this will be a great phone for my retiree parents and my tweens.

If this comes out in time I'm definitely buying it to replace mom's 6s.

Lol. I can tell you right now that the camera won’t be. That would gut the 11 sales.. For a $399 phone the A12/3GB is a good enough tune-up.

And the urgent need to replace 2GB devices across the entire iOS-lineup tells me those aren’t going to see many more iOS updates..

I doubt 2GB devices will lose support any time soon. The 8 has 2GB of memory and apple released a tablet with 2GB last year. I've used a 6s with iOS 13 and it runs fine. Maybe A8 devices are dropped but A9 should get at least a few more.

Japan Display has been the main supplier of LCD screens for all the LCD iPhones since the beginning. They're also in a lot of debt right now and have been bailed out partially by Apple infusing millions of dollars into the company.
I can't see LG providing the LCD displays for this new iPhone. Everything points to it having to come from Japan Display (not that we, the end user, care one bit).

LG and JDI share production of the iPhone XR and 11 LCD.

Apple never tries to single source a part. LGD supplying LCDs for SE2 is perfectly in line with expectations.

Not directing this at you in particular, but there is always a not-so-subtle dig from people here about the SE as if it’s an old person‘s or kid’s phone. Some people just like a smaller sized phone at a reasonable price, so it’s also a great phone for anyone who likes those things regardless of age. Your phone is not better because it has a different design, a different size, or costs more. It’s just different. Different things are better for different people.

At least they're learning that the SE was popular due to its size and not its price. I'd be less insulted if they called it an 8s or 9 (assuming it's actually better than the 8).

Yes, the size is a huge factor but so is the headphone jack - myriad reasons I want my comms hardwired and I don't want to be using bluetooth. A small phone is easier to conceal and is more discreet in general. My phone has to compete for pocket space w/my tire gauge and ez pass when I travel on two wheels.

Lol you are most likely wrong. 6S vs SE - same chip and same camera. If Apple follows the theme then it will be:

11PRO - 3 cameras
11 - 2 cameras
SE2 - 1 camera

It will have the same chip as 11PRO/11. I won't gut the 11 sales. It will simply be the same as 6S vs SE if Apple follows the same theme.

So, nice try

Budget phones are what killed 3D Touch in the first place, so no surprise they’re not going to add it to this one...
Actually the fact that after 5 years it was still completely pointless and not a single practical application for the pressure sensitivity arose...is what killed 3D touch.

When it became evident that 99% of what was done with it could be accomplished with long press, it was axed.

I think it’s a missed opportunity using the iPhone 8 design instead of a revised iPhone 5 with bigger screen.
There is a genuine love for the iPhone 5 design and it would be seen more of “new product” than the iPhone 8. But Apple is probably using it to push margins and reuse left-over parts - not saying it’s a bad thing.

It's not a dig, but anyone who is remotely tech literate can see the SE is several generations old.

A larger display is unequivocally better for consuming social media, video, and viewing photos.

It's like driving a sub-compact car. Sure, you might enjoy the small seats, analog controls, and lack of active safety features. But chances are, you're probably limited by income.

I really don't understand why the SE fans on here are expecting for so much towards a $399 phone. You get what you pay for, don't expect anything close to the 11 and 11 Pro line up.

I know many SE owners, including my wife. All of them are vivid SE fans and and NONE OF THEM bought it because of the low price. It was all about the form factor. If they wanted a cheap iPhone 8 they could just buy a pre-owned iPhone 7. My wife is on her second SE and she refuses to buy a larger phone regardless of the price. She wouldn't use an iPhone 11 even if she got it for free.

Apple should approach this the same way they created the 12" MacBook. Ask their hardware folks to come up with the best possible device with the best possible camera that can fit into the footprint of the original SE (ok can be slightly thicker perhaps). They could probably price it like any other top-of-the-line flagship product.

At the price point being rumored, it will probably have a single camera lens and probably less RAM than the 11. It’s a shame Apple doesn’t have a more premium option that’s available in a small size.

Release the iPhone 11 pro mini for $500 and I would buy it immediately.

Just look at a teardown of the new iphones and you should immediately realize why that's impossible. Components (apart from battery and screen) don't magically shrink. And screen usage of battery is also becoming less and less so "Just put a smaller battery in, because smaller screen" also isn't necessarily true anymore.

Why do you think this SE2 is gonna be based on the 8 enclosure and not on the 5 enclosure, it's because they physically can't fit the new components in a chassis that small.

Sorry, but no.

There isn't one single reason why the SE was popular. SE owners were attracted to it for one or more reasons... and not always the same reasons as everyone else.

  • Size
  • Price
  • Build/Design (familiar, battle tested)
  • Headphone jack
  • Compatible with accessories
But we'll see soon enough when/if the SE 2 is released. I believe that an iPhone 8-based SE 2 at $400 is not going to sell as well as the original SE.

Exactly this.

Times one million.
6s+ is perfect as the day it was born.

only by ditching support can they force me to give them more money for another iPhone

it worked when they ditched support for my 2011 MBA.

They’re completely evil now.

If anything has come out of the smartphone market. Big demand across a wide price point. People who cannot or will not purchase an $800 phone will buy a $400 phone because of the benefits these devices provide. Apple a bit slow in recognizing this trend. Better late then never.👏

Although Apple have a history of doing this. The iPad is an example. Realise the iPad Pro and leave the cheaper iPad for a year or so. Everyone then thinks there’s no cheaper iPad anymore and many upgrade to a more expensive Pro even if they don’t need it. When the iPad Pro’s first came out I can remember people saying that there would not be any cheaper iPad, all the iPads were now Pro. Buy a Pro if you want an iPad. And then what do you know... the entry level iPad appears. I think it was deliberate. Just as releasing this cheaper iPhone a tad later is deliberate.

OK, but which Back Camera "image sensor" ?
Obviously not confirmed, but it will likely be a single lens setup and that camera will probably be the same as the regular (i.e. wide angle) camera from the 11. It will probably have an iPhone XR style (people only) portrait mode and most of the other camera features (including night mode) minus anything that requires the ultra wide lens. My guess is that they'll stick with the 7 MP Facetime camera though, so features for the front facing camera will be essentially the same as what is available on the 8 now.

The flat sides of the iPhone 5/5S/SE are much better than the rounded sides on more recent models. Flat sides just feel better in the hand than rounded. You feel like you have a better grip on the thing, even with a case on it.
