Does not appear to be opinion:
Apple has a really hard time making SE bread and butter model.
Being in court has nothing to do with it.
If you make a statement with no substantiation, expect someone may call you on it.
If someone has a problem with that, blanket statements should be avoided.

HURRAY!!!

The current iPhone SE looks much like the iPhone 5s, including its smaller four-inch display preferred by a subset of customers.

It is secretly preferred by ALL customers. Only a subset are open about it. :D

Good idea to update the SE but definitely would have been better with A11. Seems like they had overstock of A10 or figured out a way to manufacture it for less, and then decided to update the SE instead of developing a proper road map for the device. Just what it sounds like, might not be true

The plus side of the using the A10 is that all of the bugs will have been worked out. The downside of course is that it would get obsoleted a year sooner. I would prefer an SE with A10 over any other iPhone model.

The 2013 Moto X and G weren't very big but still featured a 4.5" or 4.7" display, respectively. Then after 2014, every Moto G or X got bigger. So we're only left with Sony doing it for Android with their Xperia Compact series and the current SE line for iOS.

I don't mind phablet size and will probably revert back to that size once my eyes get weaker and I become more far sighted. I've been nearsighted since I was 13. But I haven't gotten there yet and these companies need to give us more size options. Not just 90% favoring 5.5" and bigger displays and gimping the smaller models.

Apple's current mindset -
BIGGER = BETTER = MORE $$$$

At least Apple and Sony haven't forgotten the little guys.

I feel bad for the 4.7" iPhone owners that get hosed every year. They get treated like Jan Brady. Middle child syndrome.

Same ppi as SE
Same amount of RAM as SE
Neither have Telephoto
Worse battery life than SE
More expensive than SE

Only advantage the 6s truly had over the SE is better front camera and newer Touch ID. The SE is more powerful than the 6 and 6 Plus and is still cheaper!

X owners better enjoy having the flagship product for another 10 months. The X2 Plus model is the one Apple is going to give all the extra perks to like more RAM and longer battery life.

I like the small phone market to be niche and make the SE the MacBook Air among iPhones. Like Chinese food, cheap, fast, and good! Apple won't get so greedy and price it accordingly to its (un)popularity which is just about right at under $400-$500.

I plan to use compact phones until I hit my 40's in a few years if my vision gets weaker and need reading glasses. Apple hasn't forgotten about us! Yay!

I drive a 1957 Corvette. I guess that means I look like I'm way behind the times and need to upgrade to a Toyota Prius or I'm lame. :D
Now that is a comment i can love. Some on this forum have no respect for classic design.

For example my iPhone 4 is a great little device. The only good reason to seek an update is performance. The problem of course then becomes physical size.

The iPhone 5 outdoes the 4. It is only slightly bigger but a lot lighter. So it actually feels a lot better in the hand.

Apple still wants to hold on to a budget iPhone and maintain the thickness...

No problem with that. People thought the Macbook Air would die as well, but Apple is still selling it :)

That was the purpose of it. It's provide a breadth to the iPhone line that lets Apple compete more effectively in markets that are more price sensitive, without surrendering what makes an iPhone an iPhone.

This is also for those people who are still using their phones primarily for calls and messaging and don't really care too much about apps - those people do not need a screen the size of a helicopter landing pad.

What you’re describing is no longer a $349 iPhone. With an A10 and minimal other changes, like maybe TouchID 2, the price could even go down.

You can’t expect flagship features at $349. The iPhone 8 is $699, and using a slightly smaller display isn’t somehow going to knock the price in half.
I think by spring of next year, an SE 2 could easily have the A11, Touch ID 2 (maybe solid state), the cameras at least from the iPhone 7, and ip67 rating. Offer it in 64GB and 128GB. That would be a solid phone that would last 3-4 years worth of software updates. An SE 2 released with an A10, assuming such a phone is released in the Spring 2018, would mean it would be using a chip over 18 months old. The SE uses an A9 which when release wasn’t just 6 months old. I don’t expect Apple to use the A10.

The why would be because the Indian government gives foreign companies a very hard time in selling their products in India unless there’s something ‘in it’ like local manufacturing for them. Not making a judgement on whether that’s good or bad, but it’s the most likely reason.
I doubt that's the true reason, to me it's more greed from Apple's side.
Why Samsung has no problem selling their products in India then? their products are made in Korea,Vietnam,Indonesia and some in China (depending on the product)..not in India..or others for that matter..Can't imagine India not allowing Microsoft Surface tablets and Laptops there either..

Budget iPhone maybe.... but publicly supporting "thickness" at Apple in 2017 is a fireable offense. If this actually sees the light of day ( WITH a headphone jack ) i will buy it. Not holding my breath though as long as Ive is in control.

Wow, they really must have had a lot more iPhone 5s parts laying around than i thought!!

