There's so much hearsay and just flat out made-up information about Verizon in this thread it's kind of disturbing. It reminds me of when Windows users say Macs don't have a right-click.

I see the iPhone as no different than a "Google-experience" phone (the Droid). Verizon seems fine in letting Google have complete control over the software and leaving the hardware alone, so why would dealing with Apple be any different?

Verizon isn't letting Google have complete control over the experience. This is not who Verizon is. I'm pretty sure that Verizon will have some tie-ins to their services and maybe even their own app store that Verizon has mentioned before. The only thing we know for 100% right now is that Verizon will allow Google Voice on their handsets.

Hell no!

After making all those ads against AT&T and Apple they still want to have the iPhone on their network. Hell no. Don't do it Apple!

Frankly at this point I'm beginning to wonder how much *AT&T* has to gain by offering Apple a huge costly exclusivity deal. Yes, the iPhone would shortly reach T-Mobile but it likely isn't big enough to cause significant bleeding, and some iPhone migration would be better for AT&T's service anyhow. Perhaps it would be worth gambling that there are too many control issues for Apple to be willing to produce a CDMA handset?

It's an unfortunate situation for US consumers in any case. :(

Verizon + ATT = Super Power

Has anyone seen the Verizon and ATT 3G comparison map? Wouldn't Apple want to tap into the Verizon market to gain access to those people? That's a crap load of money right there for Apple.

I can see Apple moving forward to Verizon next year after the 4G LTE Network launch. That way Apple can promote an iPhone 4G and not have to stay with the slower lame name iPhone 3G. Apple likes adding higher numbers and stuff.

Think about the iPhone LiTE ... It's a Light phone on a LTE network. haha

That and I can also see ATT merging with Verizon and Verizon being the super power in the U.S. in cell phones... This merge will happen. Happened before. It will happen again. Like Armageddon. haha

Meh. Bringing the iPhone to Verizon is only going to increase complaints about networks. Apple cannot be happy with Verizon, the ads and then statements like this. If Verizon was smart they would deal with things in private.

I would love to see apple put the iphone on sprint just to spite verizon. Verizon is a joke anyway

I got my first iPhone in late August and love it. I can't stop using it. Now, the PHONE SERVICE is pretty bad in my area (New England) as it was 5 years ago when I switched to Verizon. But my old Verizon phone died, the contract expired a year ago, and I figured I would try ATT and the iPhone. Seems like ATT just doesn't update/add towers anywhere in New England...guess ATT just feels grandmas use their service and doesn't realize it's almost 2010. Shoddy phone service for a giant like ATT that's been in biz for 100 years.

I find myself using the iPhone far more for non-phonecalls than I thought...but...if Verizon does pick up the iPhone in 2010 or 2011, I will switch back (and hey, have an iPhone that is 2 gens newer!) to Verizon to get the FABULOUS phone coverage in New England.

I've been on Alltel since 2003. now Verizon, so we'll see how that goes. I'm really hoping Apple opens up the iphone to them because AT&T's coverage is a joke.

You're telling me a CEO wants a piece of that large pie apple is baking...what a shocker.

I mean duh people, of course if Apple wanted to do business with VZW they'd say yes, that's after seeing all that money At&t has been raking in and their customer base exploding.

Forget what Verizon is marketing, they still have to try to make money for the time being, but if the time comes where Apple has the chance to partner up with Verizon, you can bet that effort will be made. They already made the mistake once.

I wonder if whomever rejected the iPhone initially at Verizon still has a job:(. They lost a bunch of greenbacks on that decision. Don't hold your breath for 4G. I recently read that it will take 4 to 7 years before a complete rollout will be completed. I think I'll wait to upgrade my 3Gs until a complete rollout and see which companies have the iphone. I don't like Sprint. My son just received the new T-Mobile Cliq by Motorola. He wasn't supposed to get it for another 2 weeks. When he called, T-Moble said he was probably the first person in the US to get it. It's really a neat phone. I still prefer the iPhone.

Verizon screwed themselves a lot earlier than that, IMHO

I was once a faithful Verizon customer, but I dumped them long before the iPhone existed - because their rate plans were terrible.

I know with all of AT&T's issues, it's easy to reach out to any competitor as a "better" choice - but seriously, Verizon would be among my *last* choices, if I could have my pick of any carrier for the iPhone.

For starters, I was really using a lot of peak minutes at one point during my Verizon contract (used the phone all the time for the on-site computer service business I was working for, plus lots of personal calls). My bills started getting ridiculous, due to constant "overages". Verizon, however, refused to sell me a plan with any more peak minutes, claiming I was already on the "largest plan they offered". (Sprint, by comparison, was happy to charge reasonable little $5 fees to buy blocks of extra minutes as you went over their monthly allotment. And if I had used U.S. Cellular, it wouldn't have even become an issue, since all incoming calls are free with them - and that was easily 3/4ths. of the calls I was dealing with.)

