CBW 3G network

Seems to pretty well go with what I said earlier. Well I am not sure if it is Cincinnati Bell's fault entirely. I mean since when does the government work fast? The more concerning thing is CinBell only offers 1 3G capable phone. Leads me to believe they are not very close to get approval.

They did have another 3G phone but it's not listed any more. I don't know why. It was the Nokia 6362.
Anyway, I just got an update on Twitter from someone who works for them. He said it should be Oct 15. I haven't found anything on the FCC's website. Again, they are government so who knows.

Just searched the 2008 2nd quarter conference call. Confirmed 3g network is built and ready to go just awaiting the FCC. October 15th sounds about right to me

Sorry to bump an aging thread, but there seemed to be some issues still on the table, such as how closely CinBell monitors your data usage and where you live.

I signed up for a promotional 1000 minute/unlimited nights and weekends plan for $39.99 about four years ago. This was fine until I got my iPhone last year, whereupon I added the $15 unlimited internet/unlimited SMS.

Since then, I have pulled down about 200 MB a month in emails and browsing. I send and receive about 600 texts a month. I live in Michigan now (although my account is still based in Springboro, where my mom still lives). CinBell has never winked at my internet usage or my extensive roaming in Michigan (up here, the CinBell phone uses the Centennial Wireless network). Before I was in Michigan, I was in college in SE Ohio roaming on the AT&T/Cingular network. No problemo.

I have often wondered if CinBell checks to see if your calls are originating from their territory in the Dayton/Cincy area. So far, I've had three years in SE Ohio and about two and a half years in Mich.

It's really been seamless for me. If anyone is still concerned about taking the CinBell/iPhone plunge, don't be. The water's fine.

i have heard that Cincinnati Bell will eventually check to see if your calls are coming from their local area, but i'm not sure

If you go to espn.com from any carrier with an iPhone, it will go to the mobile version. Its the way the site is configured, not the carrier. The useragent of Safari identifies it as an iphone, and espn.com is programed to give the mobile site.
At the very bottom of the mobile espn site, there is a link to the full version of it.

From when I worked at CBW, they occasionally would do an audit of people roaming. They let people go that are in college. Don't be surprised if they say that they are terminate service sometime in the future.

True. And FWIW, NFL.com has launched a nice iPhone-ish mobile site.

So far, so good. I might need to clone my SIM card and send it to my mom to put in her phone and make some night time calls to a toll free number. :)

Ditto on bumping up an aging thread… but I am ready to get into the water and would like to understand exactly how people:

1st – got an iPhone from other then Apple Store or AT&T
2nd – got a 3G SIM Card from CinBell (I’d think just walk into a store and ask for one)
3rd – if necessary, hacked the phone to use the CinBell SIM
4th – all the other steps I am sure that I am missing

Appreciate any advice/instruction

1.Buy one off of eBay or Craigslist.
2.The 3G network for Cincinnati Bell is not ready AFAIK.
3.Unlock it (not available for 3G version.
4. None:D

Thanks for the quick reply! Couple of things:

I’ve heard that their 3G Network is not yet ready. So in the meantime just stick with my GSM card?

What do you mean the 3G iPhone is not available to be unlocked? (Unlocking – Jailbreaking are the same thing, no?) There is someone in the Nati that is advertising unlocking (see: http://www.garypedia.com/cellphone/classifieds/cincinnatiiphone.php).

Shouldn’t 4. be: Configure iPhone 3G to CinBell network?

Thanks again!

Currently you can only use a 1st generation iPhone on Cincinnati Bell, so just CBW's regular sim will do.

This is for two reasons:

1. The iPhone 3G is not yet unlockable.
Jailbreaking and unlocking are different. Jailbreaking allows you to install other software and themes, and allows access to the phone.
Unlocking actually allows you to use another GSM carrier (CBW or TMobile).
You can jailbreak the iPhone 3G, but not unlock

2. CBW currently does not have a 3G network enabled. I believe they are rolling it out, but haven't turned it on yet. It may not work with the iPhone 3G once they do. I don't know any details of CBW's network yet, but I know that ATT and Tmobile's 3G networks are different and incompatible.

Also, do not pay for unlocking, it isn't hard and there are plenty of tutorials on how to do it.
Here is step by step directions for jailbreaking and unlocking a 2G iPhone with 2.1

According to this site, you can: http://gevey-3g.com/

Sorry, I was speaking about a pure software unlock like you can do for a 1st gen. There is nothing extra to buy.

The iphone dev team is working on it, but they haven't gotten it yet

3G Hardware Hack

Ah, thx for the clarification. I'd want a 3G over the 2G. I guess it's hardware mod for me since the Dev Team has no real timeframe of breaking the code.

Thanks again for all the responses!

I would wait for more info on CBW's 3G network the iphone 3G might not be compatible and you will be stuck with Edge only anyway. The only other major advantage to the 3G is the GPS.

I am fairly sure that CBW took the worst route for those of us (me also) who are looking for a sweet 3g phone to use on their 3g network. I have heard/seen a few websites stating the CBW bought spectrum in the AWS aution which means that you will need a phone that supports 1700mhz and/or NA 2100mhz. Right now it looks like the only decent phone to get that would work on cincibells 3g network is the G1.....BOOOO! I was so pissed when i found this out as i just bought an e71 hoping to get my 3g on... To make matters worse Tmobile USA is the only Major carrier in the US that will be using this and they probably wont have the best selection of phones as the past shows. Bad ass AWS phones will probably be rare, for a while atleast.

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out. I am moving to Cincinnati early next year and am wondering about cell phone coverage. It appears that Verizon and AT&T has very good coverage. Do you know about t mobile's coverage? I will likely be living in the Mt Adams area. Thanks!

Verizon and Cincinnati Bell are the best around here, I think.... But if your in the city I image you'll be fine with any of the carriers your curious about. In the suburban areas out side of Cincinnati you will find out that T-mobile and Sprint suck. I would say that if you are data heavy and like using phones not locked to your carrier that CBW is the way to go. I mean 15$/mth for unlim data, pictures and text....you can't beat it.

I hope im not bumping but im very intrested in when the new 3g is out for cbw. And if it possible to get a new 3g with cbw.

You are bumping, but I'm also bumping by answering because I think this is a good discussion. :)

1. The answer depends on whom you ask. My CinBell store told me the last time I was home that the rumor is Q1 2009.

2. A new 3G iPhone? Yes. The 3G iPhone works perfectly on the CinBell network (actually, FWIW, in Dayton my iPhone has faster EDGE and better call quality than a friends' iPhone on the AT&T network), BUT getting a 3G iPhone is tricky because they're only sold w/ a contract.

i have installed yellowsn0w and im ready to do it. i was going to go with tmobile but i heard there coverage wasnt any good and the dont got 3g in the cincy area yet. how is the 3g? and just to clarify, do you just install yellowsn0w and yellowsn0w bosspref switch (dont hafta do that but makes it easier), then reboot, put in the cbw sim and reboot and youre good. i tried it with tmobile but the guy didnt tell me that the sim wasnt activated until we was waiting for sevice:mad: thanks

i just unlocked my first gen iPhone and it's totally fine EXCEPT when i put in the new Cincinnati Bell SIM card it says "Different SIM detected Please connect to iTunes." i went so far as to redo the unlock and still the same result even though the unlock was successful through QuickPWN.

Please let me know if you have any advise.

Nevermind, i got it to work by reinstalling/restoring firmware and trying it again without having previously activated after the firmware restoration!
