But why is everyone so excited and assuming the 3g will have all this and this isn't a future thing?

Does this mean that the 2.0 software update will include AIM for the old first gen iphones?!!

Exactly, the patent from march and this patent are VERY similar, almost identical. I think Apple would need all of that sutff in there to really get the iPhone moving internationally, but I highly doubt it.

I really hope they have an iphone model without the video conferencing, unless its a free addition to the unlimited data of the iphone plans. I dont want to pay extra for a feature im never going to use. All I can say to the video recording is YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't want it to be an additional charge for video conf. either if not everyone had a new iphone too...

Imagine a device, that can replicate any device .

Now you're talking Matrix stuff. Although, if Apple keeps coming up with devices like the iPhone (things we could only dream of 5-10 years ago), we might be headed in that direction.

No it's the much bigger country right above the USA that burned the White House to the ground the last time they pissed us off.

You don't want to make us angry again.

You guys weren't even a country then, so it wasn't technically "Canada" that burned the White House, it was the British and their Canadian colonies.

That would be like saying the USA won the French and Indian War.

And you're not "much bigger". 60,000 square miles. That's like the size of Wisconsin. Besides, most of that land is uninhabited cold wilderness.

I would pay BIG bucks to download an AIM app that would stay connected in the background while I did other things!

They have Web AIM now (such as meebo or w/e) but as soon as you navigate to a new page it disconnects..

How else do we communicate? By signing and watch others sign...I'm superEXCITED about this video conferencing feature and I just know millions of deaf people will buy this iPhone!

Wow! There's a use I never thought of! Apple usually takes the extra step to satisfy special needs-- let's hope they do in this case.

If you look at the image in the patent the notable Applications I see are...

GPS Module(136)
Video Conference Module(139)
Instant Messaging Module(141)
Blogging Module(143)
Search Module(151)

HOLY CRAP!!!!!

Oh and

"an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user's image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display"
and thats a quote from the patent

What makes people think that all this is free?

Apple is releasing an App Store.
Don't people think Apple will have some shiny new apps to SELL to everyone on Monday? Apps like Video Chat, GPS, Blogging, Spotlight, IM...

At $20 per pop, you do the math.
Also, to those that say that Apple just lumps everything into a patent to protect itself- it doesn't mean it is coming. Why, then, wasn't all this in the original iPhone patent from last year?

No way

nano model? heh, that'd be sweet! I love the iphone and all, but i'll never buy a phone this big again...such a pain to carry around...

Maybe it's because I went from hauling a treo around to sliding this beaut in and out of my pocket, but you are nuts if you have a hard time carrying an iPhone around. :D

oooooh my gawd!!!

if anyone read the entire patent....u would see that there is a segment that talks about pinching and un pinching objects to see them better (zoom) and a few different ways to communicate through touch and movements and certain amounts of fingers alter your communication with the iphone

which means this iphone is an intro to the touch screen world

well another step.....like the one said to be in windows 7 and that apple is trying to get to.....

:apple:MG!

No, I hope that Apple will kill AOL-Support in iChat and .mac and offers just Jabber.

AOL, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Skype = crap
Jabber = the only solution (also for the enterprise).

You're right and I agree... I use that with people I network with and friends (now in form of Google Talk but other Jabber clients work great of course) but girlfriend, clients, rest of world all use the rest of the crap.

I still would like to know why everyone is assuming all these things will be released next week. Just because the proactively? patented everything doesn't mean it'll be released now.

I hope everyone isn't going to be dissapointed.

This argument would have made sense if Apple listed all these things on the original iPhone patent. But they didn't- so why did they wait until now?

If they were all about proactively patenting, they'd have included all this and more last year.

Maybe, maybe not. I still say it doesn't confirm anything. I'm just banking on 3g and anything above that will be bonus. Then I can't be dissapointed.

two questions:

1. has anyone heard/read anything about voice dialing?
2. would video conferencing include iphone to pc/mac or just phone to phone?

obviously no one knows the answers for sure, but any thoughts would be great. thanks

Well, *if* video conferencing is in the 2.0 iPhone, it will pretty much have to be iChat.

I don't care about video (my iPod has no camera), I'm just thinking about text. At the moment I can use Meebo, but it "ties up" the system; I can't browse websites and receive messages in the background.
