Believe it or not a lot of signing is actually done with only one hand, especially nowadays where so many things, not just signing are being shortened

Ah, I didn't know that. In that case, this would be awesome for deaf people.

Open mouth, insert foot.

So in addition to texting and talking, people will soon be video conferencing while driving. At least we'll be able to see their expressions when they get into an accident.

There's only one reference to voice input, and that's merely given as an example of "other applications that may be stored in memory."

I sure hope voice dialing is in there.

Everyone knows it is coming...why not just announce it and release it tomorrow?

I want my damn iPhone!!!!!

I'd love to see instant messaging (MSN) built in, but I don't have high hopes for it. Even "full" OS X can't use it without third-party software so I don't expect to see it in iPhone OS :(

Steve Jobs sent a text to US Patent.

"Ok. Release filing, 5.4.3.2...NOW!"

nano model? heh, that'd be sweet! I love the iphone and all, but i'll never buy a phone this big again...such a pain to carry around...

WHy do people keep saying the iPhone is so big? What's big about it? It's less than half an inch thick, not that much taller than a deck of cards and doesn't even take up a whole pocket. I don't get it...

on the website, my computer wont display any of the images....how can i see the drawings/images with the patent, like the one shown in this MR post

sorry if this is a nooby question....

Who can say . . UMPC's LOL.

If you look at the image in the patent the notable Applications I see are...

GPS Module(136)
Video Conference Module(139)
Instant Messaging Module(141)
Blogging Module(143)
Search Module(151)

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Oh and

"an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user's image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display"
and thats a quote from the patent

and

[0121]The GPS module 135 determines the location of the device and provides this information for use in various applications (e.g., to telephone 138 for use in location-based dialing, to camera 143 and/or blogger 142 as picture/video metadata, and to applications that provide location-based services such as weather widgets, local yellow page widgets, and map/navigation widgets).

[0142]Examples of other applications 136 that may be stored in memory 102 include other word processing applications, JAVA-enabled applications, encryption, digital rights management, voice recognition, and voice replication.

[0145]In conjunction with RF circuitry 108, audio circuitry 110, speaker 111, microphone 113, touch screen 112, display controller 156, optical sensor 164, optical sensor controller 158, contact module 130, graphics module 132, text input module 134, contact list 137, and telephone module 138, the videoconferencing module 139 may be used to initiate, conduct, and terminate a video conference between a user and one or more other participants.

[0151]In conjunction with touch screen 112, display controller 156, contact module 130, graphics module 132, audio circuitry 110, and speaker 111, the video player module 145 may be used to display, present or otherwise play back videos (e.g., on the touch screen or on an external, connected display via external port 124).

[0157]In conjunction with touch screen 112, display system controller 156, contact module 130, graphics module 132, and text input module 134, the search module 151 may be used to search for text, music, sound, image, video, and/or other files in memory 102 that match one or more search criteria (e.g., one or more user-specified search terms).

Apparently you're another one of those limited few who haven't tried sticking it in your ear. :p

Ok so iPhone 2's main features will be: Camera Picture and Video recording with publications to "services" (mobile me?), Video conferencing with multiple people (it says it!!), GPS, oh yeah and EDGE + 3G. It's a good time to sell now, guys.

Either way, easy to understand Apple's paranoia, subject to them protecting their developer ecosystem.

Maybe they are just trying to protect themselves from information-hungry, rumor-mongers like us! (aka ... those who can't wait patiently until they release their new products)

Different Patent App..

I found the article

http://gizmodo.com/382620/iphone-in...nts-to-upcoming-mms-background-ims-gps-module

See this patent was filed in very early March, what is different this time around that is something brand new?

If you look at the numbers, that looks like a different patent application and according to the write-up on gizmodo pertains to the Chat portion primarily.

I also noticed in this one that the dates on many of the ones it cross-references are late June 2007...

It seems the video conferencing is the ONLY thing the original version of the iPhone won't be able to do... the rest can come in a software update.
That's what I'm counting on, too. Most of the improvements that I'm looking forward to have to do with the new OS and shouldn't require a hardware upgrade.

Patents are less about protection from rumor-mongering and more about one of two things:
  1. Protection from getting sued (or a horse trade against someone else's patent).
  2. A mechanism to block competitors or monetize as a toll road by suing or threatening to sue others.

In the post I referenced earlier, I suggested a path that reconciles both considerations.
