I know this is a crazy idea, but let's say they replaced the SE with the Mini form factor to update it, but removed the notch/faceID and put Touch ID in the power button like on the iPad and iPad mini.

That would be wild!

Edit: also, RIP selfies I guess lol

USB-C alone means they can't use the 13 mini chassis unchanged.
The 2022 iPad Air is 6.1mm thin, more than 1mm thinner than the iPhone 13 mini. The iPad Air has a USB-C port.
Increasing thickness or removing Face ID would only make it more expensive.
Touch ID is used in Apple’s lower priced iPads — and is now “parts bin” stuff and available if lower cost. Increasing thickness is optional but might allow use of lower cost (thicker) components, possibly even a lower cost IPS display, and relax some manufacturing tolerances.
The iPhone 12-14 style chassis was and is produced at a much higher rate and with the 15 will be USB-C ready with much less development effort.
Perhaps, but a 12-14 (soon 12-15) form factor would probably cannibalize many more sales that would otherwise be iPhone 14/15 sales. An iPhone 13 mini size device (perhaps a little thicker) wouldn’t, not nearly as much anyway. Apple‘s goal with the SE should be to attract new customers to iPhone, particularly aspirational consumers in developing economies, and to minimize defections to Android. Hitting a ~$479 price target without overly cannibalizing higher priced phones seems best achievable with a more differentiated product. Today’s iPhone SE sports a 4.7 inch display. Maintaining screen size differentiation sure seems like the best way to hit both price and segmentation goals.

Who knows what will happen in the next couple of years. At some point the iPad mini seemed on the way out and there were threads like this full of "if you like a smaller tablet, just buy a large phone". It now seems to be here to stay, with less frequent updates and a less competitive price. The same might work for the smaller phones too...

As far as I am concerned, I can see a use for it. Some of my friends have one and like it. If I were to update my (old) iPhone, this is the form factor I would prefer as well.

Read a lot of the comments here and I will just say this, having lived through all iterations of the iPhone, having a device that you can weld with one hand is why I loved the iPhone 5 form factor. When the iPhones started getting bigger not only was it a weight thing, but you were also pressed into using two hands … I found this annoying … but actually the brick in my pocket was the bigger annoyance.

I am still using my 12 mini and will not upgrade till there is a new mini. Maybe the next iPhone SE will be the mini with a new chip.
That's why I upgraded from my 12 mini (which I loved) to a 13 mini (which I love) last year when the 14s were announced. Slightly better speed, camera, battery life, but mainly I figured it would start losing OS updates etc. a year later than the 12 and I plan to hold out as long as I can before I'm forced to buy a bigger phone.

I never had a mini and probably wouldn't ever had bought one either except for a backup phone. Still think it belongs in Apple's lineup somehow haha. Agree that the next SE should be mini form factor but all signs point otherwise.

OTOH it might not, I get discontinuing the 12 mini last year as the 13 was an altogether better buy, and there probably wasn't really the market to support 2 mini models, as the 13M is the last model standing now though they may just let it run another year alongside the 6.1" model? Perhaps with fewer colour options and storage tiers like they used to do.

In my book the 13 Mini is the best phone Apple ever made. I hope my two units (one personal, one for work) will last a long time. I don't understand why it apparently didn't find its audience. :(

The trend to larger phones has been with us for at least a decade. A lot of consumers want a larger phone because they don't want to carry around or even buy an iPad or a Mac.

How are these two connected? When Apple allow side-loading, it will apply to all of their devices, right?
They are not connected. They are just my personal criteria to make me buy a new iPhone.
I’d either have a new mini or I want a phone that I can use however I like.

I love my 13 mini. I don't like the footprint of huge phones in the pockets and for running and cycling, anything bigger than a mini is a chore. The mini disappears in a cycling jersey pocket. Anything bigger and I constantly know its there. Annoying.
I think they did a poor job marketing it. I still get surprises to this day that Apple makes a smaller iPhone when they see me and my wife using it.

Looks like I'll be sticking with my 12 Mini for forseeable future. Where it matters, it's tech specs still match the 14 ( sales hint Apple: perhaps the ability to compare iPhones with in-store app not a good idea), and I really don't want a small tablet in my pocket.
Perhaps Mini didn't sell as well as it should (given the 'pent up demand'), because the price differential wasn't great enough. Plus, of course, Apple, it Stores and it's 3rd Party retailers didn't actually make a lot of effort at advertising them.

... so? What are you trying to tell me with that? That does not change my statement at all, but have at ya.
I think he means if you're not using massive amounts of screen time, you must be a filthy casual. Odd thing to flex on.

My wife and I traveled to Europe, with a 12 mini and 13 mini. We did fine. No battery anxiety. We did all the smart phone things; navigation, camera, translation, Kindle reading, messaging, emails, pay parking fees, pay restaurant checks, etc.
But according to this guy, we didn't smartphone enough I guess.

I love my 12 mini - it's been a great phone for me. But I understand Apple is running a business and it didn't generate the demand required to keep it going. Okay. My next phone will be a 15 Pro.

Doesn't mean I have to be happy about it, though! :D
