You seem to be contradicting yourself, as your first paragraph implies mini sells well, while the second that it does not?
I’m not disputing that the sales numbers were low. I’m saying that I think the sales came from people who would typically spend more on a phone.

I’m just speculating, but I think that more people downsized from “standard” sized (X/XS/XR/11/11Pro) phones than upsized from smaller/cheaper (8/SE1/SE2) iPhones.

iPhone Technician here.. we have seen an uptick in battery related issues with the 12 & 13 mini. Due to the small foot print od the mini's battery, it requires charging more frequently with normal use from an average user. Our clients in sales can not use the mini for work calls. The iPhone 12 Mini's battery cycle count is already beyond it's usable lifespan (~500 cycles) which is unusual for 2 yeara. The 13 mini's battery is better, but we see battery health degrading faster than the their low cost predecessors (SE 2020, SE 2022, iPhone Xr & iPhone 11)
13 Mini owner for almost a year here. Usually have between 30-35% charge left every day when putting on charger at night. Still at 100% capacity with battery health.

I wouldn't mind going with the smaller iPhone 14 Pro if it weren't for the weight. Would love 120Hz display on a mini sized iPhone. But the iPhone 13 Pro is roughly 50% heavier the iPhone 13 mini!
120hz is the only reason I went from 12 mini to 13 Pro. I miss the mini size dearly, but I don’t think I could ever switch back until the display is upgraded to 120hz (which I doubt will ever happen).

Well, FWIW, my iPhone history was iPhone 7 > iPhone 11 > iPhone 12 mini. So I also downsized from 11 to 12 mini and could not be happier, as I could use my phone with one hand again and barely notice it in my pockets. 11 was a brick in comparison, so it was ok for me to trade off some battery life. Money-wise, I did pay more for mini than 11, but then again, I was getting everything a regular 6.1” had in a smaller package.

... It's madness what Apple is doing with their size and weight, they forgot it's a phone not a tablet.
Keeping in mind of course that the Android market went there long before Apple did, and almost all Android flagships are phablets these days, too.

The real difference is, Apple is only a single vendor, whereas there are dozens of Android vendors. Mind you, not that I am in any way an advocate of Android... but in all fairness, it's still very possible to find a variety of options in the Android market that Apple simply can't/won't match. As weird as this might sound, you can even still find phones with old-school chicklet keyboards, if that's your thing.

Apple has had a really good run with small phones; that's where they started, after all, so it makes sense that there would still be quite a few small iPhone fans around. But unfortunately, that's just not where the profits are.

I went from 11 Pro to 12 mini, and then back to 13 Pro for 120hz.

I wasn’t doubting anything about people liking the mini phones. I’d definitely describe the 12 mini as my “favorite” iPhone ever. The size is perfect for me.

If the 5.7" phone has camera that performs better in low light and has USB-C I'll jump to that other wise i will hold on to my SE2.

14 Pro vs 13 mini. I'm torn.

I think the 14 Pro is going to be heavier than my XR which is not a selling point.
I would like a smaller phone and it will be cheaper on the secondary market at a minimum, probably $100 off if they keep it as the default small phone.

Either way I'm ready for a new iPhone.

I was really close to buying the 13 Mini when upgrading my 8 Plus, but in the end the superior battery of the 13 Pro Max and ProMotion won the bet (i had some issues with the 8 Plus in that front and wanted something substantially better). My only regrets were the awful night photos with extreme processing and the weight, but otherwise, its a great phone.

In any case, 13 Mini surprised me, coming from an 8 Plus the screen seemed bigger, like deleting the bezels from my phone and resulting in a compact form factor. I would gladly upgrade this to a Mini "Pro" phone in the future.

I think Apple messed up this delivery. The 12 mini battery was so bad that it turned people off for the 13 mini. The 13 mini is an exponentially better device but people were afraid to take another chance on it.
And don't forget they announced the 12 mini right after releasing the SE2, so anyone who was waiting for a small phone had already given up and purchased the SE2.

I don’t think they’re discontinuing it simply due to poor sales. I think they’re discontinuing it because it cannibalized sales from higher end models.

No, they are discontinuing it because of poor sales.

I offer as proof Speck cases. Speck offered the same style cases for the iPhone 12 mini as they did for every other iPhone 12 design. For the iPhone 13 mini they dramatically scaled back to a few clear cases and that's it.

If the iPhone mini sold as well as the other iPhone designs they wouldn't have scaled back.

I offer the Pixel 6 as additional proof. Speck offered cases for the Pixel 2 through Pixel 5. But they did not offer any case for the Pixel 6. The only conclusion I can draw is that the sales volume just isn't there.

This is a terrible option next to the Mini 12 or 13. Larger device with a smaller (and worse) screen, much worse camera, slower processor. The only way this makes sense is if you want to save money or you really hate FaceID.

Or you really can't stand the size of a 6.1" phone.

I should have been more clear. I know it didn’t sell well. I’m saying that’s not the reason they’re discontinuing it.

I’m saying that for the people who DID buy it, they bought it as an alternative to a more expensive iPhone, on average. And again, I’m just speculating based on my own experience and others I know.