Additionally, Verizon is expensive for their data. Unlimited data plans are typically around $49.95 per month. Sure, they could do what AT&T did and make a special set of pricing plans for iPhones -- but my guess is that if they did, you'd be paying at least $10-20 more per month than AT&T's rates.

Lastly, while I didn't have all the dropped calls I get with AT&T, I did experience a lot of noisy calls I had to cancel and re-try to get a usable connection. Verizon was really bad about giving me a call where I'd hear another conversation going on in the background, or my own voice echoing in the background every time I spoke.

Verizon dumps a LOAD of money on advertising, but just because we all know the face of the "Can you hear me now?" guy doesn't mean they *really* have the most trouble-free and reliable network in the marketplace. My experience is, they have an "adequate" network with "above average" coverage, but you pay top dollar for something that's not really "impressive" at all on overall call quality.

Ya. I say BLA BLA BLA Verizon. It won't happen till 4G, and who cares! Verizon had the chance and screwed themselves over, so they can eat it! :p

Maybe I am the only person, but I have been using ATT for years and I have not had any issues in my hometown, or abroad. I find coverage to be excellent and speed blows just about anything Verizon has to offer out of the water. Last time I checked Verizon's data plan was $50, I would rather pay $30. And those "There's an Map for that" adds are a complete joke. Has anybody looked closely at it? They say there is just about no coverage everywhere in the US except for New York City, LA, and Dallas. Really? Really? I was just in Vermont and there was plenty of 3G coverage.

leading to speculation that the carrier does not foresee an introduction of the iPhone on its network and is thus willing to burn bridges with Apple in the new ads.

That is how I saw the Verizon commercials, mocking the "there's an app for that" slogan and Apple's iPhone commercials.

Ah, but you are missing something.

By putting an LTE radio in the iPhone 4G you are allowing it to use all legacy networks, effectively letting Apple use the current verizon 3g network without having to design a CDMA iPhone.

From the wiki: "LTE will also support seamless passing to cell towers with older network technology such as GSM, cdmaOne, W-CDMA (UMTS), and CDMA2000."

Ahh but that would probably depend on other radio chips, and also the frequencies the phone receives. For example T Mobile in the US uses the exact same 3G technology (UTMS HSPDA) as AT&T but at a differing frequency. The iPhone 3G and 3GS will work with AT&T's frequencies but not T Mobile's

Verizon Wireless still makes a lot of money quarter after quarter without the iphone. The guy who rejected the iphone was promoted to the number 2 spot at the parent company. He has since announced that he is retiring --- but that has to do with the fact that he is older than the CEO, so he can't possibly be promoted to the number 1 spot.

AT&T got the iphone, got the headaches with the network complaints, got the wall street to question whether they actually make money off the iphone.

Verizon: It's in Apple's court... and oh by the way the iPhone sucks, and so does AT&T! Join Verizon!

Verizon LTE

What the article fails to mention is the spectrum bands that Verizon has decided to use 800mhz (recall that huge 700Mhz White Space auction last year)? I'm unsure if AT&T will use this band for LTE or the same 850/1900Mhz that 3.5G UMTS and HSPA+ will use.

Of course bands are always in a range in real world implementation and those stated are rounded off for simplicity.

LOL. Exactly. "Hey, its in Apple's court... oh, and did we mention they can 'suck it'?" Verizon is interested in anyone that will play ball with them. This is likely the MOST accurate way to look at the situation.

VERIZON: The ball is in Apple's court.
APPLE: Any solution needs to be part of our early global one-phone strategy.

So... what are you both saying?

VERIZON: Apple can suck it.
APPLE: Verizon can suck it.

No, you're not alone. I've never had a problem with AT&T either. Nor Cingular before them.

I can't comment on Verizon as I've never had their service but I have had Sprint and T-Mobile. The bottom line is all wireless carriers are demon spawn. Horrible customer service and ridiculous charges (AT&T's text messaging is ludicrous). T-Mobile was my favorite of the bunch, but that's not saying much.

Perhaps if the wireless companies would quit paying to have a sales station and 10 annoying salesmen every 20 feet in every mall in America they could pass some of those savings on to us, the consumers.

What a racket.

All these different cell radio technology is stupid. Why not standardize on one standard. That way you do not have to have all these different radios.

LTE aka 4G is what you speak of. Its all on a GSM based cell radio if I'm not mistaken, meaning basically everyone around the world will be on GSM, this happens starting now ending in 5 years or so but really 5 years since that's when the new networks will be complete.

Forget the ads Verizon has out, look at Apple's advertising and tell me its any different. The point is both companies will play ball under the right circumstances, both will make a ton of money if/when those circumstances come together.

For now VZW pushes to be the #1 Android carrier, and it will, and it will be running phones that run circles around the iPhone performance wise if the HTC Passion hits soon (with snapdragon).

Well, going with T-Mobile USA would also go into a weird spectrum band (AWS 1700 MHz).

From a consumer's point of view, why would you care? When you move to a new carrier, you sign a 2 year contract and they give you a free phone.

Having different standards promotes competition.
