I think that this iPhone will pretty much be perfect. The only things people will be able to ask for are improvements like more storage, battery life ect. All the things you could ask for, like video conferencing, camera on the front, GPS and everything will be on it. Plus all the applications you can dream of will be on iTunes. This is just brilliant.

huh? whats an iPhone?
/stupidity!

Better be available in Canada from the get go...!

UH...you wouldn't get a patent application then release something the following week. Common sense?

Talk about leaving other phones manufacturers in the dust ;)

Future plans?

When discussing the optical sensor (AKA camera) it lists three possibilities:

In some embodiments, an optical sensor is located on the back of the device 100, opposite the touch screen display 112 on the front of the device, so that the touch screen display may be used as a viewfinder for either still and/or video image acquisition. In some embodiments, an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user's image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display. In some embodiments, the position of the optical sensor 164 can be changed by the user (e.g., by rotating the lens and the sensor in the device housing) so that a single optical sensor 164 may be used along with the touch screen display for both video conferencing and still and/or video image acquisition.

The first sounds like the current iphone, the second probably the iphone2 and then the third a rotating sensor...maybe a future iphone?

Will the iPhone be able to do all those things on Edge? In the picture it shows the E which makes me think that they could have put in video conferences in the current version of the iPhone.

There is always WiFi, so I don't see why they couldn't include it...if it's available. BUT the patent list video conferencing for the device with the camera on the front, so...probably not.

Patents are less about protection from rumor-mongering and more about one of two things:
  1. Protection from getting sued (or a horse trade against someone else's patent).
  2. A mechanism to block competitors or monetize as a toll road by suing or threatening to sue others.

In the post I referenced earlier, I suggested a path that reconciles both considerations.

Mark

I understand that. I believe I was referencing the non-release of information on patents until just before a product is released to maintain the secrecy / surprise of a new product. If I failed to make the point clear, I apologize.

... we're all so happy for you, but for people who have problems, your post is useless. How about some tips next time.
If it helps, almost everyone I have seen have trouble with the iPhone keyboard are (like myself) older folks who think they know best. Personally, I was trying very hard to hit the right keys all the time which actually is the wrong way to use it.

It really is true that if you follow the directions and just poke away without really looking too close, that the iPhone will correct all your mistakes and magically turn garbage into prose.

If you ignore the directions and patiently try to hit the right keys in succession, you will eventually get fast enough to plod through some messages, but you will never get as fast as someone just poking away without worrying about it.

It's kind of funny when you think about it. All those years we were so concerned with keyboard ergonomics and what is the best type. Turns out, you could have a keyboard on a cookie or the size of a thumbtack, and with the right software it can still be quite useable.

I could've sworn I saw this posted here - a massive patent manifesto with Steve listed as inventor, etc. Though I can't find it now. Isn't this from that document? From a couple days ago?

I only ask because I want to know if this is new or not and if I should read it.

I'd love to see instant messaging (MSN) built in, but I don't have high hopes for it. Even "full" OS X can't use it without third-party software so I don't expect to see it in iPhone OS :(
Well, *if* video conferencing is in the 2.0 iPhone, it will pretty much have to be iChat.

Now they wouldn't do that unless iChat was going to get a bit of an overhaul as it's considered fairly lame right now by most users.

So it all hinges on whether the hardware for video conferencing is actually in the new iPhone. If it is, you can probably expect that it *will* be able to access other protocols like MSN because to not do so would be pretty lame.

Either that or something about it will be so cool it will be worth leaving MSN chat for, just like the iPhone was so cool people were willing to leave their carriers and join (Yuck!) AT&T.

:)

isnt canada the code name for nintendos next gen project, the one that runs supper cool. :p
No it's the much bigger country right above the USA that burned the White House to the ground the last time they pissed us off.

You don't want to make us angry again.

NO. It's called Wifi and it's immensely faster than edge or 3g.

These patents are 3 months old, they are picking up steam now for some odd reason.....
