I pretty indifferent about MMS. It seems like the lack of MMS is partially obviated by email. My impression of MMS is that it suits that annoying and avaricious behavior of any carrier in which they charge for every message (or a block of them). I'd rather email someone ten pictures under a unlimited iPhone package than pay an extra $10 per month for a block of MMS and be forever dealing with some measly file size limit.

I think it won't be on sale until 6pm for the following reasons:

1.) It will allow Jobs to have a gigantic keynote during the day to introduce new features.

2.) The evening news can get to the store in time (free publicity)

Yeah, but AT&T has now, in general, started including MMS in their messaging packages, which is included with the iPhone.

Anyone else think this is just a CYA job?
I think they'll start selling the iPhone as soon as the store receives it but FedEx only guarentees delivery by 6pm, so they need to say that its going to be available at 6pm in case someone comes by in the morning and the store hasn't received their shipment yet.

So I asked an Apple Store employee today about the time I should start lining up for an iPhone and here's what he told me.

"Here's a tip. Go onto our store concierge on the 27th and make an appointment for a personal shopping session on the 29th."

Line avoided if what he says is true.

Holy crap that sounds as legit a loophole as possible.

Unless, like the AT&T stores, the Apple Stores are mandated to operate on a first come/first serve basis. Sort of like at movies -- opening night there are notices of "no passes" on the posters.

Currently there is a $40 data plan for all non-blackberries that includes unlimited data as well as 1500 text messages a month.

But you might consider, the iPhone is geared to using EDGE a *lot* when Wi-Fi isn't around, so maybe the price will be higher. Although, it also uses Wi-Fi, so maybe the price will be lower

So you're telling me a $600 phone with a 2 MP camera will not do MMS? That can't be right. My free Motorola RAZR will do MMS. to Apple for no MMS!

No one I know uses MMS. I don't. I'm not heartbroken over this news. MMS is like Faxing: DEAD

Isn't only supplying it through AT & T the dumbest thing Apple have done in many a year??

It should be sold, unlocked, through the Apple stores, let me choose which network I want to use!

I was going to buy one at release (who cares how much it costs) but try to tie me to AT & T (or any service provider for that matter) and you can keep it!

Although I'll probably buy one ebay the month after realease......

That seems highly unlikely. All the reports ive seen (and calls ive made to ATT stores) say they will be closing around 5 to setup. Also I find it highly unlikely that they will only be receiving their supply that day, they will probably get them a day or 2 in advance (Not to mention, FedEx's has guarantees for much earlier in the day then 6. They are 830, 1030, and 1500 is the last time). It's a typical apple launch, with a dictated time. You may get a handful of stores that sell them early, but not many.

cost of visual voicemail?

so a lot of discussion about the cost of data plans....but no discussion on the price of visual voicemail? im assuming there will be a charge, i mean there is a charge of 1.99 to have "enhanced voicemail" as is, which lets you have more messages and the ability to have a personalized recording.

My vote is that their won't be a charge. From there site, enhanced voicemail adds:
"Enhanced Voicemail ($1.99/month and $2.99/month in New York State) doubles your message capacity from 20 to 40 messages, increases your message length by 1 minute and adds 7 more days of storage time. You can also send messages to groups and use member lists for added convenience."

I think it 'reasonable' for them to charge for that, as it has increased storage requirements. Visual voicemail just trades the access method, so I don't think they will charge for it.

Of course, they are a cell company, and they like to charge for everything, so we will have to see, but my guess is $0.

this is a stupid question, but what is MMS?

I know SMS and I use that on my phone, but i'm not sure of MMS

If you would read the thread, or do a simple google search you would have the answer :)

MMS is a multimedia message. Basically it's like a SMS, but you can attach image/sound/video

6pm on June 29th would be a great time to buy.

However I am in the UK and yet again (still waiting for movie downloads in iTunes) we UK'ers are left waiting for ages beyond those of you in the US.

When when when will Apple release something in the UK at the same time as the US? Are we that insignificant a part of the market that we get forgotten about?

i suppose it's because we hardly use EDGE here in the UK so we'll need a different iphone.

I have seen no mention of what packages are included with the iPhone? Where do you see that?

I believe that it will be unlimited data, and likely unlimited messaging for that price, but I haven't seen that specifically detailed (other then it is unlimited data).

Question

Here's a question. I have a Cingular (ATT) account already. If I buy my phone at an Apple Store, how will I transfer my number and account onto the new phone? Is Apple going to be accessing ATT's system to do this? Will I have to call Cingular(ATT) to activate? What about brand new customers to Cingular? Will Apple be issuing the phone numbers?

Nice idea, but I doubt it, that method wouldn't allow them to guarantee that you have the correct contract.

Ive actually talked to MANY people about this issue. I recently lost my Dash, and with my girlfriend returning to japan for a few months, she asked that I pick up her cingular account. I talked to cingular reps, cell phone store reps, mac reps, etc and I was told that if you already have a contract with cingular you can buy the iphone. What im assuming is that you will be blocked from certain features if you dont switch up your plan. The fact that you can order the phone online backs up the fact that you shouldn't be blocked out if you already have a cingular contract.

2 Year Contract?

As in a new 2 year contract and an 'approved' data plan.

As of a Week ago Tuesday the 2 year contract is OFF the table. As for the 'approved data plan' how else do you expect to browse the internet and use google maps. As I stated in an earlier post you can get a 5M/mo plan for $15.99/mo up to $74.99/mo unlimited family talk data plan (that means multiple user access). CHECK out the AT&T web site for all the Data Connect plans (NOT MediaNet).

On top of that, there have been reports that not only is a data plan required but because AT&T may likely treat the iPhone as a "PDA device," you're locked into the more expensive data plans (you can't pick from the offerings you listed) and these start at $40 a month. Hence the reason that more than a few people are a little perturbed by the news. If we not only have to shell out $600 for the phone but sign a two year contract AND pay an additional $40+/month in fees above and beyond what we're already paying (assuming you don't already have a data plan of some kind), then that's going to alienate a lot of potential buyers.

Note that the data plan requirements and prices aren't confirmed yet, but they are more than just rumors and could materialize. Keep your fingers crossed.

Don't know what AT&T is pulling but depending on how you get there there are several price lists for data plans. If you go to Data Plans from the main site you get AT&T data plans or Smart Phone plans AT&T SmartPhone data plans the plans I found and quoted the other day have disappeared so I can no longer find the 5MB $15.99 /mo data connect plan on their site. I will continue my search but this online pricing has it's advantages and disadvantages (being able to change all your pricing at whim with a couple keystrokes). It's like Gas prices just before big holidays the prices go up only to drop the week after. Also these prices are tied to SE Pennsylvania so prices elsewhere in the US might be different.

UPDATE: Found a rate table AT&T data plan table and coverage areas for EDGE & 3G AT&T EDGE Coverage Map and the 3G covered cities if they've include an active 3G chip set in the phone AT&T 3G Coverage Viewer
