interesting information. The low mAh of the 13 battery results in more charge cycles in a shorter span of time. Each cycle fatigue the battery chemistry and ultimately, with enough cycles, degrades it to an sluggish or unusable % (anything under 80% or ~650 cycles). We stypically see around 175-300 cycles per year dependent on use.

Interesting, I've had my 13 mini almost 5 months and my battery health is still at 100%.
Mine dropped to 99% about a month or two ago, and tumbled down to 93% in the last month. I'm waiting to see what happens September 7th, and then either getting an iPhone 14 mini, or getting a replacement 13 mini since mine is dinged up and needs a new battery.

Don't worry Mini fans. you can still annoy us all by posting in every comment section on how much you and your wife loves iphone 13 mini 🫶
Thank you, I will! ;)

I had Iphone 13pro and chose to downgrade to 13 mini, I can't go back to that size and weight. I will absolutely not do an SE .

Really if in 3 years Apple didn't release an update I'm using my 13 mini until it dies and then switches to another brand
It's madness what Apple is doing with their size and weight, they forgot it's a phone not a tablet.
I went the opposite direction, but not by choice. I stupidly broke my 12 mini and needed a replacement. It was a company issued phone and they stopped offering mini's. Went with the 13 Pro and I feel like I have a brick in my pocket. Miss my mini so much!

...OR just don't buy the new phones I don't even want. That's an option too.

Mini 13 was going to be my last iPhone anyway - next upgrade is either a Pixel with CylaxOS loaded up, or something like the Light Phone.

With no iPhone 14 mini expected to feature in Apple's upcoming iPhone 14 series lineup this September, we look at the best possible alternative iPhone options for those who prefer smaller form factor devices.

iPhone-mini-wonder-feature-yellow.jpg

iPhone sizes are changing this year, and Apple is widely believed to be eliminating the 5.4-inch iPhone mini from the iPhone 14 lineup, as the iPhone 13 mini was not popular enough with customers. That leaves fans of the smaller devices who are looking for a new iPhone with a purchase dilemma. So what are your options likely to be?

Consider the Next iPhone 14 Size Up

If you're considering buying an iPhone 14 in lieu of a "mini" device, here's what you need to know. Apple is focusing on larger iPhone sizes for its flagship devices going forward, and this year we're expecting to see a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max, and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. That means there will be non-Pro and Pro variants of both phone sizes, something Apple hasn't done before.

As far as the upcoming iPhone series goes, users who prefer the dimensions of a 5.4-inch iPhone mini are unlikely to jump to the 6.7-inch models, which leaves either the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 or the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro as potential alternatives.

6.1-inch iPhone 14 Design Changes

Design-wise, the two 6.1-inch models will look different to each other, with the non-Pro model retaining the notch that houses the Face ID components on the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini.

In contrast, the Pro models are expected to feature a circular hole-punch cutout for the camera paired with a pill-shaped cutout to house the Face ID components.

With new camera technology expected to feature, the camera bumps for the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro could also get thicker, with the Pro's bump growing in size more notably. Aside from that, there are no other major design changes expected for the 2022 iPhone models when compared to iPhone Mini models.

6.1-inch iPhone 14 Hardware Features

Apple is further differentiating its non-Pro and Pro model iPhones this year, therefore many of the headlining features of its 6.1-inch devices are likely to be exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro model, which is going to make it more expensive.

With Apple looking to cut costs, rumors suggest non-Pro iPhone 14 models are likely to continue to use the same A15 chip that was introduced in the iPhone 13 series, while the iPhone 14 Pro models will receive an updated A16 chip.

The other Pro features expected include an always-on display mode, a triple-lens camera system with a 48-megapixel Wide camera and a seven-element telephoto lens.

With the iPhone 13 Pro models, Apple introduced an improved six-element Ultra Wide lens with an improved ƒ/1.8 aperture, with these improvements expected to come to the dual-lens systems on the standard iPhone 14 models.

Otherwise, all of the iPhone 14 models coming this year are expected to feature an upgraded front camera with a wider ƒ/1.9 aperture and autofocus capabilities.

The iPhone 14 is expected to be priced starting at $799, which is the starting price for the iPhone 13. For more details, be sure to check out our dedicated iPhone 14 roundup.

The iPhone 13 Mini May Yet Stick Around

While there's no evidence pointing once way or the other, Apple could conceivably continue to offer the iPhone 13 mini alongside the iPhone 14 series when it launches.

iphone-12.jpg

Apple still offers 2020's iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini alongside the latest iPhone 13 series, so it could well do the same and continue to sell the iPhone 13 mini at a reduced price when the new flagship devices go live.

Keep an Eye on Apple's Refurb Store

Apple in July began selling certified refurbished iPhone 12 mini devices for the first time since the device was released in October 2020. While Apple's refurb store doesn't currently have the model in stock and its successor has yet to be listed, the long wait between launch and refurb availability suggests that Apple could yet begin selling iPhone 13 mini models on the site, or perhaps re-stock iPhone 12 mini models.

refurb-store-iphone.jpg

If you're in the market for an iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 13 mini, it's worth keeping tabs on the refurb store shortly after Apple launches the iPhone 14 series, as Apple often reshuffles the site with new stock in the following weeks.

Refurbished iPhones come unlocked and SIM-free. All refurbished iPhones come with a new battery, a new outer shell, and a new white box that includes all manuals and a USB-C to Lightning cable. All refurbished iPhones are covered by Apple's standard one-year warranty and are eligible for extended AppleCare+ coverage.

Apple says its refurbished iPhones are thoroughly tested and cleaned, and in our view, they are virtually indistinguishable from brand new iPhones. One of the only notable differences with a certified refurbished iPhone is that it comes in a plainer box.

