Is this likley to be released soon or will it be in the summer when a new phone might be released?

The new GAAP rules just made it so that you can hold back reporting a smaller amount of revenue; they didn't didn't actually say that you don't have to hold back any at all. Clearly, going forward, any new sales can take advantage of the new rules to allow them to show a balance sheet that's closer to reality.

But are those GAAP changes automatically retroactive? That is to say, we're talking about devices that were sold more than 2 years ago, and by now their held back revenue has already made it off the books. Would Apple be able to just arbitrarily start applying the new rules to old sales that happened several years ago, with no explanation for what had come before? Or would they have to submit revised financial statements for the last few years to change their accounting of the amount of revenue they'd held back?

I wish I could tell you but I am not a CPA or CFO lol. Also, I thought the GAAP changed so that they can now report ALL revenue upfront immediately and not withhold ANY!

1) By REAL network I assume you mean one that can handle simultaneous voice/data and has the fastest 3G speeds, like AT&T?

No, the one that actually has coverage for you know.... the things people use phones for. Or have you forgotten what that is.

But I forgot, iPhone junkies just go off topic.

2) Yeah, totally, the iPhone has a monopoly on shattered screens. Oh, wait:

Um.... yes they do! Last time I checked it was $200 to fix an iPhone, even if it's not the screen.

3) By 1997 tyco toy I believe you're referring to Windows Mobile 6, which was seemingly released sometime around 1997?

Troll Different.

No especially since I never mentioned anything about Windows Mobile 6 or Windows, or Microsoft in my post.

It must be great not having anything to actually talk about.

That new Apple kool-aid any different for ya?

Let's cut the crap... how about you discuss how Apple's late-to-the-market multitasking is going to try to differentiate itself from the Pre. Or it's 1997 single app or home screen UI could be improved... or what other improvements Apple could make. Let's try that instead of shoving words in people's mouths and forcing Steve Balmer fantasies on those that have legitimate issues with the iPhone.

What about the following:

- Full quality in the YouTube app on 3g cellular (remove the AT&T limit not valid in Europe)
- A common file system for sharing data between apps (or more apps that uses the Dropbox API)
- Indication of accumulated 3g cellular download in the status area in the top of the screen
- Fast on/off of 3g cellular
- Flash support...
- Go to end of long page in Safari

I don't agree with all your points but please deliver "Go to end of long page in Safari" - it's probably my only issue with the iPhone - bugs the hell outta me.

Let me join the gang here with my demands :)

1. Scrollbar for pages (in any app where applicable). --Use quickscroll from Cydia
2. Quick enable disable 3G, Airplane, Wifi, GPS etc. etc. --Use SBSettings from Cydia
3. Save all Files from email attachments. --Use Attachment Saver from cydia.
4. Download files from Safari. I think Apple won't do this --Use Safari download manager from cydia.
5. Background app management/Quick switching -- Use ProSwitcher from cydia.
6. Let all Music Apps (Pandora, Last.fm,Slacker etc.) share the double ipod controls --Use MusicControls from Cydia
7. App management/categorization (User categories from cydia)
8. Use Physical Volume button up/down to forward/previous track for music apps. --Use Volume Music Control (Only for iPod but works great)
9. OS Level default pin locking for each app. User will decide to enable or disable it. --iProtect from cydia.
10. Non-disruptive notification methodology -- Many apps in cydia. No app is perfect!

:)

I am sure apple won't even fulfill 50% of my dreams :(

The user interface will no way get a complete overhaul.
If anything, some glossy UI improvements like iTunes 9 came with.
I like it how it is now, easy to navigate, but still.. small changes
never hurt anyone... actually I take that back since I'm posting on MacRumors.

any guess to purchase price?

$10...$20?
Free for owners of supported iPhones (3G and 3GS).

$9.99 for second and "third" (late 2009) generation iPod touches.

Not supported/not available for 1st generation iPhones and iPod touches. If I am wrong and Apple continues to support the first generation handhelds, then both of them would slot in their respective pricing categories (free/$9.99).

