I’d be interested in this or getting the se after this comes out, compared to my android, I’m tired of google spying and lacking decent default apps. At least the iPhone has a good music player, email app all with a good ui and no ads. Android has a radio and an sd card but you can’t install much on the card, it doesn’t work like it used to you have to use the cloud on android, I’m sick of it, updates from google adding more spam and ads, a google search I can’t remove, notifications from google maps asking me to take photos of businesses for them

Bring on the se, old design or not

Want to see iOS update for SE.
Obviously SE screen is small so users can change size of app icons (currently 4 but 3 can be better for small screens).

There will be no X inspired SE model until X plus model in my opinion.

Nowadays, more people use camera function from their phones so camera improvements should be important from SE model.

would definitely get it if it comes out in those spec and looks like the design of current SE, never liked the round edges of 6/7

SE line is the best -

7 = $549, SE2 = $449
Small and compact
Long battery life
Likely gets wireless charging the 7 lacks
Only gets updated every two years so it doesn't give you an annual buyer's guilt trip

2016 - SE (looks like 5s)
2018 - SE2 (probably looks like 8)
2020 - SE3 (probably looks like X)

I will probably roll with a Sony next because I never owned a smartphone from them but once the SE3 gets released, I'm in.

By 2022, my vision gets so weak like my parents who both needed reading glasses by their 40's, I probably will revert back to a bigger display. My parents have perfect vision from far away. I'm the opposite. My vision is not legal enough to drive.

Circumstances always changes for everyone. We won't always have the same job, same health, same home, etc. Ability to adapt to changes. I have no hatred towards Plus models. Each size serves their purpose. In time, I will probably go back to that size.

For now, SE size for the rest of my 30's when my vision up close is still good. Then increase the font to the largest and screen size when I start to need reading glasses.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Apple has continued to "advance" iPhone design while continuing a line of phones that customers appreciate and are perhaps cheaper for Apple to manufacture.
As for the name, it is fine. You may link it to old computer names because you have that background information but many don't. Instead, others may read it as I do, iPhone SE(small edition).
I suggest you enjoy the tech and worry less about the names.
Five years on from iPhone 5, there's no doubt SE is entirely a cheap build for Apple that is sold at an artificially inflated price (just like iPad mini 4 which is old stock sold at artificially inflated pricing).
iPhone SE is complete laziness from a design focused company. And it's very disappointing.
The name is not fine. The SE enclosed in a box branding looks silly. ""Second Edition", "Small Edition", "System Expansion", "SE", they are all pointless.
One can both enjoy tech and also make a critical evaluations of something.

iPhone SE is actually thinner than iPhone X.
Exactly. iPhone X is not only supremely thicker but heavier.

This is fantastic news. I am completely happy with my X, but keeping a smaller form-factor phone available with up-to-date-ish specs, at less than half the price, is a really smart move. I personally know a large number of people who bought the SE instead of an Android.

In fact Apple and Sony are THE only smartphone manufacturers to create 4” phones and at that NOT crippled in performance or features like what samsung, LG, Huawei had down before.

PS: that’s odd, never typed that company before and yet my iPhone 7 autocorrected the spellin, hmmm.

Since iOS 11 made my 5S super slow and the battery drain fast I hope this comes true.

I think many of us across devices have found oddities in performance lagging or hiccups here and there with iOS 11. Refinements are coming.

I sure hope you're wrong. That means the SE2 will lose its best-for-one-handed-use status, at a minimum. The SE is a budget phone with baseline support for the current operating system, and it serves the need for compact phones. The 6-8 series phones are too big for those who prefer the SE now.

My guess is the SE2 case gets a slight redesign, probably dropping the headphone jack in the process, upgraded components, and the current SE continues on, sharing many of the same components, but with an older processor, and selling for around $199. The SE2 looks more like the current product line, continuing the baseline performance of the entry level 4.7" phone, while the SE will support basic functions with limited storage and power.

I don’t see the iPhone SE as a budget phone other than its price point. Performance features are quite good, not flagship but close. Opinions vary of course.

but the question is? do you still like the iMac design? because, like with the phones and any gadgets, you are impressed with the design, you like it, but in 3 months time you get so accustomed with it that you forget about it (if you protect it with a case - which is the case, design is over)... when you watch your screen, you don't look at the design of the hardware... software. like cars. people buy cars because of how they look outside. but you sit and drive inside ;-)

One reason I believe the iMac hasn’t evolved in design (both in shape and functional design) is its reached its pinnacle for an AIO (All-In-One). Competitors, many have tried and died in trying to uphend Apple as the king in AIO. Now even Apple has reached that “Fin” of its design and purpose. When working on an iMac the computer itself fades away:

The screen hovers directly in level with your head,
Keyboard is flat and low level with the table and keys require minimal force for rapid data entry,
Mouse / Track Oad is multi-touch so you can manipulate trajectory, focus, and navigation within the virtual plane with minimal effort yet with speed and accuracy : an actual dream for those of us whom are physically not or challenged or limited.

