No more beta firmwares for me. Damn buggy, all the way up to the last one.

Unfortunately, from the way it sounds... "sneak peek" sounds like we're not going to have the real deal until the next-gen iPhone comes out in, say, June.

Junes not that long to wait - here's hoping that OS 4.0 really gives the 'copy cats' the need to copy.

So, with the iPad release out of the way, here we come.... Hopefully we will also get the new MBPs, and that 27" ACD.

Are you sure? I thought it was a "portable" not necessarily a mobile device.

I think if they want to show the distinction they should do:
Mac OS X Desktop
Mac OS X Server
Mac OS X Touch

Yes. At the iPad announcement they touted themselves as the largest mobile device company. They included their laptops in the claim.

I think we all recall when Apple took "iPhone" and Cisco took issue. Yeah, "iOS" will be a smack in the back of Cisco's head again.
I would think Cisco would fight this considering every (I guess not counting the Linksys stuff) networking device they sell uses IOS.
Considering the 3GS was such a modest "upgrade," I think this year Apple will really step it up. Not to mention Steve said it will be an A+ update. So yes, I'd wait.

I find it odd that people don't consider the 3GS a major upgrade. Apple did, otherwise wouldn't it just be iPhone 1,3 (like how the 3G is iPhone 1,2)?

Something tells me this wont run on the first iPhone, possibly not the iPhone 3G either, in which case I'm out of luck but that's okay because I'm defiantly getting the next iPhone.

Cool! I hope it doesn't slow my iPhone gen 1 to a crawl.

I'm intrigued to know if the first gen will get the new OS. Last year I kind of thought OS 3 would be our last look in.

Thinking about it, I'm fairly happy with my iPhone's OS right now. Admittedly jailbreak tweaks are a big part of that (kirikae is a nice multitasking solution, SBSettings is awful handy and biteSMS is simply outstanding).

All I'd really like is flash, simply for streaming the odd show, but with bbc iPlayer I can usually find something to watch anyway. I only ever watch TV on it when I can't sleep anyway.

Or I'd like the youtube app to include ALL videos, that'd be awesome. But I'm actually fairly satisfied, is this a macrumors first? :p

I'll be pleasantly surprised if we get the new OS (and it doesn't run horribly)

I think 3.2 was just a stop gap measure for iPad only. iPhone and iPad will get 4.0 when its released.

Bingo.

Anyway, my 2 cents:

Apple is NOT going to majorly overhaul the UI. Look at OS X. 10.0 -> 10.6 has seen tons of refinements to the UI - ditching the stripes, getting rid of the menubar corners & making it transparent, changing how tabs look, etc. - but they haven't totally redone the UI. For one, it'll confuse a lot of people if the interface was to suddenly wildly change one day, and beyond that, Apple chose the original UI for a reason, because it's intuitive.

I do believe, however, we will see 2 major things with 4.0:

- A major overhaul of the home screen, possibly to support multitasking but mainly because 20 pages of apps is a nightmare. I think we may see the introduction of categories or some such and a new method of navigating through apps, perhaps like webOS. The next iPhone's screen is probably going to be larger as well, so expect some new graphics to take advantage of that. Perhaps background images like on the iPad.

- A brand spankin' new App Store, fully matured with sections for all the segments of the market (iPod, iPhone, iPad). Something more like Steam.

Lastly, I'm hoping both the iPhone and iPad get USEFUL locked screens, and an overhaul of the notification system, preferably something like webOS or Android where there is a 'system tray' that tells you what's up, instead of annoying modals.

Hopefully this includes 'support' for higher resolution screens. I could do without multitasking if there was some way to preserve the state of an app and pick up at that same point when one came back to it.

Multi-tasking getting announced Thursday? (Kevin Rose tweet)

Retweet, actually.

Multitasking!!! RT: iPhone OS 4.0 announcement on Thursday, I'll be there! (via @Ryan)

I have been thinking the same thing since they introduced the iPad and confirmed it would run iPhone OS. The OS is for 3 platforms now and should be called something else... not sure about iOS but it would be fitting I suppose... most likely, they will just keep calling it iPhone OS though to avoid confusing their largest user base (iPhone users).

The only problem with continuing calling it the iPhone OS is that it undermines the other platforms that they might choose to expand it to.

The primary feature of this iteration of OSX is that its designed for a touch interface. Though touch OS 4 or something sounds pretty crap.

I keep getting the feeling Apple is waiting for the community to help define its name. In a similar way they let Jaguar become the official name of 10.2, simply because it was an internal codename which was so ubiquitous in public use.

I don't know. It definitely needs re-branding though.

I could see iBooks, wallpaper backgrounds and multitasking in this next OS...would love to see the dock image changed.

Announcement predictions:
1) iPhone runs OS 3.1.3 and iPad runs 3.2. These will be re-united and both will run 4.0.
2) Both will get multitasking, unified mailbox, useful lock screen.
3) iPhone will get UISplitScreenController (iPad view with list on left side, details on right side, ex. as in Mail app)
4) iPhone will get front facing camera
5) Both will get iChat
6) Next iPad will get front facing camera.

Hopefully this includes 'support' for higher resolution screens. I could do without multitasking if there was some way to preserve the state of an app and pick up at that same point when one came back to it.

Every program has the capability to save their state upon program exit. It's up to the programmer to implement this ability in their program.

Game Overrrrrrrrrrr! I mean we're still on the iPad high, now here comes the sugar rush as the icing on the cake.....I can hardly contain myself. This is exciting news! Looking forward to big things on Thursday :D:D

But how could the iphone get multitasking when the ipad doesn't have it? or will there be an update for the ipad as well

Something tells me this wont run on the first iPhone, possibly not the iPhone 3G either, in which case I'm out of luck but that's okay because I'm defiantly getting the next iPhone.

I have a feeling about this too. the 3GS and likely new iPhone will be more powerful and have more ram for things that get introduced with OS 4.0.
