I compare the SE line to video systems that get smaller and cheaper, but also better.

PlayStations phats - > PlayStation slims

If you ever go on GameFAQS, most posters there always prefer the smaller device that arrives later. It's more refined. Less issues. Remember the DS to DS lite? How about how much nicer the Xbox One S is in white than the og Xbone?

My Vita slim might have the poorer LCD screen but doesn't have black blotches as the phat, longer battery life, less bulkier, and uses the standard micro-usb to charge. Original PS1 and PS2 had DREs (disc-read errors) and overheated. The DS lite had way better battery life and brighter screen than the og DS. The original Game Boy Advance didn't even have a backlight like the GBA SP.

The iPhone SEries are the same way. Smaller, better, and cheaper. The 4/6/X are just templates for a new design that gets better over time. Enjoy the X but expect it to be more refined over time with faster and cheaper successors. Apple is predictable. They will rehash designs over and over for about half a decade.

X owners are going to feel hosed if future successors brings back Touch ID onto the display or rear and has way better color options than the two it has now. A 2020 SE for $400-$500 with faster chip and camera than the current X. Now that's value.

Yes it's worth $400 but then add:
A10 Fusion
2nd gen Touch ID
Water/dust resistance
Dual front speakers
3D Touch
Wireless & fast charging
Taptic Engine (faux home button)
Front and rear cameras of the 7

And it becomes a $700 phone, therefore buy an iPhone 7.
I get what you’re saying, but the iPhone 7 is actually only $549, and will probably drop to $449 next September. Would expect 6S to be dropped from the lineup then as well.

The SE getting an A10 makes sense, it already has A9 and you can’t expect to get the flagship A11 in a $349 phone. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an additional price cut to around $329.

Any other low cost upgrades like camera improvement or TouchID 2 are also possible but not 3D Touch, why go to all the expense for the limited utility? Expect the same body, and yes it will have the headphone jack.

Your basically looking at a processor refresh so 2018/2019 buyers can get a few years of life out of it.

With the smaller display the A10, perhaps a 10nm version, will be plenty powerful enough. Without Face ID there will be no need for the neural engine, so why use the A11? The design may shift to be more 8 like, and they may find a way to reduce the bezels. They may even move the TouchID to the back like the flagship Android phones. Likely, however, is that they will stick with the current SE design and drop the price of the current SE to $299. This leaves two four inch entry models that look pretty much the same priced at $299 and $399 respectively for 32GB. This is a great offering in developing countries and meets the needs for a better 4 inch phone in the more developed world.

Says who? For all intents and purposes, the best iPhone designs were 4 and 5. And they were good for THAT time they were released. If you also want to ride a 1940s beetle because of its iconic design, go right ahead.

5S was an iteration that stuck out because of the introduction of gold, and 6 resulted in epic sales, even if it was a bit meh from the get go.
He gave his opinion. No need to be snarky about it. If you dont like the design, dont buy the phone. I agree with him that this is one of the best designs for the iPhone ever. And I also think it is a timeless design.

I don’t care for the SE but the day high end iPhones (or any other high end Apple product) are made in India is the day I stop buying them without any hesitation.
Lol. Bother to explain why that is? Why is the iPhone going to be different than the one manufactured anywhere else if the same quality standards are being adhered to? Or do you just dislike India for your personal reasons?

Waterprof it and put in the rear camera of the IP8. Then it will be the perfect phone for running

It won't be waterproof, it likely Will be water resistant and have upgraded internals/hardware from the iPhone 7 are my thoughts. An update none the less is interesting to hear for the SE

I have an SE mainly at the time for price. (Plan was just to keep it for life of contract) I'm intrigued about the next SE but I find the screen too small for my needs now. My SE has been a good phone and great for those on a budget or really like the small form factor.

The SE came with the latest generation A9 CPU, and Apple have kept it going with a storage bump for another year. Because the Indian manufacturing facilities are going to be making the current SE I would suggest that it could continue going with a price cut for another year - I've seen so many offers for the 32Gb SE for £299 (retail £349) so there seems to be room to offer it at a lower price if Apple quietly dropped the 128Gb model.

This gives Apple room to launch and sell the SE2 concurrently with the SE while quietly discontinuing the 6s and 6s plus and perhaps even quietly getting rid of the 7 (not the 7 Plus).

That would simplify the lines and offer people who like the SE form factor something to upgrade to.

Rather than calling it the SE2, they could call it the Classic (as referenced earlier in the thread) and give it the A11 CPU which would enable Apple to run it for 3 years (storage bump followed by price cut in subsequent years).

Giving a Classic the full X treatment would surely need Apple to get rid of the non-plus models that weren't current.

the se had the top notch cpu by apple at the time (a9) upon release, i hope that is the case for the next one

the a10 is fast but not as impressive as the a11
It had the A9/2GB platform because Apple knew they weren’t going to upgrade the processor until 2018. The A8/1GB platform of the iPhone 6 would have given a poor user experience to later SE buyers. Can you imagine buying an iPhone 6 now? Not great performance on iOS11 now, and just getting worse with iOS 12,13,14.

The A10 is plenty fast for a 4.0” $349 phone, and the SE doesn’t need the neural processor. Could a refreshed SE get an A11? Sure it’s possible, it’s really dependent on Apple’s cost. And it would be a better choice wrt shelf life, since the next upgrade likely wouldn’t happen until 2020.

I’d expect it to have 3D Touch as well. At this point it’s the only iPhone without it.
There won’t be room for a Taptic Engine in there so that pretty much eliminates 3D Touch and a solid state home button as an option. I’m glad they’re updating it and keeping it around, but I would caution people about getting their hopes up beyond a chip bump and camera upgrade (and maybe Touch ID 2) as redesigning the chassis would mean a significant investment which would drive the price up and defeat one of the phones two key market niches (low cost).

That is the sexiest render for an iPhone SE X ever!!!

Looking forward to a SEcond Edition ;)

I like the small form factor and one hand usability, it's decent specs and price

I hope they keep a version of Touch ID, if possible add better camera, keep the same size, but make the bezzles a bit smaller.

Nope, the A9 was 70% faster than the A8 and the A10 was 40% faster than the A9. The A9 was a beast at the time.
You're correct...had my processors crossed.

Still, the A10 is perfectly adequate for the SE. They will not put the same processor as their flagship iPad in the SE, so no A10X.

I own the original SE, 64GB, version. So does my wife.

They do not serve as our only means of computing. For serious work we use our MBPs, and in-between iPad Mini 4s (which are now on the endangered species list).

So these SEs are perfect for our pocket-sized comm on-the-move case, with one-hand operation throughout. Some ad-hoc photos, and that is about it.

The potential SE Mark II, if it happens, will refresh the SE lifecycle, and avoid its early obsolescence. That was my main concern, as I am not interested on larger iPhone phone factors -- at all.

If the SE Mark II lacks fewer refinements, other than a better rear camera, then so be it. I couldn't care less.

That would be my dream phone. The current SE seriously needs a better display. If they make an SE2 with a display from 2012 that is terrible.

Also, I remember some rumors pointing towards apple using the 4.7" form factor for an SE2. I think that would be a mistake, at least in the US. I think a lot of people using the SE are using it for the compact size.
