Let us inject some facts into this. iPhone SE is based on the device shell of iPhone 5, back from 2012. To continue that would be very depressing for a company that supposedly prides itself on design.

Aside from that, the naming conventions are not simple nor elegant anymore. I always hated the name "SE". Yuck. It's a lazy throw back to old Apple Mac products where the "SE" is an acronym for "System Expansion". Based on that past, it could be called iPhone SE/2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_SE/30

The smaller (original sized) iPhone device should be designated "mini", "nano", "air" or similar which is most fitting considering the device is Apple's lightest iPhone. Or maybe just name it iPhone 1, 2 or 9 seeing we skipped those. o_O:rolleyes::eek::D

They may have painted themselves into a corner here... if they do include one, critics will accuse them of not packing that space with technology!
Or
"Apple tries to expand market share by offering a less expensive model that doesn't require the user to buy expensive wireless headphones…"

I think they absolutely are. This would be the perfect successor to my wife's iPhone SE.

I appreciate any update to the SE, but I agree the rumored specs are not very compelling. The A10 and the FaceTime camera are really the only improvements. The FaceTime camera is pretty minor to me, and how much better is the A10 than the no-slouch A9? And the battery might be a little bigger, but that doesn't necessarily mean better battery life, depending on other changes.

This update would be great for anyone jumping onto the SE from another phone, or an existing SE owner who REALLY wants a better face time camera, but for the remaining SE owners, it's not much of an upgrade to look forward to. Maybe in a year or two when the A9 starts to slow down, some may be looking for any speed improvement they can get, but by then I'd imagine the next update would be right around the corner.

Personally I would have additionally loved any of the following: storage increase, improved back camera, waterproofing, inductive charging, fast charging, 3D Touch, and display and speaker improvements. Ram increase and true tone would have been good too. I would upgrade from my current SE with the addition of one or two of those.

Hopefully the rumors are incomplete.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Apple has continued to "advance" iPhone design while continuing a line of phones that customers appreciate and are perhaps cheaper for Apple to manufacture.
As for the name, it is fine. You may link it to old computer names because you have that background information but many don't. Instead, others may read it as I do, iPhone SE(small edition).
I suggest you enjoy the tech and worry less about the names.

Edit: I just hope that they at least reduce the bezels a little bit. I'm not expecting a bezel-less phone like the iPhone X, but a little bit smaller black bars would be welcomed. :)

Curious - does your wife (or you) use a case? The smaller bezels get, the more difficult it seems to adequately use iOS's swipe features from off-screen when using a case to address the iPhones #1 design flaw from day 1 (its fragility and poor durability since Jony Ive must assume all iPhone users access their phones only in rubber-floored laboratories).

I guess the additional question is: do those who wish for smaller (if not zero) bezels also not believe in using cases?

I find the irony that the makers of the Walkman and iPod are only the ones willing to cater to the compact smartphone market that has become neesh. Small phones became unicorns in the industry.

The XZ1 Compact and current SE are the only compact phones worth paying attention to. I don't like the glossy plastic back of the X Compact.

I like that Sony and Apple still caters to a niche market. Smaller phone = smaller price = pure win for us. Some of us want phones to be iPod size. Not iPad mini.

I’m tired of £1000 phones. If this is the same specs as the 8 with BT 5, Galileo GNSS, optical image stabilisation and the latest LTE/4G standards then I might just get it if the price is reasonable.
Hopefully they’ve waterproofed it too.
it cant have specs like ip8 i think , it would kill it

I'd sell my iPhone X and replace it with an iPhonse SE-X anyday....and not just for the sexy name!

The future isn't bigger devices, it's smaller devices that can push their visual user experience to larger screens when you need 'em. And that is why I leave my iPhone 8 Plus work phone in my desk, and only carry my Apple Watch 3 w/cell. Just 2 cents from a fella with pretty large hands...

In absolute terms that makes the jump from A9 to A10 about the same as A8 to A9, so I’d say that’s still significant even if baymowe was wrong in his initial assertion. Certainly not like the tiny hop between the A7 and A8.
The A9/2GB platform is quite nice, and the 6S, SE and $329 2017 iPad perform quite well on iOS11. But for 2018 buyers who want to be able to hold onto their device for a few years, it’s getting somewhat long in the tooth.

I think Apple’s done a great job with their roadmap. If they hadn’t used the latest generation A9 when the SE was released and instead had gone with iPhone 6 internals... what a huge difference it would have made. Can you imagine buying an A8/1GB phone even this year, let alone next year until the refresh is available.

But Apple certainly could go with a generation behind now for the SE; an A10 offers plenty of performance, and could sell for another couple years. Similarly the $329 iPad is likely to get an A10 refresh next year.

If a new mini does happen, I could see it with an A11 just so Apple wouldn’t have to refresh it as quickly. It sells for $70 more than the larger 2017 iPad, so presumably there’s room in BOM cost. With an A11 it could sell for another 3 years untouched.

A10 would be silly.
When it came out it got the 6month old A9 from the 6S.

It's been two years of aging, but only get one years worth of cpu update to the A10. Sales will be even more mediocre. Way too little upgrade.

I agree! That’s what was so compelling of the SE. they didn’t treat it like a budget option. Gave it the best processor and newest camera. It felt like a just released new phone, not a budget phone, all in a portable 4 inch size. I think they’ll do the same this year too. I’ll be buying one. I miss the convenience of a smaller phone

I love my SE - great phone at a good price. I would happily consider an upgrade next year.

4 weeks ago I swapped my SE for and iPhone 8; It was a cheap deal and I thought I could get used to it. My SE's bluetooth and responsiveness of screen were playing up.

It has't really worked out; anything on the top of the screen is a pain to click and it's awkward and heavy in my pocket still. I also don't like the way it drags me into using it more rather than with the SE I'd just leave things to do later on a MacBook because the screen was too small to look at or do things on websites.

I'll swap back to an SE2, if it comes.

Is it just me or is anyone else truly fascinated with how Apple's made it so difficult to track/understand the iPhone model line-up without an app or Wikipedia? SE...SE 2...7...8...no 9 but instead a jump to X instead of 10...

For a company that ruined its iOS (in my opinion) with iOS7 by using with the excuse that certain things "distracting" the user needed to be swept away to make room for an uncluttered, non-distracting, tidied-up presentation, how funny is it that it's damn near impossible to understand the iPhone model hierarchy without a decoder guide/app/wikipedia reference point? Who will later remember that the SE was between the 6 & 7 (I think??) while the SE 2 was between the X and the...11...or....X+1....or X 2?

I wonder if it'll look the same or if they'll switch to looking like a 6/6S/7/8.

It'll be a way of telling people who have a phone that looks like that that they're way behind the times and they need to upgrade to an X or they're lame.

I rock my SE proudly and wouldn’t want the newest device if it were free.

I get two days of battery life before I have to charge, an ergonomic design where I can browse and reply to texts with one hand, I have a headphone jack and don’t have to worry about dongles, plus, plus, plus...

This is the greatest news ever for me. Best phone ever for $129

Excellent news this!

Can't wait. My SE has been the best iPhone I have owned.

Same. I’ve had the 6, 6S, AND 6S plus, and every model before. SE is my favorite.

Still, I see no reason the SE shouldn't get the latest internals. They did it last year.

And if I remember correctly, people were predicting that the SE would originally get the A8 chip. So maybe they're wrong this time too.

People wanting this to be redesigned are missing the point. This phone exists specifically to fulfil a price point. They won't want the development and retooling costs involved with designing and manufacturing a new phone.