But when it was released, it really wasn’t THAT much cheaper than a 6S (understandably). It’s just “budget” now because of the price reduction, which happened because the internals are now so old. I don’t really expect an upgraded iPhone SE2 to be as cheap as it is now.

Around 4 months ago, I bought my wife a new iPhone SE. It’s old, but she loves it. :)

I chose the SE over the iPhone 6S because it’s smaller and had better battery life!! After 1.5 years, the battery life is still great.

I’m going to keep it until Apple releases an updated version. I wouldn’t buy an iPhone 8 with its reduced battery size. What was the point of doing that?!?

I don’t either. Even the original price for the iPhone SE wasn’t THAT much cheaper than the 6S. I chose the SE over the 6S because I preferred the form factor, not price.

People have been buying it based on price though. That can’t be argued. However, that’s more of a recent phenomenon due to the price reduction from Apple, and additional store discounts!!!

I Actually like the 5S form and size even though I am currently enjoying my iphone 7 that I replaced it with. I hope Apple continues the SE for some time. I kind of liked my old “no bells and whistles” 5s and would still be using it if I did not drop it in water...won’t say where I was... . You can probably guess....and people sometimes call it “The John”. . I think I was reading MacRumors at the time...

Lol classic! Plop plop fizz fizz ooh what a relief it is! ;)

I too loved the 5S form factor and design. Even when larger 5”+ screens began to flourish the market worldwide the 5S held its own quite well.

It's going to look more like a iPhone 8 mini with 7 specs. Have a glass back for wireless charging. Got to use 7's SoC to keep the price low.

Been clamouring for this in the boards for almost a year now!
A10 cpu
M10 microprocessor for motion
3D Touch this should be a must
Touch ID (FaceID not until 2019 refresh when hardware dips to just under half the price and quadrouples in production numbers. Probably after iMac, MacBook lineup gets theirs implemented).
Design: more rounded to fall inline with its older siblings. Hopefully an iPhone 7 mini design and full case colours not this two tone second class citizen of design.
Bonus: wireless charging with a glass back if NOT all rounded would give it that iPhone 4/4S design appeal that I think a LOT would love globally.
IP67 rating would seal the deal quite incredibly.
Bluetooth 5
Airplay 2

If it had all of this with the 4” screen which the global market seems to still want I dare say I would transition from the 7 to it. Dare to consider that is.

12 pages of posts (and in such a short time). I just checked in and I have no interest in reading 12 pages worth of posts, so maybe there was an off-topic debate about Trump that got people sidetracked for 8+ pages, but if not, I think this shows that there's a ton of interest in a smaller iPhone.

And by "smaller", I really mean "perfectly sized for one-handed usage". I remember back in the day of owning a Motorola StarTac. Back then, phones got smaller and smaller. And the smallest ones were the most expensive ones. Granted, you just used them for phone calls. So I get that app usage makes larger screens more desirable. Still, smaller devices will always have the advantage of being more comfortably pocketable and easier to use one-handed.

Personally, I just "upgraded" from an iPhone 6s to an iPhone SE. Same functionality/guts but in a smaller device. I never felt "great" about my upgrade from my iPhone 5 to my iPhone 6. The larger screen was nice, and the rounded-edges made it feel more comfortable to hold naked (though, like many others, I was too worried about keeping it naked because it was so slippery, so I got a case which bulked it up and ruined that great out-of-the-box feeling). But while the upgraded features were nice, it was impossible to comfortably reach all corners of the screen. And the reachability functionality felt like a band-aid.

I lived with the 6. And even upgraded to the 6s. But by then the inexpensive (albeit contract-locked) upgrades from AT&T were gone, and I couldn't justify paying $600+ (or whatever it was) to move up to the 7, which just felt like another minor upgrade. Same for the 8. The X tempted me, but it bumped the device size up more, and I realized that what I really wanted was a device *smaller* in size...more like the 5.

So while I debated spending $1200 on an X w/AppleCare I spotted a post on a deal forum about getting an AT&T prepaid iPhone SE for $150. Supposedly, I could plug in my regular post-paid AT&T SIM and roll. So for $150, I figured "why not give this a shot and see if I really could be happy moving back down to a smaller-screened device."

I've been using it now for about 2 weeks. The smaller screen has taken some getting used to...primarily some "tappable things" can be harder to tap. But I think I'm pretty content. If Apple could deliver an X-style device (nearly edge-to-edge screen) in this size, I'd be pretty happy.

  1. same look but with rounded edges, basically just the same blanks running through a different CNC process so they can sell the same thing with a new flavor
  2. iPhone 8 color options
  3. no headphone jack
  4. improved screen, IPS LCD equal to the iPhone 8
  5. 640 x 1136 pixels
  6. static homebutton
  7. Force touch gimmick
  8. 600$

I present to you, the iPhone 8SE
