yeah, that's not a good sign...I liked it better when they focused on the products and not the numbers, but Tim is a numbers guy (sigh) :(

Yeah, it's really a bad sign for Apple that some third party site publishes a chart. Tim Cook should have better things to do. Wait... it was a third party site that published this! Has nothing to do with Apple!
[doublepost=1490193662][/doublepost]It looks like phones shipping under 20 million or so are not mentioned. Strange that there is no news of the 5SE. And I suppose there would have been a bunch of iPhone 6 (not S) sold as well in 2016.

Still the best by a huge distance, despite the flaws.
But... everyone is always saying that Android rules the world and iPhones are mere also-rans.... How many Android phones were sold last year? I know that all the network outlets near me really try hard to sell you a Samsung or a Sony. Two out of the three don't even have an iPhone on show or in stock. They obviously don't make much money from the iPhone then.
How does all this square up?
Confused?
Or perhaps this really is only applicable to the USA?

Apple's iPhone is the single best selling device.

However, android, on aggregrate, sell more devices. But from dozens of manufacturers. you're confusing the market share of the industry at hole to individual device sales figures.

Samsung for example, has 4 different lineups of devices. HTC has 3 or 4 as well. Sony has their own lineup. Oppo has a few. OnePlus has 2, Huawei has 5-6, etc. So when compared one on one, Apple dominates any single manufacturer and any single product line.

When compared to the whole smartphone industry, Apple is only about 30-40%, with the combined android making up 60-70% of market share.

depends on the device / carrier. But generally yes.

Ok cool, it almost seemed like you believed that subsidiaries created an uneven playing field for competitors, but that was just my most likely false interpretation :) .

Gotta re-read the article but did they get the number from Apple?
I'm glad to see them in any event as to read the hash on here, you'd think that Samsung is #1...
I really don't care, I'm not a shareholder, I just get tired of the negativity.
Buy the phone you like and enjoy it!

Sorry if that's what it sounded like. Not at all what I was implying there.

just countering the argument that iPhone users = Rich. Android users = poor. which is a myth

The fact that they sold nearly as many iPhone 7 units in 3.5 months in 2016 as they did 6s units in ALL of 2016 is a very, very positive sign.

Here is my observation. While most careers stopped giving subsidized iPhones under contract, Apple had a monthly upgrade plan. That made iPhone more affordable than the other phones as no other company provided affordable way to get their flagship device. When my iphone6 contract ended, I tried to see if there is a monthly plan from Samsung. There is none. So I have not upgraded to iphone7 and still on iphone6. Can this be one of the reason of higher iPhone shipping number?

''iPhone 6s took the top spot as the most-shipped smartphone in the world in 2016, trailed by the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 6s Plus, based on research from IHS Markit's Smartphone Shipment Database, which tracks quarterly shipment data for more than 350 smartphone models.''

So a shipping company does research to review what a smart phone shipments are like, and suddenly it's Tim Cook's fault because Apple is in focusing on profits anymore?

This article has nothing to do with Apple. This is Mac rumors reporting on research the web third-party did regarding smart phone shipments... nothing to do with Tim Cook.

Either people need to work on the reading comprehension or the blatantly trying to twist this random data to try and make apple up here in a bad light.

Yeah I looked to upgrade my 6 too and you don't get squat from apple for your phone so no don't think so.
Some of the carriers had great deals on the 7 if you bought one when it first came out but thats no different than samsung, and samsung phones are already a lot less depending on which one you buy.

No problem. And of course it's a myth, as other phones are equally expensive, or cheap.

Where's the Pixel? It's been sold out for months.
The Pixel is only sold in 5 developed countries (Australia, Canada, Germany, United Kingdom, United States) and India. It is not sold in majority of Asian countries, not even Japan (which usually got Nexus phones in the past).
Majority of the growth in sales are in emerging markets like China.

The best smartphone ever :-............... iPhone 7 Plus Jet Black

I'm still holding off on upgrading for another year or so, but the Jet Black does seem pretty nice. Best part is it's grippy enough that I think I could go back to caseless. I hope they do this on more (or all) of the models going forward.

Edit: However, I think I would probably need to go non-plus. IMO the plus is still too unmanageable without a case

And... as of August 2015, there were roughly 24,000 Android devices from 1,300 manufacturers.
