I'm on year 3 of my iPhone 8. I nearly pulled the trigger on the 11, but held off due to the 6.1" size just being too large for one handed use. I'd have gone with the 5.8" 11 Pro, but I can't justify $1200 on a phone.

So I'd honestly be open to an 8S or SE 2 (or whatever they call it) if they can significantly improve the camera compared to the original 8. If it's just a RAM upgrade and the A13 bionic chip, I'll pass. My iPhone 8 is hanging in there in every way except for battery life and camera quality at this point.

Held on to my 128G 7+ for similar reasons. Since it has dual cameras with 2X optical zoom, IMO, only the 11 Pros would make sense and could not justify the price tag.

Why do analysts insist on calling this an SE2 when it's really an iPhone 9se?
It’s rumored to have an A13, so if you want to put a number on it it’s the 11SE. 9SE makes it sound two years old at launch, and 3 years old when the 12 comes out six months later.

But like the SE, I don’t think they’re going to give it a model name that “ages”. I suppose SE2 is a possibility, but I think they’ll use something new. SR is my guess.

I'd buy a SE2 immediately when it will have the same form factor as the current SE. After the 5, the 5S I'm now using my 3rd SE. My kids all have an SE as does my wife. Several co-workers eventually traded their larger phablet-iphones for SE's as well. Everyone does have macbooks and ipads so a smaller iPhone just makes sense.
I might buy the 8-sized SE2, but only when my SE breaks down. But then I won't bother to buy another iPad as the usecase for that iPad will already be fulfilled by the SE2.

But maybe Apple just cannot build a powerful SE-sized replacement which last way over 24 hours as there might be insufficient room for batteries in such a small phone?

It's not a dig, but anyone who is remotely tech literate can see the SE is several generations old.

A larger display is unequivocally better for consuming social media, video, and viewing photos.

It's like driving a sub-compact car. Sure, you might enjoy the small seats, analog controls, and lack of active safety features. But chances are, you're probably limited by income.

Still seems like a dig to me. Especially the last sentence in this reply.

Sorry, but no.

There isn't one single reason why the SE was popular. SE owners were attracted to it for one or more reasons... and not always the same reasons as everyone else.

  • Size
  • Price
  • Build/Design (familiar, battle tested)
  • Headphone jack
  • Compatible with accessories
But we'll see soon enough when/if the SE 2 is released. I believe that an iPhone 8-based SE 2 at $400 is not going to sell as well as the original SE.
You don’t know how well the original SE sold and if it were that popular, it wouldn’t have gone 3 years without an update.

At least they're learning that the SE was popular due to its size and not its price. I'd be less insulted if they called it an 8s or 9 (assuming it's actually better than the 8).
It has some things in common with the SE release; they’re rumored to be releasing a rehashed, older-design phone with a current processor, mid-cycle, at $399

All that shows they “learned” is that there’s a viable market at $399 for a de-featured iphone with a current processor.

If Apple could offer the SE2 with the 5.5” screen and still price it at $399, they would. It would sell better than this 4.7” will, because most people want phones with larger screens. Given the choice of a $400 4.7 and a $400 5.5, most would want the larger phone.

it’s not a dig but I already have an iPad and MacBook for that. I’d like a small phone just for making calls, sending messages and sharing the odd photo ... without a bulge in my pocket. And i would pay £1000 if that’s what it cost to stay on Apple services and products.

A better name than SE 2, 8S, or 9, in my opinion, would be iPhone Classic (saw it, didn’t originate it), or iPhone 11 Classic since it has the A13. The smaller phone will come in Sept 2020 in the form of the 5.4 inch iPhone Pro, which will be smaller in physical size than an iPhone 8.

I think they’ll go with just iPhone - much like they did with the new entry-level iPad. And I bet they’ll discontinue the 8 Plus (and 8). So for a larger display and/or telephoto, the newer iPhones will be the only options.

Oh it’s a dig all right. He’s taunting you: “Sure, you might enjoy the... lack of active safety features”?

Surely not.

I don’t know what’s so hard to understand. Some people buy the SE because of price, some buy for size. I’m not sure why it’s important for some to think those who like the SE for it’s smaller size can’t afford anything larger/newer.

But the number of users who only buy for size don’t account for a sufficiently large market to make an SE-sized, smaller display iPhone a viable product. So you won’t see a $600 SE-sized iPhone 11-type (LCD mid-market) or a $900 11 SE Pro (OLED flagship).

Wish I would have had more concrete info on this phone before the Sept iPhones. I just replaced our four-year-old 6s's with 8s. Would have held out for SE2 had I known.

i also have a 6s and really need a new phone.
iOS 13 really has killed the (never ever really good anyway) battery on this 4 year old phone.

this new model based on the 6/6s/7/8 size is rumored to launch in March 2020.
but i have decided not to buy this new model unless it has a U-1 chip inside it as that is the piece of new tech (not 5G modem) that will make this phone still usable in 4 years.

Man! I for one am disappointed. I was really hoping for a premium SE2 in more or less the same form factor as the OG SE. OLED screen, small bezels, dual camera, face id, etc. Perhaps it was not possible to fit all that in so small a form factor but even some of those or heck even simply an upgraded processor would have gotten me but all of that would have been the dream. That phone was peak design for my use case.