Consider the iPhone SE 2022

Announced in March, the third-generation iPhone SE is Apple's most inexpensive iPhone starting at $429, and also the smallest device Apple still sells. Compared to Apple's flagship models, however, there are design differences to be aware of.

iphone-se-durability.jpg

As it is modeled after the iPhone 8 and prior iPhone SE, the 2022 iPhone SE continues to feature thick top and bottom display bezels. The iPhone SE is also Apple's only iPhone that comes with a Touch ID Home button, as all other iPhones now feature Face ID.

The iPhone SE features a 4.7-inch Retina HD LCD display, with True Tone to match the ambient lighting in a room, Wide color, Dolby Vision, and HDR10. It is also powered by an A15 chip and includes 5G connectivity.

To keep costs low, the iPhone SE has a single-lens 12-megapixel rear camera, featuring an ƒ/1.8 aperture with optical image stabilization, wide color capture, Deep Fusion for improved textures, and Smart HDR 4 for improved highlights and shadow details.

The 7-megapixel front-facing camera features an ƒ/2.2 aperture with Portrait mode and Depth Control support despite the lack of a TrueDepth camera system. For more details, check out our dedicated iPhone SE roundup.

Wait for the Next-Generation iPhone SE

Apple is planning to release a fourth-generation iPhone SE with a larger 5.7-inch display as early as 2023, according to display industry consultant Ross Young, who has proven to be a reliable source of information for future Apple products.

It's not yet clear if such a model would retain the Home button and top and bottom bezels or adopt a notched screen with Face ID, but a 5.7-inch display would seem to put it closer to the dimensions of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini, so it may be worth holding out for.

Kind of a very silly article.

There is NOTHING to look forward to for us iPhone 12/13 mini owners/users. nothing in Apple's lineup comes close nor has since the iPhone 5S or OG SE back in 2016!!

RIP! iPhone Mini will be missed.

I remember when Apple was so excited when they first announced iPhone Mini. It's too bad it did not live up to the hype.

Apple wasn't really excited at all.

case in point:
1. show me where on any of Apple's international sites that show the mini completely on it's own and without first selecting the regular iPhone first?
2. Apple has never advertised the iPhone mini online/print/video - not 1x not even on billboards in N.America. I'm willing to bet globally as well.
3. Tim Cook has ONLY 1x mentioned iPhone mini (13 mini) on twitter and that was due to picture contest in India. That was over 4mths ago.

Apple wasn't happy at all, I was, the lady that introduced the 12 mini was excited, fans and tubers alike where, but not Apple.

I absolutely love my 12 Mini. I'd like to pounce on a 13 Mini before it's too late or they're harder to find just so I can hang on to the form factor as long as possible.

But, I haven't done a model switcheroo in a long time and don't know what happens to the availability of discontinued models. Can someone help me figure out what would be the best route? Is it:

1. Look for carrier deals, such as incentives to switch from T-Mobile to Verizon, and do so ASAP (I don't use much data, so cell service isn't a big concern)?
2. Cross fingers for an unlocked 13 to be on sale at a lower price after 9/7?
3. Go buy a 13 Mini now no matter what?

I think Apple did it for the consumers. But didn't know it would end like this?

If the iPhone 13 Mini gets a price cut, I may consider replacing my iPhone 12 Mini with it, if anything to get a fresh battery.

With trade-in offers it may end up being very little out of pocket as well.

The big question is whether I want to stick with blue or get green instead. Wish the purple color from the iPhone 12 was offered.
Would you look into trade-in offers right now, or after 9/7 (or whenever the 14s are released)? I'm new to the trade-in process and want to time this right so I don't either pay full price or miss out entirely.

I am hopeful the iPhone 15 (with USB comes in mini). I am ready for a smaller device after years of the larger screens.

I think Apple messed up this delivery. The 12 mini battery was so bad that it turned people off for the 13 mini. The 13 mini is an exponentially better device but people were afraid to take another chance on it.

iPhone Technician here.. we have seen an uptick in battery related issues with the 12 & 13 mini. Due to the small foot print od the mini's battery, it requires charging more frequently with normal use from an average user. Our clients in sales can not use the mini for work calls. The iPhone 12 Mini's battery cycle count is already beyond it's usable lifespan (~500 cycles) which is unusual for 2 yeara. The 13 mini's battery is better, but we see battery health degrading faster than the their low cost predecessors (SE 2020, SE 2022, iPhone Xr & iPhone 11)
Great point that I hadn't thought about.

Are we expecting significant updates to the iPhone 14 in general? Sounds like a slightly modified A15 SoC? I get the feeling that the 13 mini wouldn’t have been much different from what a 14 mini could have offered.

I bet the 13 mini sticks around for that size class / lower price point, and eventually is replaced by a refreshed SE that takes on its design in spring 2024.

This is very accurate. Having had both, I wish that more people would have given the 13 mini a second chance. It basically fixed all of the concerns anybody might have had with the 12 mini.

The main reason I'd want a 14 mini would be for the Qualcomm X65 modem. Each generation is adding an additional aggregated NR carrier. The X55 in the 12 only supports 1 NR carrier, the X60 supports 2xCA, the X65 supports 3xCA, and the X70 (presumably coming with next year's iPhones) will support 4xCA.

As more networks prepare to transition to standalone mode, this will become vitally important for them to retain the performance that they have with LTE. Especially providers like AT&T, who have a variety of small fragmented spectrum allocations.

The mini line has been on the chopping block since Apple saw the growth of larger phones a few years ago! Still surprising that it's being considered as there is a market for smaller footprint iPhones

I wouldn't mind going with the smaller iPhone 14 Pro if it weren't for the weight. Would love 120Hz display on a mini sized iPhone. But the iPhone 13 Pro is roughly 50% heavier the iPhone 13 mini!
