Announcement predictions:
4) iPhone will get front facing camera
5) Both will get iChat
6) Next iPad will get front facing camera.

They won't announced 4 or 6, because it's hardware related. This is purely about the OS. Also, it would probably negatively impact sales of the iPad if it became very clear that the v2 iPad would definitely have a front-facing camera. (Even though that's very, very likely.)

They won't announce 5, because it's just an app — and because it would give away 4 and/or 6.

I think you're right that we'll get these things, but I think we're more likely to see some evidence of video mentioned in the SDK than to have them mention it — and we've already had that in 3.2, actually.

If the next iPhone gets a forward-facing camera, you can bet your ass the next iPad will have it, though. We'll know in June/July.

Is it possible Apple rushed this to kill the hype surrounding the HTC EVO?

I doubt it. Apple doesn't react to competitors' announcements.

What I'm curious about is whether we'll see the next gen iPhone at this event. IIRC, previews of 2.0 and 3.0 did not coincide with announcements of the 3G and 3GS.

More than multitasking, more than any new feature, all I want is a way to lock orientation!! Especially for Safari!!
The new iPhone may or may not have a physical button (like the iPad) that does it, but for the first three iPhone models, users need a way in settings to turn off landscape orientation!!
That would work. If you hold down the iPad's volume button it silences the iPad. They could do that for the iPhone then make the vibe switch a screen lock

Wow. Makes you wonder what is in the works considering that they just dropped the iPad. I wonder if they will shutup all the negative people that complained about lack of certain features.
No, they won't.

This won't add Flash, or a camera to the existing iPad.

(Not that I give a damn about Flash, or that I particularly care about the lack of a camera. I carry a real camera with me most places, and have a laptop with a webcam that I never use.)

First the iPad release now this! I'm just hoping for multitasking and a new way to organize apps. This UI is starting to look tired.

Does anyone think the phone prior to the 3G are even capable of multitasking, etc? Just wondering if they have the ability to handle the processes.

I'm hoping for a professional looking (or at least a customizable enough system to make one ourselves) active standby screen. You know, the feature that's on every other smartphones out there.

does get frustrating while watching something in bed and you lean over and the screen changes on ya.

Apple on Thursday will preview the next-generation iPhone operating system, just a few days after the launch of the iPad tablet, which also runs on the OS.

The company on Tuesday sent out invitations for an event that will provide a "sneak peek of the next generation of iPhone OS software." The event will be at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Rumors about a new iPhone OS started spreading in early January, with speculation that a new iPhone would launch at a Jan. 27 event. However, a new OS was not announced.

Apple's last major iPhone OS update was in March 2009, when it previewed the iPhone 3.0 OS, which was ultimately released in June last year. The OS included more than 100 new features, including cut and paste, landscape mode for key applications, push notification, peer-to-peer Bluetooth-based multiplayer gaming, multimedia message service (MMS), and the ability to take voice memos.

It's surprising that they're only giving the press 3 days to prepare for the event.

If I had to guess the rush about this may be that the iPad reviewers main complaint was the lack of multitasking and Apple wants to remove this issue while the iPad is still a hot item.

I hope multi-tasking just isn't restricted to the iPad.

For the sake of Apple keeping in touch with the competition, I hope v4 offers big changes, such as better home screen organization.

I'm also hoping for the ability to side load your own applications, rather than having to give Apple $99 for the privilege. However, this hope is pure fantasy.

Good point, this might sway those that are on the fence, just in time for the 3G /WiFi launch.
So then what would the hater go after?

iPhone wouldn't make as much sense, but since it's the same OS, the feature would be good for touch and iPad.

More for the iPad, so that two people can check their own private email accounts on the same iPad that sits on the coffee table they share

If you really think about it, all you need is to be able to open two applications at the same time. You have push notifications for things like messengers, and small form notifications. But really you just need the ability to open Pandora and Safari, or Last.FM and a game. It doesn't need to have Pandora, Last.FM, Safari, and a game running in the background at the same time.
