No, 3D Touch failed because Apple didn’t properly market this feature and it was confusing for those to know how to manipulate it. That’s why it failed. And I’m not knocking 3D Touch, as it is a great feature, for those who actually know how to invoke its actions, but for everyone else, they didn’t know it even existed on the phone. That’s on Apple.

This is speculative. What we do know is that the 3d touch layer adds cost to each unit to the tune of $20 per OLED and $8 per LCD. With the 11 not only did Apple save money by eliminating the layer, they also had some savings by shrinking the taptic engine. This is likely why 3d touch died.

Really looking forward to the new SE.

If the price is right and the features are good enough, this will sell like crazy.

Some people just need a "good enough" phone, and the refreshed iPhone 8 may just be that.

There is a genuine love for the iPhone 5 design

It would also be odd in that the newest iPads took on the iPhone 4/5/5s/SE flat sided aesthetic also.

I sure hope the iPhones (all of them) go that way.
It's far more grippable than the "bar of soap" rounded versions.

She wouldn't use an iPhone 11 even if she got it for free.

Your wife and I are the same in that regard.
You could give me an iPhone 11/11 Pro and I would simply re-sell it straight away.

No interest in bigger iPhones, period.

Super excited for this phone. I don't mind the bigger phones, I've owned some microsoft lumias in the past and those were yuge, but there is something pleasant about a compact and usable digital device.

3D Touch was a failed iPhone feature, Apple knows it, anyone else inside this forum knows it as well. Is there a cost savings benefit associated by eliminating 3D Touch? Absolutely. But it’s a two-fold process, it wasn’t just eliminated for cost savings, why would Apple keep something around when no one knew how to use it in the first place? (Rhetorical) So I’d say my speculation is fairly accurate, just as your cost saving analogy is.

All I can say is that I hope this becomes reality, I would like to upgrade my iPhone 6s

better off getting the rumored 5.4" Pro phone if you want a small phone or looking to upgrade from the SE.
[automerge]1571770083[/automerge]
They are rumouring a 5.4” one for this autumn, but I doubt it will sell for $500, more probable around between 700-900.

This, but it is rumored to be a top of the line phone (eg iPhone 5.4" Pro, 5.7" Pro, 6.4" Max)

If i werent midpoint in a contract i would have got the original SE purely because I love the form factor. The reason I wont be getting the SE2 is because it looks like every phone from the 6-8.

A top end 5.4" would fit the bill for folks who want capability but small form factor. But not the market that wants a low budget phone that happens to be smaller due to cost. I think there's a market for both but not with a single device though.

The 4” display on the iPhone SE was great for one handed use. This upgrade to the iPhone 8 makes it seem like an iPhone 8s, but I doubt Apple will call it that. My guess is that it will priced exactly at what the iPhone 8 is priced at: $449.

Budget phones didn't kill 3D Touch. Lack of vision killed 3D Touch. Apple literally said (metaphorically speaking), "Hey guys, here's this kinda sorta cool new thing we implemented. You can use it in your apps, not use it in your apps, or ya know... whatever. We're gonna use it sometimes too. Other times we won't. We'll leave 'em guessin'."
Actually the fact that after 5 years it was still completely pointless and not a single practical application for the pressure sensitivity arose...is what killed 3D touch.

When it became evident that 99% of what was done with it could be accomplished with long press, it was axed.

you make valid points, and I agree that Apple is at fault for not highlighting and supporting it enough, but it was a great feature if you knew where and how to use it. Apple didn’t help the feature any by releasing budget phones without it. More of those phones are now out in the Wild and fragmented the feature. The nail in the coffin was when they released the XR last year without it. More people got that phone because it cost significantly less, further fragmenting the feature. I shouldn’t have said it’s the killer, but I believe it’s a significant portion of the reason.

Probably not interested. As many, I expected and wanted the same size as the iPhone SE 1st gen. Apple is weird. They were the last ones to switch to big screen size. And now, they can no longer make a smaller phone? C'mon...

Bingo!
Meanwhile the iPads have sizes all over the spectrum..

A larger display is unequivocally better for consuming social media, video, and viewing photos.

I can do all those things perfectly fine for me on a SE sized screen. I’m not blind. Your experience with the world is not the default one for all humans. You might as well be asking 'why do people like blue when red is the perfect color'.

Why do I want a smaller phone? Because I don't wanna carry around a dinner plate in my pocket. I wear jeans, I don't want to also have a fanny pack just to hold a phone while I'm on my motorcycle. I don't like having some giant 'tech bling' smacking against me and dragging down my shorts while I'm riding my bicycle. When I go to a bistro for lunch I don't want my phone to take up half the table if I sit it down. I do things where a large phone is annoying. I don't need or want a large phone since 'the phone' is not a lifestyle for me. I just want the tech to 'do it's thing' and then disappear into the background of my life.

But what is the PPI?!?

That’s such an important question?

Will Apple continue to cheap out and leave us with iPhone 4 pixels!!!

Or will it be the crystalline perfect still unmatched sharpness of the plus display?

Which is why I have an iPad and a Mac.

I do nothing with video or social on my SE and I only really "take" the photos with it and then enjoy, view, edit them elsewhere.

For my usages - the smallest possible iPhone size is the best one. I want it to disappear in my pocket/jacket and be as unobtrusive as it can be - while still being there when I need a quick pic, to send a text, hail a ride, check a score, etc.

My life doesn't revolve around my iPhone. It's a tool that I need to be as discrete as possible in order to be as useful as possible.

My mom is looking forward to this to upgrade her iPhone 6 as she doesn't want to change to a FaceID based phone and the price is right. Here's hoping the rumors are true!

I'm on year 3 of my iPhone 8. I nearly pulled the trigger on the 11, but held off due to the 6.1" size just being too large for one handed use. I'd have gone with the 5.8" 11 Pro, but I can't justify $1200 on a phone.

So I'd honestly be open to an 8S or SE 2 (or whatever they call it) if they can significantly improve the camera compared to the original 8. If it's just a RAM upgrade and the A13 bionic chip, I'll pass. My iPhone 8 is hanging in there in every way except for battery life and camera quality at this point.

I'm on a 6s+ and was going to wait for the base iPhone 12... but I could see myself picking this up for $450 (if it has the 128). I'm tempted because when I bought this current phone I saw myself using it for things I no longer use it for. Now I use it for email, twitter, texts, podcasts and music, and photos. the smaller size if it had a better battery life would do exactly that for me. (hopefully an iPhone charging case would work with this too).