While the Surface desktop AIO is amazing and has great design - the beat challenge to Apple and the best combination of a touchscreen desktop computer for their purposes ... becomes limited at the hinges range of motion for those that are quadriplegic or have severe spinal chord injuries and thus cannot tilt heir neck downward even just 5 degrees. That’s surface AIO now becomes a waste because it’s best selling feature cannot be used. Alternatively many of us are not artists and thus not very enticing.

Enjoy living in the past. How’re your floppy and scsi drives?

Even the competition are further and further making phones without the headphone jack. And just one year using it as a selling point unapologetically.

Their realizing audio quality of wireless is gaining plus the added benefit of versatility. Moreover it’s allowing them immediate vertical sales into their own wireless headsets, less packaging costs with a wired headphone for a small fee models.

invest is wrongly used... invest is to put money into sth. that multiplies the money... an iPhone, a car will never be an investment (the value is depreciated out of the box)

Sorry to say that but it looks like you don't fully know what invest means. It's not exclusive to direct profitability or stockbroking. You invest in an expensive computer as you count on the work you can deliver with it, and aim to future proof it for years to come. For a phone? Yea maybe not so much.

I just say that, we over emphasise on design (and pay too much for it) and forget about the basic utility and functionality of the product (we start not to see the forest for the trees)... in our case, the hardware without software is just a brick... the problem with computers nowadays, with this type of architecture, have nowhere to evolve...

I disagree. It's Apple we're talking about. The same company that established its brand through design consciousness, attention to detail and marrying functionality with aesthetic appeal. The iMac G4 in particular is a classic example of that. And speaking of "computers nowadays", what MS has done with Surface Studio is pretty darn sweet, and proves there's still room to pivot and evolve in ways Apple simply doesn't feel like bothering anymore.

Steve Jobs, again, was right... an iPhone (portability, ease of access, one hand access in a split second in a tube, quick pictures when you move, split seconds to e-mail, music, web, maps and so on) should have the screen no more than 4" (a compromise - from 3.5")... for home, office, library, coffee shop etc buy a tablet or a laptop or a desktop... I want to keep my phone and operate it with ONE hand...

O tempora, o mores. 3.5" was good 10 years ago when it was unimaginable to add more screen estate. Apple could maintain the shell of a 5S, trim it down a notch (pun) and slap a larger screen on it. I'm sure Steve would approve. Though he would most likely be bored stiff, and much prefer coming up with the next best thing than tweaking 5-year old designs out of complacency.

You seemed to be unhappy with Apple's phone selection. Does anyone currently produce a phone that lives up to the standards you have not as of yet shared?
As to the "entirely cheap build" of the iPhone 5 design, if I am not mistaken, Apple spent a lot of money and engineering time to develop that phone. It was highlighted in the presentation when it came out as to the care and effort that went into the making of the phone. Just because it is an older design doesn't make it an "entirely cheap build."
Cost of the phone. Are Apple products more expensive? Yes. That doesn't mean they are being sold at an "artificially inflated price." Companies produce a good or service and offer it at a price they determine. If the product is deemed worth the price by the buying public then the product sells. It appears very clear, judging by phone availability, that Apple may even be under charging for the iPhone X. Apple stated that they were pleased by the iPhone SE sales so it would appear the public doesn't think that phone is being sold at an "artificially inflated price."
Design of the phone. You seem to think there is some crime against design in continuing to sell a line of phone, that still sells well enough to update. Apple didn't abandon design. Apple puts their time and money into their flagship phone, while still offering a quality designed phone at a reduced price. That is a win-win for all. While you express your disappointment in Apple I applaud them in keeping my favorite design at a reduced price. You know what that means? We have a difference of opinion. Your opinion is no better or worse than mine. The same goes for the SE naming. It doesn't bother me in the least.
Lastly, having a critical opinion doesn't mean you are correct, it just means you are critical.

If it looks like the iPhone 5 again, then that design won’t be dead until 2020. That’s insane!

If it ain't broke don't fix it! It's a flawless design that reached perfection with the SE. It's still the best design to date. The X and 8 are complete nonsense. Both are examples of poor design. The 5 was the last iPhone that Steve jobs had a part in creating. That's why it's still around today.

- you buy a car, a phone to help you achieve multiplication of money not directly, but as tools. they are an expense, depreciate in time, and the value needs to be recovered in accountancy. ok, if you like this term, no problem, use it.