What a lot of people dogging on the SE and the people who CHOOSE to get an SE not because of price but because of form factor is that WE DO NOT CARE ABOUT MEDIA CONSUMPTION ON THE PHONE. Sure, we watch videos on our phone from time to time, but only when a computer or tablet or TV is not convenient. Instead, we use our phone for calling, texting, video calling, convenient mobile apps (such as banking, venmo, etc.), instagram, and things like that. All of which is done easily on a smaller device with a smaller screen. This lets us carry it around in our pocket without being giant in the pocket.

I'm on android now just because of the phone options over there, and a true SE replacement would have gotten me back in an instant. Oh well.

this.
September 2020 will be real interesting if this smaller sized (outer physical dimensions) but larger effective display device is really launched.
to be really successful they need to have realized a secure under/in display tech for Touch ID, and, finalize where/how they put the sensors for Face ID.
in the meantime, the iPhone 8 variant rumoured to launch in March 2020 will still be enough for most 6/6s users to (finally) upgrade. indeed, lovers of the SE will be hard pressed to not upgrade as well.

Some enthusiasts might enjoy driving a car without traction control or a heads up display because it feels more pure.

The SE2 makes it clear that the silent majority of SE customers are buying for price. I don't think it's a "dig" when people suggest the SE is phone for seniors or kids. Habits have changed. Smartphone screen time is increasing every year. People can use a single app for everything from paying utility bills, ordering ride sharing, to renting clothes and accessories. Some "enthusiasts" might want to do things the old way, but that's not representative of what's happening globally in 2019.

Obviously, the data Apple has must show this, but every time I go to forums from news articles about the SE2 it's filled with people like me clamoring for an updated and upgraded SE2 in the same form factor as the SE. I would kill for a premium SE2 in the OG SE form factor. Makes me wonder how many people there are looking for this because it is at least a very vocal minority.

Yes, the size is a huge factor but so is the headphone jack - myriad reasons I want my comms hardwired and I don't want to be using bluetooth. A small phone is easier to conceal and is more discreet in general. My phone has to compete for pocket space w/my tire gauge and ez pass when I travel on two wheels.
I hope you guys are right about the small size. If not on this phone, than on a future one.
I’d kill for an iPhone Mini with the camera quality of the 11 Pro Max. That’ll never happen, but just a Mini might. I’m ready to be rid of this giant toaster in my pocket, as much as I love the screen size.

I hear you, but realize the echo chamber nature of online forums. There might be a few dozen or hundred commenting, representing a larger population of, who knows, 5, 10, 15 million potential buyers of an SE-sized SE2.

But the expectation for the 4.7” SE2 is 30-40 million units in 2020, and that it’s an upgrade path for the upwards of 100 million iPhone 6 users (and presumably 6s if it doesn’t get iOS 14).

It’s just a numbers thing. Unfortunately for those who want a physically smaller iPhone, most customers want larger phones.

Still bummed this 8SE thing is turning out to be real.

I want an SE-sized phone with no bezels, Touch-ID under the screen, improved camera/internals, design similar to 5...in other words the iPhone SEX.

Release the iPhone 11 pro mini for $500 and I would buy it immediately.
People say low demand is the only reason companies stopped making small phones. But I think it also has to do with the fact that companies can spend a few cents(?) making a phone slightly bigger and charge $100 more for it. That kind of almost pure profit is irresistible for companies, enough to make them stop selling small phones in order to get that profit.

All I want is an SE sized phone with a better camera. It sounds like Apple don't want to make one. Do any Android manufacturers make one already?

I would prefer to stay with Apple but I don't like the larger sizes. It may be time for me to at least consider another manufacturer if they make a good alternative.
I haven’t found any legitimate small smartphone options, even in android. They’re either too functionally limited (eg. Lightphone) or they only work as secondary phones, or both.

Anyone else think this is a killer deal? The A13 chip is a screamer, so $400 to me here looks like an insane deal. It sounds like the biggest gap compared to the higher end phones is a camera, but I don't think that's worth $700 to me. (The 6.x" iphone 11 is just too large for my hands)

Compared to the iPhone 8:

Single core: 920 -> 1327 (+44%)
Multi core: 2223 -> 3290 (+48%)

I don't care about OLED screens... comparing them in person at the apple store I could barely notice a difference after looking quite closely at a lot of photos.

It would be nice if it got at least dual cameras and better composite imagery. I think think the battery life on the X / 11 models is a lot better too though.

A top end 5.4" would fit the bill for folks who want capability but small form factor. But not the market that wants a low budget phone that happens to be smaller due to cost. I think there's a market for both but not with a single device though.

I very much agree with there being a market for both. I really think in the next 1-2 years we will see the return of the premium phone size device, sub 5.5” (acceptable).

Budget phones didn't kill 3D Touch. Lack of vision killed 3D Touch. Apple literally said (metaphorically speaking), "Hey guys, here's this kinda sorta cool new thing we implemented. You can use it in your apps, not use it in your apps, or ya know... whatever. We're gonna use it sometimes too. Other times we won't. We'll leave 'em guessin'."
Bang on! The worst part about 3D Touch (or Force Touch as it was called originally...LOL) is that was literally impossible to tell if it were there or not. It's the worst UX ever.

There is market for an SE iPhone, no doubt about it

I don’t know why people laughed at you for this. It’s absolutely true...

I live in San Diego now (despite the username) and out and about in the city I can spot at least 2 a day if I tried. Doesn’t seem like much but I don’t easily spot 2 or more XR’s or iPhone 11’s, so...
