Avoiding the $30 PDA/BB unlimited plan with iPhone

Hello I know this is a MAC forum but please be unbiased if you can,

Im comparing at two unlocked phones to be used on CBW network. One is a blackberry or an the other is an Iphone.

It appears if I get a blackberry, I would need to purchase an exclusive unlimited data plan for the blackberry ($30).

The iphone doesnt seem to have this constraint. That is if I purchase an unlocked iphone I can still get by with my regular $15 unlimited text and data.

Reading this forum I see a lot you guys have more insight unto the CBW network than I ever could have.

How can the Iphone (which is just as powerful as the blackberry) not require the higher end data plan? Or this just another pathetic attempt for CBW to get more money out of me?

Thanks

There are good things in life

Cin Bell does not Support/offer an iphone, and they can't stop you putting your sim card in an unlocked phone. I took mine out of my old cheap phone (it's internet experience was no where near a black berry or iphone) and put it in my unlocked iphone and bingo, awesome internet (as awesome as edge is). I bet if you had the $14 plan and put your sim card in an unlocked Back Berry, you would get the same results as the $30 plan? I believe Cin Bell is charging $30 for the Berry's because they are very capable devices and realize you will be using the internet more and they are selling you the black berry, or you tell them that's what your using.

If Cin bell ever offers an iphone I am sure the internet charge will be the same as the black berry, but I assume you can always run unlocked at $14 as long as they offer this plan. No one is going to pay $30 a month for internet on a limited phone like a Nokia 6085, or Nokia 2760.

I hope the $14 plan will last a long time :)

The blackberry will not work correctly with the $15 plan. The $30 data plan routes your data through blackberry's BIS server and you can only access bis by paying for it. The fact that cincinnati has to pay for the licensing of the bis server is why it is $30 dollars a month.

Noob needs help!

Okay i am a Noob to all this very interesting iphone stuff. Here is my situtation:

I am a CBW customer, currently using a Krazor phone, with whatever SIM card is in it. I would like to buy an iphone get version 3.0 and then unlock and jailbreak it once the programs are availible (if they arent already). My concern is the 3G SIM card.
1) Do i need a 3G SIM card to even use the phone or will my old school card work?
2) Is the 3G Card only for the 3G internet speed? Can i get on the internet (not WiFi) with my regular card?

I really appreciate everything, and whatever help is offered.

Everything will work fine except 3G. It operates on a different frequency than what the iPhone uses. You can go ahead and buy an iPhone now, update to 3.0, jailbreak and unlock. We will help you out.:)

Yes, I use Cincinnati Bell on my 3G and you can only get EDGE, which works perfectly, just a little bit slow.
Check Cincinnati Craigslist (you do live in Cincy, right?.
8GB-$300
16GB-$350
They're cheap nowadays.

Well...i used to live there. I am in Indy now. My dad works for CinBell so ofcourse i like to rock the employee/family discount stuff. Once i get the phone, would you be okay with me PM'ing you about the unlock/jailbreak walkthrough?

Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse with this question, but this seems to be the mecca for iphone questions with CBW. Here's my deal. I am currently using the Blackberry Curve 8320, unlocked with WIFI. I currently have data deactivated, meaning if someone sends me a picture or video message, I can't open it. Also, if i'm not in a wifi area and try to get online, it will not let me. That is how I wanted it, since I have WIFI almost everywhere I would need to use it. However, I am wanting to get the iphone, but I want it just how my Curve is now...is that possible? If so what gen do I need? Like I said I'm sorry if this has been addressed. The price of the 1 and 2 gen phones is down to about 200 bucks, which seems like a solid deal to me. However, I just don't want charges out the rear for data when I just want to use the wifi service. Can anyone shed any light? Thanks in advance!!

Yes. Buy yourself an iPhone, unlock and jailbreak it, and then install an app from Cydia like Hood or something similar that lets you deactivate the EDGE radio. This would allow the wifi to operate but not allow any cellular data service. That said, at $15 a month on Cincy Bell, why not get data?

Yea, I'm in the Cincinnati area and I just upgraded to the 3GS and am selling my old 3G, jailbroken and unlocked, for $320. It's in excellent condition aside from a crack on the lower rear portion, which is probably the result of a drop. I never noticed it as I always kept the phone in a rubber protective case. The screen has had a screen protector on it since day 1, or launch day for the 3G last summer. And the phone works perfectly. PM me if anyone is interested and I can post pics too.

Will 3g CBW Data work on 3g iphone?

I bought a 3g iphone last week and just unlocked it. With my regular non3g SIM card, everything on it works great including the data. However, I would rather run 3g data on it opposed to EDGE. I went to a CBW store today and got a 3g SIM card and the tech told me that CBW 3g data is up and running. So when I got home I put in the 3g sim card and I could only make calls. When I try to pick CinBell USA (3G) as my network selection, my iphone says No Service and I cannot get online or make calls... Does anyone no how to get 3G data on a 3G iphone???

You can't, at least, not at home. CBW's 3G network operates on a the 1700MHz bandwidth, which is not compatible with the iPhone 3G. I would assume, however, that with your 3G SIM, you'll be able to access the 3G services while roaming. Until then, you might as well turn 3G off.

Has anyone figured out how to access AT&T services while in Cincinnati/Dayton? With 3G on, I can go into Carrier settings and see "CinBell USA (3G)" listed as an option but it wont let me join. Thoughts?

Check out craigslist for a larger market of buyers. Unfortunately, I think $320 is a little high for a used 3G. I picked up a brand new one for $300 last week and I felt like I paid too much!

IPhone 3G 3.0

Sharing information to all my fellow friends that have IPhones on CinBell

I am using an unlocked IPhone 3g running 3.0 firmware on Cincinnati Bell's network.

I have the $15 data plan and get unlimited text and data. No problems.

The 3G will not work on Cincinnati Bell's 3G network as it uses different bands. If you have a 3G simcard the 3G data speeds will work when you are roaming (ex. lexington)

I was also able to hack in to the MMS portion of the data packet to allow incoming and outgoing MMS.

Here are the settings to send and recieve mms running the new firmware.

Are people sending you messages?:D

Off topic, does anyone have tethering working from help.benm.at? I had it but after a restore last week, tethering disappeared, no matter what I try, the only option is to "Set up internet tethering".

I am purchasing a 3G 8GB black iPhone from a friend. I would like to unlock it and use it on Cincinnati Bell and I am completely clueless about how to do this. Is it possible to turn my phone into a brick by attempting this? Please, any help would be appreciated.
