That's the point, on a 3G this doesn't do anything (well you can set it up to pull up favorites, iPod, Camera, or Search.)

Thus this is locking 3G people out of features like lock rotation? That seems like a really silly. :( I hope that they update this so 3G people can get in on the rotation lock.

Apple should just bin 4.0 for the 3G, I see no point in them releasing it when there's basic things like backgrounds and now the orientation lock missing.

I understand multitasking being left out because the hardware can't handle it, but the other features that are missing are as much a farce as when MMS was left out of the original iPhone during a previous update.

So... do wallpapers work on the 3G now?

Edit: I've read on a Dutch website it still doesn't work. I don't think this is a bug, 3G won't get wallpapers. Very lame.

I skipped b2, but Gmail settings now has an Archive Message setting. On - messages archive when trashed. Off - previous delete function.

The archive only in 4.0b1 was really annoying, glad they have added the option to delete.

how to safely upgrade from beta 1 to beta 3?

Hey read that in the release notes this "When upgrading a device from Beta 1, you must perform an Erase Install, followed by a restore of your backup. If you had a passcode set, your passcode will be erased, and you must enter a new one after the restore.

If you back up your device on a computer running Mac OS X, you must install the Beta 3 SDK on that computer before you attempt to backup and restore the device, otherwise the device will refuse to proceed with the backup. If you also reinstall iTunes, you must install the Beta 3 SDK after installing iTunes."

How should I proceed since with beta 1 my itunes would never backup my iphone saying it wasn't recognized? Should I have jumped to beta 2 to avoid this issue if so does anyone still have beta 2 to download? Thanks and sorry for the noob question...

When you have notifications in one of your folders, you no longer get a ! it now shows the total number of notifications.

Tap and hold on one icon.

That's one icon - unless the OP got it wrong, how do you 'kill' multiple apps? :D

You have to download the SDK to upgrade. I was on Beta 1 and got the same errors. I skipped B2. I installed the B2 SDK (cause B3 was still pulled). After I installed it, I synced and my backup error went away. Did the B3 install and it will wipe you device during the install but will let you restore your backup. Also remember to register your device in the Developer Portal or it won't activate your phone after the upgrade is complete.

Because they don't stop shaking after you delete the first one - in other words, once you hold one icon, you can then terminate as many 'backgrounded' apps as you like, without having to hold them one by one.

People really need to realize what the app tray actually is in order to use their phones most efficiently. I expect some people to be confused by it, but it's MacRumors' job to get the facts straight and correct misconceptions. It's not "closing apps" when you click the minus sign. It's merely removing them from your most recent list.

Your totally right Badandy - I got suckered intro what I 'thought' even though I knew Apple has implemented an 'quick app launcher'.

More bad use of terminology to come!

At least at the moment, it does actually kill apps though. Play some music and remove the iPod. The music stops.

Yes, the ones that are using the multi-tasking API's will stop using those services once you click the minus sign, but referring to clicking those minus signs as closing the apps in general (and consequently giving users the idea that they need to somehow manage the memory themselves) is wrong.

I thought it was odd that Apple even included the ability to remove them. I understand the need to be able to kill a process if it's malfunctioning but other than that and OCD I can't see any use for it if Apple has indeed done such a great job with memory management.

Because say you have an app like Loopt. They said that when you switched cell towers it will update your location on Loopt in the background. If you dont manually close this, it will continue to do this.

You close the apps because you don't want them to access the background API's anymore.

Is anyone else having problems syncing photos through iTunes with the new firmware? I have my photos checked, but iTunes simply won't sync them (despite a brief message saying "Syncing Photos").
