Probably not...

Around here the Apple Store closes hours before 6 and then a huge line builds outside while they're setting it all up.

:)

But will the phone be on display and available for people to test when the stores open?! That way people can get their hands on it and make up their minds if they really want to dole out 500-600+ for the phone and possibly plan!

When are they revealing the AT&T price plans?
That's very important and I wish they had that info already available so people can start planning what to do.
That's lame that until now we have not heard anything about this matter.

EXACTLY! Why are they waiting to talk about the price plans? Surely they have this all wrapped up. If they don't, then that can't bode well for Apple and/or AT&T.

:-(.

So, I moved to downtown Palo Alto a month ago for nothing :-(. I was planning on camping out there the night before. Now I have to take a day off :).

Anyways, I guess they choose the time in-line with all earnings/financial results. i.e. they are releasing the phone after market close on Friday.

Should we sell AAPL short? :)

$40 data plan

Currently there is a $40 data plan for all non-blackberries that includes unlimited data as well as 1500 text messages a month.

According the at&t stores the voice plans will be the same - big question outstanding was/is data depending on how much credit you give to the 40 dollar figure posted here.

Ugh. $40 is a lot.

Agreed. That is their unlimited data plus unlimited messaging (. What sucks is that you are paying $20 for the unlimited messaging, even though the iPhone doesn't even do MMS. The unlimited data+200 messages is only $20, and only $5 more for unlimited AT&T messaging+200 'other' messages. Heck, even unlimited data + 1500 messages is $30. So they are forcing you to pay for more then 1500 SMS/mo. That's ridiculous.

That's even the same price as PDA connect unlimited, meaning that it is for a PDA phone, and you can tether it to a laptop and use it unlimitedly. They are really gouging for this. $40 is their most expensive data plans.

What has worked for other phones with required data plans is to call up AT&T after you get the iPhone, and ask to change your plan. Usually if you try a bunch of time (different agents), you can get someone to do it. But they may be hit to this for the iPhone and may flag the accounts.

Edit: The prices listed are from the options listed in my cingular account (features that I can change on my own). For some reason the http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/cell-phone-plans/data-cell-phone-plans.jsp site lists significantly different prices.

So I asked an Apple Store employee today about the time I should start lining up for an iPhone and here's what he told me.

"Here's a tip. Go onto our store concierge on the 27th and make an appointment for a personal shopping session on the 29th."

Line avoided if what he says is true.

And if you have ProCare or whatever it's called, you can make an appointment 14 days in advance. But I doubt if there's a line they'll be yelling out names for people who made a Personal Shopping session.

I'll buy it at 6pm on June 29th 2008 from Amazon.com for 1 cent (before $50 rebate) and free shipping. And the bugs will be worked out by then, too.

...snip...even though the iPhone doesn't even do MMS...snip...

So you're telling me a $600 phone with a 2 MP camera will not do MMS? That can't be right. My free Motorola RAZR will do MMS. to Apple for no MMS!

Looking at the link you gave, they are allowing sending of pics/vids via e-mail. I guess I can understand that, as they want to really push the iPhone as a small computer that can make calls. They want you to use that mail app instead of texting.

Yeah, but MMS/SMS are not replaced in anyway by email, unless the receiver also has email on their phone. Even then, it require push to work the same. Also, what about if someone sends you a MMS? My understanding is that you get a text message, and it is stored in some mailbox somewhere for you (Im not sure if that is how it works on AT&T, but that how it works on at least some other carriers)

I have Procare and checked up on that. So far there is no option for iPhone, just Macs, iPods, and :apple: TV. Maybe an iPhone option will show up. Later on. I see what you mean about the line though. Guess we'll see.

i don't see a $40 option at at&t

there's the unlimited pda connect and pda unlimited both of which have unlimited data for $45 a month... then theres the smartphone connect which is unlimited for $20.

i believe those data/pda plans are just that for non-phone PDAs... i don't put it past apple to charge $40 a month, but man that knocks the pice of this thing up... could buy a mabook for that.

Pandemonium reigns at iPhone sale

Have you ever been to an AT&T (Cingular) store after hours, the lines are horrendous people filling out all the forms and having their new phones explained to them. Just last Friday evening (~6:30) I waited over an hour for five customers to get their new phones or exchange a phone and then ask my iPhone availability question - when will the phones go on sale on the 29th? Which Steve answered on Monday at WWDC. The best thing would be for there to be an on-line signup for your data service and phone plan then be issued a barcoded certificate that could be taken to the store where an express line would handle the delivery of the unit and the necessary signatures and payment. Then you walk out a happy new iPhone owner to show everyone outside the store all the cool features of your new PHONE, MUSIC PLAYER, WEB BROWSER. Any other scenario would be a Black Friday sale or everyone in HELL waiting to get an Ice Cube. Can you say UGLY.:(