- I didn't say design is not important, it is, but not the first thing. we go too much on design and less on functionality. functionality has to be always over design. MS concept is not new, it came into the market with the tablet Windows XP around 2002. iMacs are for every need, Surface "Studio", as in the title, aims for a particular market and need (not all of us are artists).

- iMac (current state) has 10 years of old design... still the best in AIO. as for me, my opinion is to give to people the same power on different screen sizes at different prices. the price differentiator for iPhones should not be the memory, but only the screen size, keeping the same profit margin (bigger screens = more materials, bigger logistics costs, production lines, bigger battery etc)... bigger iPhones = more expensive... then, everybody chooses without creating this social status based on how big is your screen... but, marketing is marketing :)

Supremely thicker... 0.1 mm is a supreme increase in thickness... Just stop talking.

Jack haters fail to understand that basically every professional audio product in the world has a headphone jack, and usually 1/4", even older than the 1/8" design. There's a reason they stuck around so long. Also, wireless audio simply can't compare to wired, it's a compromise. Personally, I'll take the simplicity and quality of a wired pair of headphones and earbuds any day. Honestly, the last time I used a bluetooth device was in the wireless headset days that made you look like you were talking to yourself. Bluetooth just eats up battery life and wireless accessories are another thing you have to charge.

This. Absolutely this phone. The premium build quality of the iPhone 5 & a full-face display sans the asinine notch is my DREAM phone come true. Too bad it will remain a fantasy render.

"Jack haters fail to understand that basically every professional audio product in the world has a headphone jack"

Jack proponents fail to understand that a smartphone is not a professional audio product, but if you're one of the few that wishes to use it as one, then you can use an adapter if you like.

"and usually 1/4"

Yeah, no smartphones ever had this anyway, and neither do they have XLR which is also on every professional audio product. Not that that matters anyway.

"also, wireless audio simply can't compare to wired, it's a compromise."

For now. Wired audio technology has plateaued, there's really nowhere it can go from here. Wireless however is still in it's infancy, and will match then surpass wired not long from now.

"Honestly, the last time I used a bluetooth device was in the wireless headset days that made you look like you were talking to yourself."

Yeah, Bluetooth has come along a lot in the last 10 years and is showing no signs of slowing down. Quite the opposite in fact.

Your "common sense" may differ from other peoples "common sense".
Common sense is not a measurable factor, and in your comment amounts to nothing more than an "anecdotal experience", which is meaningless.

You have nothing to back up the above.

No it's you who are left in the dark because you have no good info. I have been dealing with Apple since 1989, have over 12 macs for my personal use, have some of their vantage stuff that still works, have buddies who work in Apple as designers and devs and I'm pretty interconnected with the resellers and services to back up everything I have to say. Even in some countries where avg annual salary is miserable $5,000 regular iPhones outsell SE because there is not enough profit margin to push SE. You are more than welcome to find a proper Apple reseller and ask him how many SEs they have sold so far.

A couple POV anecdotes:

1) At the time I'm using 2 iPhones, 2 MacBook Pros, 1 iPad and 1 iMac. I don't see how a wireless pair helps interconnectivity between my devices, without having to unpair and re-pair whenever I need to switch audio source. It's stupid, unnecessary and user unfriendly to a fault

2) I LOVE my wireless JBL's for the gym & running, and wouldn't go back to corded microphonic hell for any reason (other than perhaps proven brain damage from exposure to BT frequencies). That being said, when I switch to my trusty Shure SE846 I immediately hear a world of difference, even if the input device is merely my phone. BT convenience? Yes. Sound quality? Still a long way to go.

3) Having to charge yet another thing? No thanks

4) I travel by plane almost weekly and need to charge & listen

5) The "wireless future" is still an exercise waiting to happen, making me wonder why did I ever have to put up with the compromises of the "new" MacBook Pro and iPhone 7 at all.

All in all, I don't really get all those defending Apple's "courage" (with some pretty insulting comments to boot) taking away a feature that provides cheap, simple, reliable, better sounding, and universal device-agnostic connectivity. You think it's all part of a grand future master plan, only to find out it's just Cook wanting to sell more AirPods and Beats X.

Do you really think Apple are willing to gamble 70% of their company in order to boost sales of a product that makes up likely less than 1% of their revenue?

Newsflash. Cook is already gambling 100% of his company by pushing out incomplete and/or self-cannibalising product lines with flailing software. Also, he knows the iPhone (the smartphone in general actually) has plateaued as a product category and sets his focus on services, accessories, dongles and other paraphernalia.

Now, if you feel like pointing out something from the rest of my comment above, be my guest.

70% that self-cannibalises itself is still 70% of the company, so we can ignore that. "services, accessories, dongles" make up 14%, but we are talking specifically about headphones.

Yes, I do. And I wouldn't discount the dongle-hell Apple has thrown up on the world as growing pocket money.