It is simple and easy to navigate, but it's by no means the best it ever will be.

It reminds me of the first Zunes to hit the market. Everyone bashed them and compared them to the iPod then called them massive failures, but few ever picked one up and used it. The UI in the Zune was MUCH better than the one on the iPod, even today.

The iPhone is getting the same treatment. The UI was great 2 years ago, destroyed the competition, but now the comp has caught up and dominates. The best thing for the iPhone is iTunes, Mobile Me (for those that love it) and the App Store. The device itself is moot.

And how did Microsoft respond?

They end-of-lifed the entire line and released one replacement product, the Zune HD, but cut back distribution to the United States. A strategy for building marketshare? Or a reflection of how Joe Consumer views the viability of Zune?

I am interested to hear your thoughts as I am a MSFT stockholder and would like to see increased shareholder value. Perhaps you could give Microsoft senior management some tips.

so with the new OS 4.0 will the phone layout look the same as now and run different with multitasking, background apps etc or will it look a bit different?

A 4th generation product is a reasonable point to draw a line in the sand for backwards compatibility especially with contract upgrades being offered every 2 years. I'm sure there are still lots of iPhone 2G users but I bet many of them are hand-me-downs to people who aren't super concerned about having the latest & greatest -- otherwise they'd just spend $99/$199 and get a new model.

Great news if true, and not a moment too soon. I have been patiently awaiting backgrounding and multi-tasking, it would be nice to pause a game of peggle and jump on to email and back to peggle without waiting for the whole thing to reload from scratch. Also some navigation enhancements along with a customizable at-a-glance home screen (think weather, stock, messages, fed-ex deliveries, calendar, date and time, facebook, etc) would also be most welcome :D

Isn't it time we finally move past the folders analogy? How many folders have you put in your pocket lately? How long do we have to continue replicating the archaic paper office methodology on our electronic devices? Forever?

How many shirts, socks, ties pens, paper clips etc do you put in your pocket? That stuff gets stored some how. When you have alot of the same thing, you tend to need to store it some how.

What would you suggest on how to manage alot of the same thing? If the idea is good I am all for no folders.

The folder architecture is too limiting. One parent folder for each app? I'd prefer something like Gmail's labels where you can assign as many labels as you want and then filter by them. That way I can have a currency convertor and add a label to it called tools, another label called travel and a third called all apps and then choose the view that is appropriate for the task at hand. :)

Im glad its going to work on old model phones. that way I can test it out on my old 3G to see if its worth buying a new phone. I think it will be, otherwise ill buy an ipod nano and a regular cellphone.

  • iSlate
  • iPad
  • iEtch
  • iSketch
  • iScribble
Thumbs up. Thumbs down. My "eyes" are getting crossed with all the speculation!

  • MacBook Touch
Done.

I feel your pain, though MacBook suggests it would come with OSX. I haven't seen anything suggesting it's a Mac.

What I'd lve to see is a way to respond to a text from the notification window without leaving what I'm doing.

Lime light

This is great news. Now how about a new physical iPhone to go along with it...

I doubt Apple need to do this. Plus there's a danger a simultaneous release with the iPad would rob the new model of its own lime light.

anyone elses 3g run slow? many times i start up an app and there is probably a 5 second lag till i can actually start typing. even after that, the typing isn't exactly synced up.

My jailbroken 3G gets boggy now and then. I do a hard reset and all is well. (Press and hold sleep and home buttons until display goes dark; phone will reboot, which might take a couple minutes).

Anyone else hate the names that people are using for the tablet? Honestly, iSomething is kinda overkill on these products. Can't we just call it the Apple Slate or Apple Tablet? The current use of iSomething is fine with Apple's current product line but enough already.

That said. Woooohoo! Can't wait to see what comes out.
I really want Apple to FINISH the 64bit apps. Not getting a 64bit iTunes this last year was a little sad given all the SL 64bit hype. Give me iLife '10 in full 64bit and new features too! :p
