Waste of manufacturing resources that could go to the most popular sizes. Problem with the mini is the screen is too small, battery life is bad, doesn't get all the latest cameras or largest storage capacities.

It's an iPhone with way too many compromises and this is why it's not a great seller. A minority might love it but the majority has spoken, people want larger phones.
The iPhone 13 mini has the same core specs, chip, and the same camera system as the 13, and by extension, the 14 too. Battery life is only 2 hours shorter than the 13. Compromised in what way? The form factor only makes it more attractive visually, on top of the greater maneuverability, and I agree with the assessment that it’s actually a engineering feat.

I'm a small phone lover and always hated the trend about phones keep getting bigger each year, but there was one trick I did last year that worked perfectly for me to break free from the minority. I forced myself to use the Pro Max for a year, and then the Pro feels small enough to me now. So for the next iPhone, I'll just pick the Pro and won't complain about its big size anymore. I'm breaking freeee from the minority!

It’s a trick. But a pretty expensive one. And still. My wife has the 11 Pro and I cannot make it fit comfortably in my pocket.

Maybe I just need this to carry my phone around?

My last iPhone for the foreseeable future, I have 2 13 minis (one I use solely for music) I won’t buy another large screen phone any time soon. I’d sooner go with a flip phone tbh but that’s just me, thankfully the 13 mini should last a good long time

The solution is pretty straightforward. The EU will eventually force Apple to make iOS open, so that other manufacturers can sell iOS phones. The change to USB C was just the first shot by the EU Commission, plus the recent privacy mandates, so in the long run Apple are going to have to open up iOS, it's pretty obvious. We shall then see all kinds of innovative iOS phones that make Apple's current offerings look like dinosaurs (which they are as regards hardware). The best Android phones are all Chinese, they are the only ones innovating nowadays, so roll on Chinese iOS phones!

Hope the iPhone mini becomes like the McRib - they make a mini version every few years for the fans but don't invest in making a new one every year. There is a small but very loyal fan base of people that want a small phone, and people just aren't getting a new phone every year. Yes, the 13 mini was only 3% of the share for that year, but the 12 mini was like 6% as I recall. That's still a TON of revenue Apple wouldn't want to leave on the table. I mean, literally all macs see those kinds of numbers and they still make those.

And thus with the new chip built on a 3 nanometer process, all the more reason an iPhone 15 mini would prove to be a success. The chips will be about 30% more efficient and thus the existing form factor and its battery will be sufficient. There is certainly enough of a demographic population that will consume the smaller form factors (iPhone Mini and/or a smaller 12" MacBook). The key here is the new efficient chips will require less power, thus utilizing the existing battery size. Apple can't release everything at once. It will come because there is a market for the smaller form factors. I think right now it is about getting through the manufacturing location transitions (China, Vietnam, India) and sustaining the most popular builds (MBA, MBP, iPhone Pro), as they can't introduce new products until more manufacturing lines are built and stabilized. Mark my words, you heard it here first!:)

Maybe the research firm CIRP should have asked customers if there were interested in an entry-level smaller phone...

Those interested in smaller phones are not people willing to spend a lot of money. I'm interested in smaller phones, but I don't need/want the latest and greatest.

That's Apple's mistake imo. Should Apple had released a newly designed iPhone SE Mini, things would probably have been different. May or may not be wrong.

Apple making iPhone bigger each year, yet I didn't read any study that mentions people's hand are getting larger as well.
At some point the resulting form factor loses its appeal.

iPhone Mini lovers just want a device that you can use with 1 hand.
Seems like a reasonable demand to me.
It's not a "reasonable demand" to ask for more minis when both Apple and third party retailers have been struggling since iPhone 12 to part with mini inventory and have to do deep discounts to get rid of minis.

Yes, minis are seemingly very popular here on MR and within certain demographics. Sure, pat each other on the back.

But you do not represent the 16-34 age group mainstream consumer, aka the most hardcore social media addicts roaming our Earth in 2023, which is Apple's target demographic.

Batteries and display cannot(!) be big enough for the iPhone's target demographic. Doesn't matter how light and pocketable the mini is if it can't handle the almost endless hours of TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, reddit, Facebook, Instagram doom-scrolling that the average 16-34 year old does in a day.

The McRib.....that's accurate and hilarious!

I am still using my 12 mini and will not upgrade till there is a new mini. Maybe the next iPhone SE will be the mini with a new chip.
I recommend upgrading to a 13 mini then... buy one on discount and sit on it until your 12 mini dies.

If this is the end for minis, I'm planning on using my 13 mini til death, and also buying a backup 13 mini whenever they announce they are gonna stop selling them.

Making them smaller does not make them cheaper, the metal housing and glass is just a very small portion of the cost.
I some cases making a equally powerful phone smaller can be more expensive.
Agreed. They would have to be made from less expensive components

Wishful thinking, but both the mini products (iPhone, iPad) would benefit immensely from the new 3nm processor architecture and the battery life benefits. Because the iPad mini is still on the A-series processor, it would be cool to see it and the iPhone mini get this processor bump either this year or next year. As others have said, we are a vocal minority, and putting out an update every 2-3 years may make perfect sense.
