@jclo There is an error in this article. The MacBook Air 2018/2019 doesn't support this feature cause it can't run macOS Sequoia.

It’s a cool demo. But I find it hard to see a use case for this feature. Why use a non touch screen to mirror an iPhone that also cant take advantage of the bigger screen size.

Because it’s in your pocket or drawer or across the room charging and you need to do that thing on your phone.

This is gonna be huge for those of us that support our elderly parents' iPhones and aren't always in the same location!

Apparently it might not work that way. Sounds like the phone needs to be in proximity.

That said… no idea why we still can’t Airplay mirror from one iPhone to another in order to locally screen share. Would create all kinds of new interactions and paired computing/gaming opportunities to be able to browse together or show someone something without turning your screen to them, since they have the same screen in their hand.

Also missing is a built remote client for exactly that use case. Squinting through the front camera pointed at another screen over a FaceTime call to diagnose something is so painful.

I know what you’re thinking, and yes: this would all be better if the Mac had a touchscreen or if it worked with your iPad. Alas. Even in our decidedly lesser reality, I’ve been testing the new feature, and I’ve discovered a surprising number of reasons it’s handy to be able to use my iPhone from my laptop. I’ve fired up phone mirroring to tweak my smart thermostat, which you can only do from the mobile app.
I’ve used it repeatedly to AirDrop things between my devices, which I can now do without switching back and forth between them. I can now respond to texts from my work computer without logging in to iMessage on my work computer and control my music and podcasts without constantly digging my phone out of my pocket. I like the Apple Journal app, and now I type in it a lot more from my laptop than on my phone.
I think I’ve used it most for managing notifications, though. When you start mirroring your phone, you also start mirroring its notifications, so everything that buzzes your iPhone also buzzes your Mac. I never realized how often I grab my phone off the desk even while I’m sitting at my computer, and mirroring requires much less context switching. It has also made me acutely aware of just how many buzzes I get — if you use phone mirroring, be prepared to turn off a lot of notifications.
The biggest thing missing from phone mirroring right now is drag and drop between devices, which would instantly be the best thing about it. Apple says it’s coming later this year, and I hope it’s easy to grab photos, files, and everything else from my phone.

No interest in this.
What I want is the ability to control my mac from my iPad.
But it seems Apple has no intention...

Three things jump to mind that work on phone but not macOS.

My banking app. While I can login to my bank's website, there are things that are either much easier on the app, or even not possible on the website. (They have just updated the app and I have not recently checked the website vs app differences. But a little while ago it was incredibly annoying.)

My UK NHS app does things that cannot be done any other way - there is no website-type alternative.

My authenticator app.

I think most other things either don't bother me significantly or wouldn't make sense. But I can see the potential for lots of little things. Like setting up a journey in Apple Maps. Doing crosswords on my newspaper app (website has same crosswords but different interface and you cannot jump with a half-done crossword from one to the other).

I have a mac mini (upstairs) and an MBP (usually downstairs). I hope that switching between the two works smoothly and easily - and, for me, always links to the physically closer mac. Both are within wifi and Bluetooth range.

When will it be available in the EU?

It would be great to use the computer to control the iPhone when using it to stream to my stereo.

For those wondering the use case, I run the TikTok of a large company and there’s no way to post to TikTok from a computer. It’s very tedious and easy to make mistakes posting from my phone. Specifically trimming and aligning music from the TikTok library is a total pain with your finger but you need the music to be added in app for discoverability reasons. Writing long video descriptions is also a pain so I currently have to switch apps and copy then go back and paste and paste doesn’t work on iPhone half of the time if the box is empty so I have to type a letter, highlight that letter with my finger, than paste over it. All this gets old when you’re posting 2-3 vids a day.

That all said, I’ve so far avoided pairing my iPhone or Apple ID to my work MacBook. I already hate that my personal phone is overrun with work junk, especially 20-30GB of video footage a day. I don’t want anything on my work computer syncing to my Apple ID and don’t want personal notifications etc popping up on my work laptop.

Really wish my work would spring for a work phone or that Apple had better profiles on the iPhone.

I'm logged into my work Mac with my Apple ID (to enable Watch unlock) and nothing from my iPhone ever shows up on that Mac. You just need to turn off everything in iCloud Settings and sign out of Messages and FaceTime.

Craig Federighi hinted that Continuity Camera should work with iPhone mirroring in an interview post-WWDC. I'm unsure if he was misinformed or if that means that it is coming. I would be disappointed of this limitation
Craig Federghi is unlikely to be un informed when it comes to cameras and mirroring. He spends most of his time infront of a camera or looking in the mirror to curate and maintain his hair. So I take it when he says something about mirrors, that it is 100 percent accurate.

Some say his hair is a separate organism, some that it’s artificial (AI), but most think it’s real but that it’s taken decades of development within Apple R&D.

Can someone test: iPhone Mirroring on your device, you sharing your screen with a friend using Apple's Screen Sharing app. Can the friend see your mirrored iphone on their side and/or control it?

Would really help with friend/family IT if I could control their phone this way.

Best use case for me is likely those pesky 2FA apps like Microsoft Authenticator that I have to use for work all the time. Although I don't know how that would work since it needs FaceID to unlock? There are many times I get the authentication prompt but my phone is not close by.

I like the idea of making the Mac the “control center” of your Apple life. They are doing this between the watch and iPhone it would be nice if watch was also on Mac.

Now I am just getting petty, but dang could they have come up with a cooler looking app icon for screen sharing? something that doesn't look so blehhh?

This seemingly bold idea might actually work. Apple has always insisted on keeping iOS and macOS distinct. As a result, we are left with a dichotomy of design features that have never quite harmonized. To put it bluntly, it’s still a workaround, and I believe Apple will eventually follow Microsoft’s path, primarily in the tablet sector. 🤷‍♂️

So mine was working flawlessly for a while. And not it will not connect to my phone saying that the mic is in use. While it is not. Any solutions?
